Media misreports Fort Hood shooting with PTSD claims

Media misreports Fort Hood shooting with PTSD claims
Lt. Gen. Mark Milley, commanding general of III Corps and Fort Hood, speaks with the media outside of an entrance to the Fort Hood military base following a shooting that occurred inside, Wednesday, April 2, 2014, in Fort Hood, Texas. Four people were killed, including the gunman, and 16 were wounded in the attack, authorities said. (AP Photo/Tamir Kalifa)
The Fort Hood shooting, the third mass shooting on a military base in the last five years, is a tragedy. There’s no doubt about that. But it’s also the latest opportunity for the public to reinforce stereotypes about Post-Traumatic Stress (drop the "Disorder"). All nuance is lost in favor of sensationalized accounts of this "traumatized warrior."
As soon as I heard about the event, I thought two things in rapid succession:
1) Oh shit.
2) Please God, don't let the shooter be a soldier or a veteran.
But, of course, Ivan Lopez has been in both the Army and National Guard.
I had hoped that these things would be kept in perspective. His military affiliation is probably best understood as determining the location of the incident, not being responsible for it.
Then I read the CNN report.
Sure enough, the second paragraph explains how the "Iraq War veteran was being evaluated for post-traumatic stress disorder before he opened fire at the Fort Hood Army post", making it sound like one caused the other. No civilian would read that and think his "disorder" was caused by anything but the tour in Iraq, which is blatantly untrue.
It doesn't get better from there. The first main section headline in the report is titled "Combat History". The truth is that Lopez was in Iraq for four months on logistical work (i.e. driving trucks) and was exposed to no combat trauma, according to the DoD. The headline should have been "No Combat History".
The reality? This guy had his grandfather and mother - with whom he was very close - die in the last six months. He was pissed off that they military didn't let him travel home sooner. His "self-reported" traumatic brain injury - that no one else can confirm - is not the issue. Any symptoms of depression he had were not based on his deployments.
This is the kind of routine the media pulls all the time, and it undermines the military and veteran communities. Clichés abound; everyone seems to revert to stereotypes the second there is an opportunity to sell papers or advertising.
This is a difficult narrative to neutralize. You never know when one of us is going to go ballistic and shoot something up, right? We're all walking powder kegs . . .
Lopez was obviously dealing with something, and somehow that escalated into the tragedy at Fort Hood. Unfortunately, the details are now irrelevant - the media is busy convincing everyone that they witnessed another broken soldier lash out because of the trauma he endured in one of those senseless wars that we fought over the last decade.
Or maybe it's been a bit longer - whatever. The public doesn't really care.

Dallaire says Conservatives are 'second-guessing' the cost of veterans
By The Canadian Press April 3, 2014 5:10 PM
OTTAWA - Sen. Romeo Dallaire, a former Canadian Forces lieutenant-general, says some Conservative MPs have been grousing about what it costs to take care of Canada's veterans.
Dallaire, best known as the former commander of the ill-fated peacekeeping mission in Rwanda, says he's been hearing complaints about the roughly $3.8 billion the government spends each year on Veterans Affairs.
He made the comments in an interview with The Canadian Press before testifying today at the House of Commons veterans committee.
Dallaire, who did not name names, says the attitude about the price tag is one that he says "has been sniffing its way around the Conservative hallways."
The rumblings stand in stark contrast to the Harper government's political message, which has been to insist that the Conservatives bend over backwards for veterans and will continue to do so.
As well, in a class-action lawsuit brought by Afghanistan veterans in B.C., the government is arguing there is no "social contract" between the country and its soldiers, and that it is not bound by the promises of past governments.

Number of refugees in Lebanon hits 1m mark
April 04, 2014
BEIRUT: More than a million people fleeing Syria’s war have registered as refugees in Lebanon, the UN said on Thursday, with many living in misery in a tiny country overstretched by the crisis. And the number is swelling by the day, with the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) saying it registers 2,500 new refugees in Lebanon every day-more than one a minute.
At a crowded centre in Tripoli, Lebanon’s second city, hundreds of refugees were seen on Thursday queueing to register.
Yehia, an 18-year-old from Homs, was identified by UN as the millionth refugee to be registered.
He told reporters he lives in a garage in Dinniyeh, near Tripoli, with his mother and two sisters.
His father, a carpenter, was killed by a sniper in 2011, six months after the revolt against President Bashar Al Assad broke out.
“It is a disaster,” said Yehia.
“My mother sold all her gold so we could pay the $250 (191 euros) monthly rent. We don’t know what will happen to us in the future.”
His main wish is to go back to school to finish his studies, which were interrupted by the war.
“The fact that there were one million Syrians before me who are going hungry, even dying here is very painful,” Yehia said sorrowfully.
The UNHCR says that Syrian refugees, half of them children, now equal a quarter of Lebanon’s resident population, warning that most of them live in poverty and depend on aid for survival.
UNHCR representative Ninette Kelly branded the one million figure as “a devastating marker.”
“Each one of these numbers represents a human life who, like us, have lives of their own, but who’ve lost their homes, they’ve lost their family members, have lost their future,” she told reporters.
Kelly said Lebanon has become the country with the highest per capita concentration of refugees in the world.
Lebanon “is literally staggering under the weight of this problem. Its social services are stressed, health, education, its very fragile infrastructure is also buckling under the pressure.”
The massive crisis is compounded by a spillover of the violence that has ravaged Syria for the past three years, with Lebanon experiencing frequent bombings and clashes even as it grapples with political deadlock and an economic downturn. In a statement, UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres urged increased international action to help Lebanon deal with this “immense” and “staggering” crisis.
Social Affairs Minister Rachid Derbas also appealed for support, saying Lebanon “cannot carry this burden alone.”
The strain has been particularly felt in the public sector, with health and education services, as well as electricity, water and sanitation affected. The humanitarian appeal for Lebanon “is only 14 percent funded,” even as the needs of a rapidly growing refugee population become ever more pressing, Kelly said.
The vast majority of refugee children are not attending school.
“The number of school-aged children is now over 400,000, eclipsing the number of Lebanese children in public schools. These schools have opened their doors to over 100,000 refugees, yet the ability to accept more is severely limited,” the UNHCR said.
Because of the dire economic situation their families endure, many children are now working, “girls can be married young and the prospect of a better future recedes the longer they remain out of school,” it added.
Walid, a 22-year-old who shines shoes to scrape out a living in Tripoli, said: “Our situation is very sad, and we refugees really live from hand to mouth.”
Unlike Turkey and Jordan, which are also hosting hundreds of thousands of Syrians, Lebanon has not set up official camps. Alaa Ajam, owner of a foreign exchange shop in Tripoli, said “of course (the refugee crisis) is a burden... We are in solidarity with the Syrians, but like other countries we should have camps.”
Tens of thousands of families live in insalubrious informal settlements dotted around the country, many of them near the restive border with Syria. The conflict has killed more than 150,000 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, with half of the population estimated to have fled their homes.

Suspected Fort Hood shooter identified as Ivan Lopez, 34: base commander
April 03, 2014 11:36 PM
Reuters
FORT HOOD, Texas: The commander of the Fort Hood Army base in Texas on Thursday identified the soldier suspected of shooting dead three people and wounding 16 on Wednesday as Ivan Lopez, 34, and said he was originally from Puerto Rico.
Lieutenant General Mark Milley told reporters that Lopez's medical history indicated he was in an unstable psychological condition and there was a strong indication he had been in an altercation with another soldier prior to the shooting.
But he said there was no indication the shooter, who committed suicide by shooting himself in the head, had been targeting specific people.

Fort Hood shootings: Iraq veteran kills three people
at Texas military base
US
military base says 16 injured as gunman, who was receiving psychiatric help,
went on shooting spree before killing himself
An
Iraq war veteran being treated for mental illness opened fire on fellow service
members at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, killing three people and
wounding 16 before killing himself, at the same post where more than a dozen
people died in a 2009 attack.
The
shooter, who was named as Ivan Lopez, apparently walked into a building on
Wednesday and began firing a .45-calibre semi-automatic pistol that had been
purchased recently. He then got into a vehicle and continued firing before
entering another building and kept shooting.
He
was eventually confronted by military police in a parking lot. As he came
within 20ft (6 metres) of an officer, the gunman put his hands up but then
reached under his jacket and pulled out his weapon. The officer drew her own
gun, and the suspect put his pistol to his head and pulled the trigger.
The
gunman, who was married and served in Iraq for four months in 2011, had sought
help for depression, anxiety and other problems. Before the attack he had been
undergoing an assessment to determine whether he had post-traumatic stress
disorder, according to Lieutenant General Mark Milley, the senior officer on
the base.
Milley
said the incident began about 4pm local time (10pm BST) at an administration
building for a medical brigade. "At this time there is no indication that
this incident is related to terrorism although we are not ruling anything out
and the investigation continues," he said.

The
lockdown was lifted at the base about five hours later. Milley said he did not
want to confirm the suspect's name at the briefing because his next of kin had
not been identified. However, he said the shooter was married and was
undergoing treatment for "depression, anxiety and a variety of other
psychiatric and psychological issues".
He
said the suspect had arrived in Fort Hood in February, having moved from
another installation in Texas.
As the
shootings unfolded, the base's Twitter feed had urged personnel to
"shelter in place". The First Calvary Division, which is based at
Fort Hood, sent a Twitter alert telling people on base to close doors and stay
away from windows.
About
an hour later, the base issued a statement confirming the incident: "There
has been a shooting at Fort Hood, and injuries are reported. Emergency crews
are on the scene. No further details are known at this time."
A
lieutenant from Bell County sheriff's office, Donnie Adams, said they had
dispatched deputies and troopers from the Texas department of public safety to
the base after receiving reports of an "active shooter". FBI
spokeswoman Michelle Lee said its agents were also dispatched to the scene.
Barack
Obama, in Chicago on a fundraising tour, expressed sorrow that tragedy had once
again struck the base. "We're heartbroken that something like this might
have happened again," he said.
Obama
promised to get to the bottom of the latest incident. "Obviously this
reopened the pain of what happened at Fort Hood five years ago. We know these
families, we know the service to their country and the sacrifices that they
make."

In
2009, Fort Hood was the scene of the worst mass shooting at a military base in
the US. The massacre on 5 November occurred at a processing centre where troops
preparing to deploy to Afghanistan were receiving medical checkups. It left 13
dead and more than 30 injured. The gunman, Nidal Hasan, a former army
psychiatrist, was convicted by a military court and sentenced to death in
August.
In
2011, Naser Jason Abdo was arrested for planning a bomb attack on a restaurant
frequented by Fort Hood personnel. An awol soldier at the time, he was
sentenced to life in prison the following year.
After
the 2009 shooting, the US military tightened security at bases
nationwide. But last September, a naval contractor, Aaron Alexis, opened fire
at the Washington navy yard, leaving at least 13 people dead, including the
gunman. After that shooting, the defence secretary, Chuck Hagel, ordered the
Pentagon to review security at all US defence installations worldwide and examine
the granting of security clearances that allow access to them.
"When
we have these kinds of tragedies on our bases something's not working. We'll
identify it, we'll get the facts and we'll fix it," Hagel told reporters
at a briefing in Honolulu on Wednesday, where he was meeting defence ministers
from Asian countries.
General
Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, said in a statement:
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Fort Hood community in the
aftermath of this tragedy. Many questions remain and our focus is on supporting
the victims and their families … This is a community that has faced and
overcome crises with resilience and strength."
Sprawling
over 214,000 acres, Fort Hood is one of the largest army bases in the world,
home to more than 45,000 soldiers and 8,900 civilian staff.

Soldier suicides on the rise
Military denies trend,
insists rate steady throughout Afghan war
By MURRAY BREWSTER The
Canadian Press
Wed. Oct 28 - 4:46 AM
OTTAWA - More Canadian
soldiers killed themselves in 2008 than the year before, but the military says
the overall suicide rate has remained steady throughout the war in Afghanistan,
despite the obvious stresses of the mission.
Fifteen active-duty members
of the military took their own lives last year - a rate of 23 per 100,000 -
versus 11 confirmed suicides in 2007, according to newly released Defence
Department statistics.
But the average rate of
suicide over three years, from 2005 to 2008, was 17.9 per 100,000. Those are
the years which involved the heaviest combat in Afghanistan and the highest
number of troop rotations.
Surprisingly, the military
does not track suicides among reservists who are filling an ever-increasing
number of the positions in the battle groups that are deployed for six month
rotations in Kandahar.
The figures, from the
militarys medical branch, come amid greater public awareness of the issue
following the apparent suicide of Maj. Michelle Mendes in Afghanistan and media
coverage of the growing number of cases among U.S. soldiers.
There were 128 confirmed
U.S. army suicides in 2008 - a rate of 20.2 deaths per 100,000. The U.S. Marine
Corps suicide rate was 19 per 100,000.
A broadcast report last year
claimed the number of suicides in the Canadian Forces had doubled, but that
information was based on data that was compiled from military police logs,
which included other kinds of "sudden" deaths, such as accidents.
In considering the latest
numbers, the Canadian militarys top doctor zeroed in on the three-year average
and said Canadians appeared to be faring better than their biggest ally when it
comes to dealing with the stresses of war.
Commodore Hans Jung said
there are some important differences that contribute to the slightly better
rate, including the fact that Canadian troops deploy for six month tours.
American units serve between nine and 15 months in war zones.
"That tour length is a
huge issue," the militarys surgeon-general said in an interview.
Since Canadians became
involved in major combat in 2006, there have been regular debates within the
upper ranks of the Defence Department about extending Canadian tour lengths for
battle group soldiers, but the idea has always been vetoed. Troops who serve
with support elements, such as the headquarters, are deployed for longer
stretches.
Jung said the invoking of
stop-loss orders on U.S. soldiers, which essentially prevent them from leaving
the military even though their term is up, is another factor in the higher,
average suicide rate there.
Canadas military also has a
superior mental health-education and support system, Jung claimed.
Part of the reason is the
size.
"Theyre so much larger
and they deploy for such a long time; I think they have higher stresses,"
said Jung.
The death of Mendes, a
30-year-old rising star within the officer corps, brought the question of
suicide prevention within the military into sharp focus.
Specific questions about
screening and whether she should have been deployed for a second tour into one
of the most senior intelligence positions in southern Afghanistan remain
unanswered six months after her death.
The Canadian Forces National
Investigative Service has not released the findings of its probe and claimed
last month it was still awaiting autopsy results from the Ontario coroner - a
report that has apparently now been delivered.
Whats troubling to some
opposition members is the lack of attention paid to reservists who take their
own lives.
Generally, suicides among
part-time soldiers are brought to the attention of the military by civilian
authorities, but a plan is underway to cross-reference the names of all
military members since 1972 onward to Statistics Canadas mortality database.
Liberal MP Dan McTeague, who
championed the plight of wounded soldiers and reservists, said absence of such
data eight years after the war started is startling and speaks to how the
contribution of citizen soldiers is downplayed.

Mission Statement
MISSION STATEMENT
WoundedWarriors.ca is an
independent not-for profit charity that supports Canadian soldiers and their
families, wounded overseas. It is primarily a fundraising mechanism that
supports existing programs that tends to injured soldiers with both visible and
non visible wounds.
Wounded Warriors.ca is a
registered charity;
CRA# 82808-2727-RR0001
To date, the response with
donations to the fund has been overwhelming, as Canadians are genuinely eager
to contribute to a cause that directly supports the Canadian soldier.
We invite you to peruse the
web site www . woundedwarriors . ca to
learn more about us and what we do. Better yet join the countless number of
Canadians and show your support with a donation. Our strength is 3rd party

Description
Wounded Warriors.ca is
focused on four main streams of support:
1. Canadian Segways for
Wounded Warriors - Here we donate Segway personal transportation devices to
wounded Canadian service members who have mobility issues.
2. Occupational Stress
Injury Awareness - Not all war wounds are visible (i.e. physical injuries or
missing limbs). In fact a great majority of wounds are non-visible, like that
of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. These can go undiagnosed and untreated for a
long time. Wounded Warriors.ca firmly believes in changing attitudes toward
this, within the military and among Canadians. To support this, Wounded
Warriors.ca has supported programs with Veterans Affairs Canada and the
Department of National Defence;
3. Padre's Contingency Fund
- A benevolent fund for first-line caregivers at the military hospital in
Germany.
4. Individual Support -
Helping Canadian Forces members and veterans in need on a case-by-case basis,
where other funds cannot.

Poll:
Americans divided on Obama, Putin as leaders
The Oval
David
Jackson, USA TODAY 10:05 a.m. EDT April 2, 2014
A new poll says President Obama is locked in a tight public
opinion battle with his newest political opponent: Vladimir Putin.
Voters are evenly divided — 42% to 42% — on whether Obama or
Putin is the stronger leader, according to a Quinnipiac University Poll.
"It's a tossup on who is a tougher leader, President
Barack Obama or President Vladimir Putin, as Americans weigh the heavyweight
standoff over Ukraine," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the
Quinnipiac University Poll.
Respondents gave "mixed signals" on Obama's handling
of the issue as Russia annexed the Crimea region of Ukraine, and made threats
regarding the rest of the country, the poll said.
"A total of 80% of American voters are 'very concerned'
or 'somewhat concerned' that the Ukraine situation could lead to a larger
regional conflict with U.S. military involvement. ...
"Only 24% of American voters compare Russian President
Vladimir Putin's actions in Ukraine to Adolf Hitler's actions prior to the
outbreak of World War II, while 51% say that is too strong a comparison and 21%
don't know enough about that pre-war history."

meanwhile.... ABOUT BASHING OUR HOLY LAND... ISRAEL AND OUR
JEWS.... HERE IS HOW IT STARTED.... and we cannot get the documents made
transparent to the public and/ or who the authors are.... of this organization
called ICRC or one darn piece of evidence of what this truly is . This is the
RED CROSS for goodness sake... and we should look closer at this
organization...... really! I mean... The Red Cross.... like how ugly is this!
THE ICRC (SWISS... INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED
CROSS).... AND THEIR WAR AGAINST ISRAEL...
For nearly four decades many in the international community
have insisted that Jews are forbidden to live in Judea, Samaria and Gaza
(Yesha), 'eastern Jerusalem,' and the Golan - areas conquered by Israel in
1967. Leading this fight was and is a private Swiss organization, the
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The ICRC was the first international organization to charge
that "the presence of Israeli settlements in the occupied territories is
contrary to the Geneva Convention," and therefore "unlawful."
"Any measure designed to expand or consolidate
settlements is also illegal. Confiscation of land to build or expand
settlements is similarly prohibited." (ICRC, 2009)
And the world listens, because the ICRC isn't just another
NGO; it is the official recognized authority on the Fourth Geneva Convention
(GC IV). Its decisions, therefore, were and are crucial in determining
international law and vilifying Israel. Every judicial condemnation of Israel
cites the GC and follows ICRC's interpretation.
This explains why the international community and courts have
accepted ICRC's decisions that "Israeli (Jewish) settlements violate
international law" without question.
Based on The Hague Convention, GC IV was drawn up after WWII
to protect innocent civilians and restrict brutal occupations. Unilaterally,
the ICRC turned it into a weapon to delegitimize and demonize Israel. Meeting
secretly in the early 1970's in Geneva, the ICRC determined that Israel was in
violation of the GC IV. That's been "the law" ever since.
And there's no appeal, because all decisions and protocols of
the ICRC are closed, even the identities of the people involved are secret.
Without transparency or due process, ICRC rulings became "international
law." Their condemnations of Israel provide the sole basis for accusing
Israel of "illegal occupation" of all territory conquered in 1967.
It's a legal fraud.
Article 49 of GC IV says: "The Occupying Power shall not
deport or transfer parts of its own civilian population into the territory it
occupies."
According to the ICRC, this forbids Jews from living in Judea,
Samaria, Golan and eastern Jerusalem - areas conquered by Israel in 1967 - even
though they moved there voluntarily, and prohibits any form of government assistance
to them, including roads, utilities, schools and clinics.
The ICRC's position contradicts all written agreements which
confirm the right of Jews to live in their ancestral homeland - League of
Nations and British Mandate - including the Oslo Accords.
Article 49 obviously refers to the territory of another
country, or sovereign power; Judea, Samaria and Gaza don't fit this definition.
These areas were illegally occupied by Jordan and Egypt between 1948 and 1967;
the ICRC, of course, differs, but has never satisfactorily answered the
question to which State this territory belongs.
Holding these territories in limbo for a future Palestinian
state, which may never come to fruition, whose borders are undefined and whose
intentions are openly hostile is absurd. Such ICRC antagonism to Israel,
however, is pervasive.
During WW II the ICRC visited concentration camps and gave the
Nazis a pass. After the war, they provided false passports to escaping Nazi war
criminals.
Their website demonstrates their humanitarian efforts around
the world, but when it comes to the Middle East, their story is one-sided.
During two decades of constant terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians, the
ICRC said nothing. They have written several stories about the suffering of
"Palestinians" in Gaza and Lebanon as a result of Israeli actions,
without mentioning terrorist attacks that prompted a response.
The ICRC condemned IDF actions to stop terrorism in Jenin,
Lebanon and Gaza as "massacres." They have consistently condemned
Israel for 'violations of Palestinian civil and human rights,' and accused
Israel of "war crimes." Sometimes, when these lies were exposed, the
ICRC has recanted - but not often and never with full disclosure.
Because the ICRC lacks transparency, there's no way to find
out how and why they made their decisions, or who made them. If they have
nothing to hide, why the secrecy?
The Red Cross should stick to helping people in need, not
waste resources in bashing Israel.
and heeeeeeeeeeeeeereeeeeeeeeeee's their website:
... OMG!!!!!
By the by... hasn't Switzerland been taken to task for their
actions against the Jews... the war where over 6 MILLION JEWS WERE MURDERED...
along with Catholics, Gypsies and persons because of race, colour, creed and
sexual orientation.... that war? No more hiding.... let's " get r
done!"

TAYLOR:
Dumbing down of crisis in Crimea not helpful
SCOTT
TAYLOR ON TARGET
Last
Updated March 30, 2014 - 5:46pm
As
dramatic events continue to unfold in the Ukraine over the status of the
Crimea, it is disturbing to see the western media donning their cheerleading
costumes rather than attempting to present a balanced overview.
In
the totally dumbed-down equation presented to Canadian audiences,
freedom-loving Ukrainians took to the streets of Kyiv to force their despot ruler,
President Viktor Yanukovych, from power.
We
are told Yanukovych’s undoing was that he rejected a financial bailout package
from the European Union in order to secure a similar bailout package from the
Russians. The storyline then proceeds with a rebuffed Russia, under the
direction of imperial-minded President Vladimir Putin and his oligarch
henchmen, invading the Crimea.
Then,
under the watchful eye of Russian soldiers, Putin holds a hasty referendum that
produces an overwhelming majority of the votes cast wishing to amalgamate
Crimea with Russia.
This
simple notion of Russia invading neighbouring countries and gobbling up
territory has been further dumbed-down by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who
publicly opined that Putin’s actions mirror those of Adolf Hitler’s desired
annexation of Czechoslovakia in 1938.
In
other words, according to Harper, if we conclude a similar “peace in our time”
appeasement deal such as the one brokered by British Prime Minister Neville
Chamberlain in 1938 with Hitler over Czechoslovakia, we will only have
ourselves to blame when Putin invades all of Europe in the coming months.
Of
course, while such a simple “good versus evil” scenario makes it easy to choose
sides, the current crisis in Ukraine is far from simple. Since gaining
independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine has always been a deeply
divided nation, torn between strengthening ties to the European Union and
clinging to historical roots with Russia.
The
rough dividing lines exists along the Dnieper River. On the west bank, the
largely Catholic ethnic Ukrainian population seeks European bonds, while the
predominantly Orthodox Christian ethnic Russians on the east bank lean toward
Moscow.
Forgotten
in all the violent protests to oust Yanukovych is the fact that he was the
country’s legally elected president. Also overlooked in the media coverage of
the Maiden Revolution in the streets of Kyiv is the fact that the hardcore
nucleus of the demonstrators consists of neo-Nazi thugs.
One
of the most notorious of these is Aleksandr Muzychko, a.k.a. Sashko Billy. His
Right Sector party vowed not to rest until they had killed “every Communist,
Russian and Jew” in Ukraine. It was some of these Right Sector extremists who
were killed by security forces during the demonstrations and who were
subsequently mourned by Harper and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird when
they visited Independence Square in Kyiv last week.
It
was shortly after the official Canadian delegation visited Ukraine that Sashko
Billy was executed while resisting arrest by a special unit of the Ministry of
the Interior.
While
having neo-Nazis in your midst is never a selling point when seeking bailout
funding and support, the idea that the interim Ukrainian government could
simply gun down former allies who have become an embarrassment is also not
exactly a good example of projecting a civil society.
For
the record, Sashko Billy’s loyal Right Sector followers have vowed to avenge
their fallen martyr and have declared war on the Interior Ministry.
Another
far-right Ukrainian nationalist movement, which currently holds 40 seats in the
interim parliament, is the Svoboda or Freedom Party. In another bizarre
incident largely unreported in the western media, three cabinet ministers from
Svoboda filmed themselves storming into the head office of the state-run
National Television Company. As seen in the video, they then proceed to beat
and intimidate the company director into writing his own resignation.
The
director’s offence was to broadcast Putin’s speech declaring the Crimea to be
Russian territory. One of the assailants just happens to be Ukraine’s deputy
head of the Freedom of Speech Committee.
Also
missing from the simplistic Harper and Baird Ukraine equation is the fact that
the interim parliament’s first act was to pass a bill banning the use of
Russian as the second official language.
While
President Oleksandr Turchynov has yet to approve this law, one can presume that
it sends a seriously divisive message to those ethnic Russians east of the
Dnieper and in Crimea.
Following
Harper’s visit to Kyiv in advance of the March 24 G-7 summit meeting, the media
in attendance reported to Canadians that “Canada was taking a leading role” in
the Ukraine crisis.
What
they failed to mention is that it is only a leading role if someone follows. No
other European leader has yet to so closely embrace the current Kyiv
leadership.
If
one dives headfirst into an unfamiliar watering hole while the local residents
carefully test the waters, it does not demonstrate leadership. It exemplifies
reckless abandon.
