SOME FACTS:

Mr Juncker has also supported a minimum wage across the EU.
However, he is generally held to be a pragmatic deal-maker and power broker rather than an out-and-out ideologue.
He was central to the fraught negotiations over the 1997 Stability and Growth Pact that originally underpinned the eurozone - a fact that hardly recommends him to Eurosceptics in the UK.
In 2005 Mr Juncker was heavily involved in amending that rulebook after Berlin and Paris broke the deficit limits.
When the eurozone descended into crisis in 2008, again it was Mr Juncker at the heart of efforts to ensure its survival, from Greece's bail-out to forging a banking union across member states.

The intense work reportedly took a toll on his health, with concern expressed in some quarters about his heavy smoking.

In an interview with Die Welt, Jean-Claude Juncker, the EPP’s candidate for European Commission President, argues, “As Europeans we have been active in many areas except for social policy where we have taken a back seat…I would like that in the EU we would agree on minimum standards for employment law, employment protection and the tackling of poverty.” Welt: Juncker

Rather than make Europeans more employable and increase their standard of living, policies such as those advocated by Herr Juncker will have the opposite effect. Employment laws always mean more costly regulations on employment, plus minimum wages which price out of the labor market many of the young and those with few skills. Employment protection means that once a business hires a person, it will find it difficult to end employment and must continue paying for labor services that are no longer desired. The consequences of such laws are not lost on business. And, finally, tackling poverty always means redistributing wealth. That wealth will be withdrawn from the nation’s capital base or it will never enter the capital base due to excessive taxation.

This is the reality of the situation, which, of course, no vote-buying politician wishes to acknowledge.

Commission Crusade: Cameron Outmaneuvered in Battle over Juncker

Jean-Claude Juncker will likely be made European Commission President over the objections of British Prime Minister David Cameron.

British Prime Minister David Cameron is determined not to let Jean-Claude Juncker become president of the European Commission. But he is increasingly isolated. He might face his Waterloo as early as next week.

Reading the newspaper hasn't been particularly pleasurable for Jean-Claude Juncker in recent days. First, British historian Timothy Garton Ash compared him to King Louis the XVI, who was executed by the guillotine. Then, the Swiss paper Weltwoche lumped him together with Hitler and Mussolini and the British tabloid Sun described him as "the most dangerous man in Europe."

Juncker had suspected that the British press in particular would go on the attack against him, but he recently had to summon the police after paparazzi climbed over a fence into his property. Furthermore, his 90-year-old father burst into tears when a tabloid accused him of Nazi association. (The older Juncker was forceably recruited into the Wehrmacht following the occupation of Luxembourg.)

The situation is a delicate one: British Prime Minister David Cameron continues to categorically reject Juncker as the next president of the European Commission. Yet a majority in the European Parliament supports the former Luxembourg prime minister. The European Council, made up of EU heads of state and government, has the power of nomination, but the body is divided.

Several voices, including the influential German weekly Die Zeit last week, have called on Juncker to withdraw his candidacy as a final service to Europe. It is a potential solution that Berlin, too, could live with, despite Chancellor Angela Merkel's official support for Juncker's candidacy.

But Juncker, 59, has no intention of doing Merkel and Cameron that favor. It's a matter of principle, he argues. He campaigned as the lead candidate for European conservatives ahead of last month's EU elections, with the assumption being that the winner would become Commission president. Should he not be confirmed for that office, he says, it amounts to voter betrayal.

Power Plays

More than anything, though, a European power struggle is afoot. If Cameron prevails, the European Council will continue to reign supreme and the Parliament will continue to look like little more than a European debate club. "The will of the voters is as legitimate in the EU election as it is in other elections," says Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann. "To ignore the results of the election would damage European democracy."

Early on, Merkel backed Cameron's position. At a dinner of EU leaders two days after the European election, she threatened to assemble a blocking minority together with the British prime minister. Cameron's warning -- that if Juncker was named to the position, it could accelerate Britain's exit from the EU -- had its intended effect. Almost all significant UK parties are opposed to Juncker, who they see as a European technocrat unable to reform the Commission. Only the EU-skeptic party UKIP is in favor or Juncker, say pro-EU voices in Britain, noting that a Juncker presidency would make it even easier for the party to sell its anti-Europe message.

But in Germany, the chancellor was accused of not supporting her own party's candidate and she quickly made an about face -- after telephoning with Cameron first to explain her reversal. The British prime minister was understanding, but continues to hope for German support when the time comes.

That, though, is looking increasingly unlikely. Last week, the European Conservatives and Reformists group in European Parliament, which Cameron formed in 2009 following his withdrawal from the center-right European People's Party (to which Merkel's Christian Democrats belong), voted to accept the euro-skeptic German party Alternative for Germany (AfD) into its ranks. Merkel had asked Cameron to prevent just that -- and his Tories claim they tried. But, as one CDU politician noted last week, the Tories are so "extensively infiltrated" by euro skeptics that any anti-AfD campaign within their ranks did not seem credible.

There have been efforts to find a compromise. One possible solution is for the Commission to incorporate many of Britain's reform wishes into its governing plan for the next five years in exchange for London's acceptance of Juncker. Merkel herself has spoken with Juncker several times in an effort to pave the way for such a solution.

Cameron Acted 'Utterly Clumsily'

But many in Berlin are beginning to believe that Cameron is uninterested in a compromise. Instead of softening his rhetoric, his is ratcheting up the pressure. Juncker was "nowhere on the ballot," he wrote last Fridayin an op-ed published in several European papers. "Each of the main political groups ran 'lead candidates' ... during the elections," Cameron wrote, "and did a back-room deal to join forces after the elections in support of the lead candidate of the party that won the most seats."

"Juncker's democratic legitimacy is not in question," Xavier Bettel, Juncker's liberal successor as the prime minister of Luxembourg, countered. The Commission president, he noted, will ultimately be confirmed by European Parliament. Merkel also rejected Cameron's position.

Cameron remains undeterred. This week, he vowed to fight Juncker's appointment "right up to the end," adding, "There is absolutely no question of changing my view."

One leading member of Merkel's CDU says Cameron has acted "incredibly clumsily, from a strategic perspective." He argues that the British prime minister should have come to terms with Juncker's being installed as Commission president back in March, when European conservatives chose him as their lead candidate. "But Cameron never had a plan B in case Juncker prevailed," the CDU politician continued.

Even a meeting last week between Cameron, Merkel, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Swedish leader Fredrik Reinfeldt only hurt the British position. Rutte and Reinfeldt said they were prepared to debate policy but did not want to focus solely on Juncker. "Cameron is increasingly isolating himself," says Elmar Brok, a member of European Parliament for the CDU. "In the end, there will be a clear majority for Juncker in the Council." Even Council President Herman Van Rompuy has recently said that Cameron could be isolated.

But that raises another question: What will then happen to Martin Schulz, the SPD lead candidate who was defeated in the election? Without his Socialist faction in parliament, Juncker won't have a majority. To secure that support, Juncker has promised Schulz the position of Commission vice president. Austrian Prime Minister Faymann has joined those supporting the deal: "Jean-Claude Juncker and Martin Schulz are the logical contenders for the top European roles, working as a team for Europe." But with each country getting only one spot on the Commission, that would mean that Merkel's CDU, which got the most votes in Germany in the May election, would come away empty-handed.

Push for Quick Decision

Last Tuesday evening, Merkel briefed Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel , who is head of Germany's Social Democrats, on her meeting in Sweden. She did not, however, offer a way out of the dilemma. The chancellor knows, though, just how important Schulz is to a solution.

Two days later, Schulz met with Hannes Swoboda, the outgoing Socialist floor leader in European Parliament --a job that Schulz was tapped for on Wednesday -- and with Council President Van Rompuy. "We, as Social Democrats, support Jean-Claude Juncker's mandate to build a majority in parliament," Schulz told Van Rompuy. But, he added, it won't be easy to unify Socialists behind a conservative leader. A conservative replacement for Juncker, he said, is impossible.

Several EU leaders would like to see the decision on Juncker to be made at next week's regularly scheduled summit. "We can't give the impression that we are unable to reach agreement," says Luxembourgian Prime Minister Bettel. "I expect that we will achieve a qualified majority at the next summit." There is a large majority in favor of Juncker within the Council, he says. "We can't wait for months. Otherwise we risk an institutional crisis in the EU."

Europe is failing its young people. How can we change this?

failyoungpeopleHow can we fight youth unemployment? Somehow, the politicians, economists and other ‘experts’ whose job it is to answer this question are never young people themselves. But what do young citizens – who are more than twice as likely to be jobless than older Europeans – think is the best solution to kick-start the economy and make sure more jobs are being filled by young workers?

Given that the majority of our readers fall into the age group 18-24 (with the 25-34 age bracket in second place), it’s likely that some of you reading this are asking the same question. In 2013, over 5.5 million people under 25 were unemployed (23.2%). The highest rates were found in Greece (52.9%), Spain (54.3%) and Croatia (49.2%). Meanwhile, Germany (7.4%) and Austria (8.9%) were the countries where youth unemployment rates were lowest.

What can the EU do to help? And what are the solutions put forward by the different parties? As part of our Road to the Elections debate series, we talked to the presidents of the youth wings of five European political parties: the Centre-Right, the Social Democrats, the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and the Conservatives. To each of them we asked the same question: “What will your party do to create jobs for Europe’s younger generation?”

Take a look at their answers below and let us know who you agree with. First, we spoke to Kostas Kyranakis, President and spokesperson of the Youth of the European People’s Party. He believes that millions of jobs can be created by simply focusing on three priorities: tax incentives for job creators, skills-based education and simpler registration of companies:

Moreover, he argues that the Youth Guarantee scheme is not working. First put forward by the Commission in 2009, the scheme aims to guarantee everybody under 25 a quality job, apprenticeship, traineeship, or continued education offer within four months of graduating. It received strong support from both the Social Democrats and the Greens. Five years after it was first proposed, however, does Kaisa Penny, President of the Young European Socialist, still support the initiative?

The third person we spoke to was Jeroen Diepemaat, President of the European Liberal Youth – the youth wing of the Liberal Democrats. Whereas Kostas and Kaisa focus on what the EU and national governments should do to create jobs, the European Liberal Youth says creating jobs should be left to companies themselves. By giving companies free space to hire new people, Diepemaat argues that more opportunities will be given to people who want to enter the labour market for the first time.

Next, we spoke to Michael Bloss, co-spokesperson of the Federation for the Young European Greens. Like the Social Democrats, the Greens support the Youth Guarantee but believe that it has been implemented poorly. So far, much less has been invested than the 21 billion euros the International Labour Organisation (ILO) estimates will be needed to make the scheme a success. Moreover, Bloss argues that by focusing on developing specific sectors of the economy, the EU can create jobs whilst simultaneously putting Europe on a more environmentally sustainable path:

Finally, we spoke with Tim Dier, President of the Young European Conservatives. His approach was similar to the Liberal Democrats’ view, in that Tim thinks that Europe should allow businesses the space to succeed and create a more flexible labour market. Moreover, he argued that free trade with the rest of the world will not only create jobs, but also help developing countries to trade their way out of poverty.

Halifax veteran given French honour

Haligonian Russell Hubley, a Second World War veteran involved in the 1944 campaign to liberate France from Nazi rule, has joined other foreigners who’ve been awarded the French Legion of Honour.

France’s consul general to the Atlantic provinces presented his country’s highest decoration to Hubley on Friday during a ceremony at 12 Wing Shearwater.

The former airman was a member of the Canadian military when Allied Forces stormed French beaches on D-Day, 70 years ago, and later pushed inland during an effective operation to free France from German control.

BRUSSELS, June 22 (Xinhua) -- The Heads of state or government of the European Union (EU) member states during their meeting next week will commemorate the outbreak of the First World War (WWI).

The EU leaders will meet on June 26 in Ypres, a Belgian town located in the Flemish province of West Flanders, for a commemoration ceremony to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the WWI, according to the agenda unveiled by the EU.

During WWI, Ypres was the center of intense and sustained battles between German and Allied Forces. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians from all over the world lost their lives in Ypres.

The European Council's working sessions will take place on June 27 in Brussels at the usual venue.

The leaders are expected to adopt conclusions on the future of the Economic and Monetary Union based on the preparatory work carried out by the European Council's president in close consultation with the presidents of the Commission, the European Central Bank and the Eurogroup.

The fear of a federal Europe has eurosceptics riled once again. David Cameron is increasingly dialling up his rhetoric in response to Jean-Claude Juncker’s candidacy for head of the European Commission, with Juncker’s reported advocacy for a “United States of Europe” driving right-wing euroscepticism to a new pitch – unsurprising after a European parliament election that saw a broad surge in anti-EU voting.
The eurosceptic advance in the elections led to much comment about the apparent linkage between the “far right” and anti-Europeanism. Many commentators continue to run with the assumption that opposition to the European project is a given for the far right, and that the two are synonymous.
This is questionable in the context of today’s politics, but historically it’s downright incorrect. The far right in Europe has often been enthusiastically pan-European.
In the aftermath of the 2014 elections, it is clear that an anti-EU stance is not exclusively a marker of the far right. The successes of the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) in Greece and the Five Star Movement in Italy show that opposition to the EU can be found across the political spectrum. But just as euroscepticism is not tied to one political tendency, nor is europhilia – and if we take an historical look at the far right, we find a long history of pan-Europeanism.
Federate or be destroyed
World War I not only saw the end of three multi-ethnic Empires in Europe, but ushered in successor nation states and the new force of Bolshevism. The devastated “mighty continent” was faced with the global challenge of the USA, the only combatant nation to emerge enriched from the conflict.
For some ideologues on the far right, these changes meant that Europe had to abandon nationalism. One such thinker was the Great War veteran, novelist and political activist Pierre Drieu la Rochelle. In a series of books and articles, Drieu la Rochelle argued that Europe faced a stark choice. Writing in 1922, he argued that “if Europe does not federate she will destroy herself or be destroyed by others”.
He expanded on this federalist dream in Genève ou Moscou (1928), L’Europe Contre les Patries (1931), and in his collection of essays Socialisme Fasciste (1934). It was his belief in a European state that led him to active collaboration with the Nazi occupation of France – and his dismay at the failure of his European idea was expressed in his novel L’homme à Cheval (1943). After Liberation in 1944, Drieu went into hiding in Paris, then committed suicide – and in doing so, created a potent myth of martyrdom for the post-war far right.

New Europe, New Order
If Drieu la Rochelle’s belief in a European project underpinned his collaborationism, then he was far from being alone. Once Nazi Germany attacked its erstwhile ally, the Soviet Union, a new propaganda opportunity opened for the Nazi regime. Now German expansionism was no longer presented as the triumph of the Nazi state, but as a European crusade against Bolshevism. In response to that idea, volunteers poured into the recruiting stations, not only in countries occupied by Germany, but also in those that were not, such as Spain and Vichy France.
There was a high degree of Nazi cynicism in play here – but as the war turned against the Nazis, so the European idea gained greater traction. In particular, the SS made it a core plank of the recruitment and indoctrination of volunteers for the Waffen SS. By 1944, more than half of the 900,000 men in the Waffen SS were non-Germans, motivated by an ideological mix of anti-Communism, anti-Semitism and pan-Europeanism and fighting under slogans proclaiming a “New Europe” and a “New Order”.
It wasn’t just the Nazis who pushed the idea of a united Europe. After the collapse of Mussolini’s government in Rome, and the dictator’s temporary imprisonment, the Fascists set up a new government and party based at Salo. The Fascist Republican Party held its first congress in November, 1943, and agreed a new manifesto – point eight of the Fascist Manifesto argued for “the realisation of a European community, with a federation of all nations” which accepted Fascist principles. Interestingly, the UK was specifically ruled out of this Fascist utopia due to its “euroscepticism”!

Nation Europa
In the UK, Britain’s leading pre-war fascist, Sir Oswald Mosley, returned to politics in the post-war period with his conception of “European socialism”, fighting under the slogan of “Europe a Nation”.

Mosley’s The Alternative (1947) was influenced by pan-European ideas, and he went on to claim that as he had abandoned nationalism, so he had abandoned fascism. The concept of a united Europe found a strong purchase among the post-war far right, as it sought to rescue its politics from the ruins of total war and genocide and find an answer to Europe’s weakness in the face of Soviet and American power.
For many on the far right, the idea of “Nation Europa” seemed to offer new possibility for their politics, and it transformed their vision of how the continent should look.
The strong, continuous tradition of pan-Europeanism on the far right is undeniable. Just as the anti-EU tendency is not confined to parties on the political right, neither is support for a European “project” confined to the centrist mainstream.

As a WW II baby..... our worlds were so hard.... even though as victors we licked our wounds.... mourned our beloved who we lost.... and looked at ruined farmlands because all were on the lines battling for freedom for us and our children ....we lost 9 miles of farmland..... and to have shoes was the sign of the wealtlhy.... we recycled all and everything before it became the 'it' word...... and used it all again.... we did as we were told..... and worked our guts out.... and school was a treasure.... and a pleasure...... because so many elders had neither....

You gave freedom... and Canada true glory..... honour.... and as our youngbloods are the Guardians of our flag and country today.... have shown..... that a small number of people in the 2nd largest country on the planet..... from all working folk careers..... can stand up for freedom.... and will ... each and every time.... just seem to know how to write a letter?

This one surely does!

This was written by a Canadian woman, but oh how

it also applies to the U.S.A., U.K. and Australia .

THIS ONE PACKS A FIRM PUNCH

Written by a housewife in New Brunswick , to

her local newspaper. This is one ticked off lady...

"Are we fighting a war on terror or aren't we? Was

it or was it not, started by Islamic people who

brought it to our shores on September 11, 2001

and have continually threatened to do so since?

Were people from all over the world, not brutally murdered

that day, in downtown Manhattan , across the Potomac from

the capitol of the USA and in a field in Pennsylvania?

Did nearly three thousand men, women and children die a horrible, burning or crushing death that day, or didn't they?

Do you think I care about four U. S. Marines urinating on some dead Taliban insurgents?

And I'm supposed to care that a few Taliban were

claiming to be tortured by a justice system of a

nation they are fighting against in a brutal Insurgency.

I'll care about the Koran when the fanatics in the Middle

East, start caring about the Holy Bible, the mere belief

of which, is a crime punishable by beheading in Afghanistan .

I'll care when these thugs tell the world they are

sorry for hacking off Nick Berg's head, while Berg

screamed through his gurgling slashed throat.

I'll care when the cowardly so-called insurgents

in Afghanistan , come out and fight like men,

instead of disrespecting their own religion by

hiding in Mosques and behind women and children.

I'll care when the mindless zealots who blow

themselves up in search of Nirvana, care about the

innocent children within range of their suicide Bombs.

I'll care when the Canadian media stops pretending that

their freedom of Speech on stories, is more important than

the lives of the soldiers on the ground or their families waiting

at home, to hear about them when something happens.

In the meantime, when I hear a story about a

CANADIAN soldier roughing up an Insurgent

terrorist to obtain information, know this:

I don't care.

When I see a wounded terrorist get shot in the

head when he is told not to move because he

might be booby-trapped, you can take it to the bank:

I don't care. Shoot him again.

When I hear that a prisoner, who was issued a Koran and a prayer mat, and fed 'special' food, that is paid for by my tax dollars, is complaining that his holy book is being 'mishandled,' you can absolutely believe, in your heart of hearts:

I don't care.

And oh, by the way, I've noticed that sometimes

it's spelled 'Koran' and other times 'Quran.'

Well, Jimmy Crack Corn you guessed it.

I don't care!!

If you agree with this viewpoint, pass this on to

all your E-mail Friends. Sooner or later, it'll get to

the people responsible for this ridiculous behavior!

If you don't agree, then by all means hit the delete

button. Should you choose the latter, then please don't

complain when more atrocities committed by radical

Muslims happen here in our great Country! And may I add:

Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering, if

during their life on earth, they made a difference in

the world. But, the Soldiers don't have that problem.
