U.S. satirical news host Stephen Colbert took a moment during Wednesday's night show to praise sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers, the hero who put down Parliament Hill gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau.
The four-minute, 32-second segment begins with a preamble to last week's "shocking" attack that killed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, injured security officer Samearn Son, and sent ministers and government staff fleeing to safety on the Hill.

"But as horrific as this incident was it would have been even worse if it hadn't been stopped by the House of Commons sergeant-at-arms, Kevin Vickers," Colbert said.
The show breaks to a clip of CBC's blow-by-blow account of Vickers' now legendary dive-spin-and-unload shooting manoeuvre that ended Zehaf-Bibeau's rampage.
"To hell with Bruce Willis, this Canadian just put the 'eh' in ‘yippee ki 'eh' motherf---er,'" Colbert said.
Colbert goes on to apologize for all the bad things he's ever said about Canadians ("maple sucking moose-humpers" etc.) and ends the segment with a truncated and altered version of 'O Canada.'

TORONTO — The extraordinary events on Parliament Hill on Wednesday had the look of a Hollywood movie or a video game.
But the fatal shooting of a reservist soldier at the National War Memorial and the killing of a gunman in the Centre Block of the nearby Parliamentary complex are starkly real events that will likely be distressing for children, psychologists warn.
They have some advice for parents who may be faced with the troubling task of trying to explain to children actions that are heinous and events that are tragic.
Here are some tips:
TALK AND LISTEN. MAINLY LISTEN
There is no way to shelter children from this event — they will hear about the attack, says Sandra Mendlowitz, a clinical psychologist in the anxiety disorders program at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children and an assistant professor of child psychiatry at the University of Toronto.
“These can be very scary moments and you need to talk to your child about what their worries are and what their concerns are. And you need to be truthful, but in a way that is (age) appropriate," she says.
“Find out what they’re worried about. Find out what they know. Because sometimes parents assume kids know things that they actually don’t know."
Children may be more likely to see the events as having real meaning for them, because they happened in Canada. This is not abstract violence. Children who feel a connection — they live in Ottawa, they have relatives in the Armed Forces, they’ve visited the Parliament Buildings — may perceive the threat as being more real than something that happens in a far off place.
“The closer you are to it, the more you’re going to want to know," says David Wolfe, a psychologist who specializes in issues affecting children and youth at Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.
“If it happened where I live or where I’ve been, then I don’t feel safe."
This probably won’t be limited to one conversation. Wolfe says you shouldn’t force children to keep discussing it if they don’t bring it up, but neither should you try to shut down children if they want to keep talking about the events.
“So long as the child is bringing it up, I would want to listen. Because it’s something bothering them," he says.
“As long as it’s in the news, as long as they are potentially confused and frightened by it, the message basically is ‘You’re safe here. And if there’s anything you’re worried about, let’s talk about it.“’
GEAR YOUR EXPLANATIONS TO YOUR AUDIENCE

Children who are 10, 11, 12 are at the age where they’re starting to realize that the world is a more complex and less safe place than they previously understood. This age group may be very troubled by these events.
“They’re the ones that ask the more penetrating questions. And I think this is a really good opportunity for parents to be able to listen and talk and reassure and not cover up. And not be false about it and say: ‘Oh, don’t worry, it’s never going to happen to us,“’ Wolfe says.
Parents should assure children that they are safe, but will also have to explain — at least to the older ones — that sometimes bad things happen.
TIME YOUR TALK
Don’t save these conversations for bedtime, Mendlowitz warns. You’ll end up with a child who can’t fall asleep.
But do bring the issue up quickly. With the speed of modern communications, kids will be inundated with information about this event almost immediately.
“It has to be a timely response because you’re up against all the other sources of information, which is fast. Faster than you can think, that information is on the Internet. So you need to be one step ahead of that," she says.
LIMIT SCREEN TIME
Images and videos of this event are all over the Internet and will lead newscasts for days.
But kids don’t need to see this stuff, and especially don’t need to see it over and over and over again, Mendlowitz says.
“One of the most important things is that we don’t over-expose kids to these images. Especially younger children," she argues. “Little kids don’t need to see these things. They really don’t."
“It’s going to be very difficult to control teenagers. They’ll have access to the Internet in any variety of forms. But even then, you have to turn off a lot of this. You don’t need to look at graphic images. It is very unsettling for children, adolescents and adults to see this. Because it is real."
BE OBSERVANT
Children may begin behaving differently — acting out, for instance — as they try to process these events, Mendlowitz says. “You need to monitor what’s going on and you need to expect that their behaviour may change in response to things that they hear."
She and Wolfe suggest parents watch for signs their kids are having trouble coping with the stress this situation may create. Changes in appetite, mood or sleep patterns are red flags.
Wolfe says boys and girls often respond differently, with the former being uncomfortable talking about their feelings or admitting to being afraid.

A video attracting a lot of
attention online proves that multiculturalism packs a punch in Canada, when the
filmmaker’s "social experiment" demonstrates how some Canadians will
leap to the defence of a Muslim person singled out for abuse, even in the wake
of recent attacks by self-radicalized Islamists.
Omar Albach --- an
18-year-old student at York University --- and two friends --- tested Canada’s
racial tolerance by staging a charade involving an actor dressed head-to-toe in
traditional Islamic garb and another Caucasian actor who accosts him in public.
They recorded what
transpired on a video posted to YouTube, ‘Canadians react to Ottawa shooting
racism,’ that has attracted a lot of attention since it was posted on Monday,
garnering more than 400,000 views as of Wednesday morning.

The "racist"
character in the video asks the "Muslim" character to step out of a
line of people waiting for a bus, accusing him of being a terrorist threat.
None of the bystanders in the video support the "Islamophobic" actor.
One man emphatically rejects the diatribe, pointing out that Canadians can’t
blame all Muslims for the violent action of fanatics.
"You know what? You
can’t stereotype and judge people by their clothes," the man says in the
video.
Another man gets so
aggravated that he punches the heckling actor in the face, giving him a bloody
nose.
Albach, who was born in
Canada of Palestinian descent says the purpose of the video was to “to see if
people feel safe around Muslims or people who look like Muslims.”
The video was created in
Hamilton, Ont. --- the home town of murdered Canadian soldier Cpl. Nathan
Cirillo --- to gauge if Canadian Islamophobia was on the rise following the
shooting rampage by lone wolf gunman Michael Zehaf-Bibeau at the National War
Memorial and Parliament Hill last week.
"I wanted to see how
that would change the views of Canadians," Albach told CTV News Channel in
an interview Wednesday.
"They all responded
perfectly, they all stood up for the Muslim man," he said.
Albach, who is Muslim, feels
encouraged by the outcome of his video.
"I’ve learned that
Canada is very tolerant --- it’s proven that Canadians have become more
tolerant and knowledgeable about who is a terrorist (and who is not) --- and just
because there is one radicalized person in a sect or religion does not make
every person in that religion a radicalized person," he told CTV News
Channel.

NEW YORK — Elton John called
Pope Francis “my hero” for his compassion and push to accept gays in the
Catholic church, at his annual AIDS benefit.
John hosted the event, An
Enduring Vision: A Benefit for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Tuesday night in
New York City. He said Francis is pushing boundaries in the church and told the
crowd: “Make this man a saint now, OK?”
“Ten years ago one of the
biggest obstacles in the fight against AIDS was the Catholic Church. Today we
have a pope that speaks out about it,” said John, earning cheers from the
attendees at Cipraini’s on Wall Street.
Catholic bishops scrapped
their landmark welcome to gays earlier this month, showing deep divisions at
the end of a two-week meeting sought by Francis to chart a more merciful
approach to ministering to Catholic families. An earlier draft of the document
offered a welcoming tone of acceptance, but that was stripped away after the
bishops failed to reach consensus on a watered-down section on ministering to
homosexuals.
“He is a compassionate,
loving man who wants everybody to be included in the love of God,” John said of
the pope. “It is formidable what he is trying to do against many, many people
in the church that opposes. He is courageous and he is fearless, and that’s
what we need in the world today.”
John, who wrote an op-ed for
New York Times on Tuesday, also honoured New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his
plan to end the AIDS epidemic in his state by 2020.
“Good evening to all of you,
the queen of England,” Cuomo said as the crowd laughed, “I’m from Queens, but I
think there’s a different interpretation there.”
More jokes came throughout
the night, where attendees included John’s husband, David Furnish, Neil Patrick
Harris, Alec Baldwin, Matt Lauer and host Anderson Cooper. A lunch date with
newsmen was part of the auction, dubbed the “great anchor sandwich,” and it
sold for $40,000.
“I will give a little extra
with dessert if you know what I mean,” Cooper said at the top of the event. “It
could be a long, saucy lunch.”
Mike Myers jumped onstage to
offer himself for a lunch date following the bid for Cooper and Lauer, and his
was auctioned for $50,000. A Damien Hirst painting sold for $270,000 and a
Robert Mapplethorpe sold for $90,000.
John, who sat while the
honorees gave speeches, said he was recovering from a knee operation that took
place last week. He performed a rousing set at the end of the night, singing
hits like Tiny Dancer and Your Song while playing the piano.
Four tickets and backstage
access to his New Year’s Eve concert at the Barclays Center sold for $35,000.
