Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy took home five awards – including best director – as the Canadian Screen Awards were celebrated in Toronto on Sunday night.

The single event, a salute to the best in Canadian TV and film, replaced the separate Gemini and Genie awards.

Comedian Martin Short hosted the event and stars from City – like Cityline’s Tracy Moore and Breakfast Television’s Dina Pugliese – graced the red carpet.

Sci-fi series Orphan Black dominated the television awards, taking home best drama and and best actress for star Tatiana Maslany.

CBC, CTV, GLOBAL AND ROGERS PARTNER TO HOST THE RED CARPET PORTION OF THE CANADIAN SCREEN AWARDS
Personalities from ET Canada, eTalk, Entertainment City and CBC will bring Canadians all the action from the red carpet beginning at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC-TV
MARCH 5, 2014 – In a rare, unprecedented move, Canadian broadcasters CBC, Bell Media, Rogers Media and Shaw Media are pairing up to host the red-carpet portion of the Canadian Screen Awards on Sunday, March 9, 2014, at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC-TV. Each network will have their on-air talent involved in honouring the Canadian celebrities in attendance while counting down to Martin Short’s opening number.
The unique cross-network approach allows for a truly collaborative effort to showcase Canadian film and television talent and reach the largest Canadian audience possible. The show will see etalk’s Ben Mulroney, ET Canada’s Cheryl Hickey, and Entertainment City’s Dina Pugliese, alongside Heather Hiscox and Eli Glasner of CBC on the red carpet, as they interview and celebrate the Canadian actors and directors making their way into the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts.
"It is a major milestone to have all the broadcasters working on the Canadian Screen Awards which exist to promote the film, television and digital industries," says Helga Stephenson, CEO Academy Canadian Cinema & Television. "We welcome their input and thank them for their passion and commitment to these awards."
The idea was originally proposed by CBC’s executive director of Studio and Unscripted Content, Jennifer Dettman, to a room filled with the country’s top television executives: Shaw Media’s senior vice president, Content, Barb Williams and vice president, Original Content, Christine Shipton, Rogers Media’s director of Original Programming, Nataline Rodrigues and Bell Media’s vice president, Communications, Scott Henderson. It was unanimously agreed that uniting to co-produce the red carpet portion of the show would help achieve the goal of celebrating and showcasing Canadian talent in the broadest manner.
Talent confirmed to present at this year’s Canadian Screen Awards include Liane Balaban (The Grand Seduction), Jay Baruchel (The Art of the Steal), Evelyne Brochu (Tom at the Farm), Amanda Brugel (Seed), Arisa Cox (Big Brother Canada), Dave Foley (Spun Out), Cara Gee (Empire of Dirt), Heritage Minister Shelly Glover, Lauren Holly (Motive), Matthew Johnson(The Dirties), Mia Kirshner (I Think I Do), Adam Korson(Seed), Jessica Lowndes (90210), Amber Marshall (Heartland), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black, Cas & Dylan), Shay Mitchell (Pretty Little Liars), Jon Montgomery (The Amazing Race Canada), Zoie Palmer (Lost Girl), Jessica Paré (Mad Men), Missy Peregrym (Rookie Blue), Jennifer Podemski (Empire of Dirt), Jason Priestley (Call Me Fitz), singer-songwriter Serena Ryder, Anna Silk(Lost Girl), George Stroumboulopoulos (George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight) and David Sutcliffe (Cracked). Director David Cronenberg will be honoured with the 2014
Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be presented by his friend and long-time collaborator, actor Viggo Mortensen.
Tune in to catch these stars and more at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards airing Sunday, March 9, 2014, beginning at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC-TV.

Prince Harry ushers in the Invictus Games

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s Prince Harry is launching the Invictus Games, a new sporting event for wounded, injured and sick service personnel.

Inspired by a visit to the Warrior Games in the United States, Harry described the Paralympic-style competition as “such a good idea by the Americans that it had to be stolen.”

He told reporters Thursday the he’d seen “how the power of sport can positively impact the lives of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women.”
The games will be funded in part from a government fund holding proceeds of fines levied on banks for manipulating currency rates.
Jaguar Land Rover will be a sponsor of the September event featuring athletes from

 Britain,
 Afghanistan,
 Australia,
Canada,
 Denmark,
 Estonia,
 France,
Germany,
 Iraq,
Italy,
 Netherlands,
 New Zealand
 and the United States.

Cape Breton’s First Lady of Song, Rita MacNeil, and late rock guitarist Jay Smith are among the recipients of honorary awards during April’s East Coast Music Week in Charlottetown.

Big Pond musical ambassador MacNeil, who died last April, will join the ranks of those who’ve received the East Coast Music Association’s Directors’ Special Achievement Award.

Smith, who played with Rock Ranger and Matt Mays’ El Torpedo as well as collaborating with many Canadian songwriters before his death in March of 2013, will be remembered with the Musician’s Achievement Award.

Other honorary awards during East Coast Music Week, April 2 to 6, include the Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award, which will go to musical family and Rollo Bay Fiddle Festival founders the Chaisson Trio, and the Industry Builder Award, for P.E.I. music manager Grady Poe.

There are also five recipients of the Stompin’ Tom Award, including Cape Breton musician Flo Sampson, Atlantic/Halifax Jazz Festival founder Susan Hunter, P.E.I. musician and instructor Alan Dowling, Newfoundland choral and string conductor and educator Kellie Walsh and New Brunswick music journalist Bob Mersereau.

“ECMA is happy to honour the industry players and musicians who have left a lasting mark on the Atlantic Canadian music scene,” said Heather Gibson, chairwoman of the ECMA board of directors in a news release on Wednesday. “Their talent, commitment, and impact on the industry continues to inspire.”

The Director’s Special Achievement Award, Dr. Helen Creighton Lifetime Achievement Award and Musician’s Achievement Award will be presented at the East Coast Music Awards Gala on Sun., April 6. The Industry Builder and Stompin’ Tom Awards will be handed out at the Industry Awards Brunch on Sat., April 5.

ECMW organizers also announced an expanded lineup of showcase artists on Wednesday, including Nova Scotia acts Basinview Rocks, Heather Green, Little Miss Moffat, Neon Dreams, Ria Mae and Wordburglar, among others, plus a special Showcase Scotland component bringing artists and music industry figures to the event from across the Atlantic. There will also be an electronic music component presented by Red Bull Music Academy, featuring a workshop with Halifax DJ Skratch Bastid, who will also headline the Gala Awards post-party at the P.E.I. Convention Centre.
