A look at the Dominion of Canada, second largest country in the world and the most prominent North American monarchy. Canada was settled by the French and English with Great Britain taking the whole area in the French & Indian War. Canada was successfully defended from the American Revolution and British, Canadian and Indian forces soundly defeated repeated invasion attempts by the US during the War of 1812. Canada came into its own under the reign of Queen Victoria and during World War I the valor of Canadian troops proved that the country had come of age with the Germans categorizing the Canadian Expeditionary Force as "shock troops". The large influx of loyalists after the American Revolution led to the legacy of Canada being considered the part of English-speaking North America most loyal, monarchist and mature. The national anthem is "Oh Canada" and the official languages are English and French. Interesting note: at the founding of the unified Canada the country was going to be called the "Kingdom of Canada" but the name was changed to "Dominion of Canada" for fear that the term "kingdom" would offend the staunchly republican United States.

COMMENT:

I've just seen a program on British TV about War Plan Red. I had no idea that America had detailed plans to invade Canada in 1930. It seems that they feared the British Empire more than Nazi Germany or even the Russians! This would have been the start of a war that would have involved around seven million troops and would have eclipsed the first world war. I'm? astounded! Now i understand the friction between America and Canada that stil persists to thid day.

Brokaw hunts down Gander 9/11 story

?

NBC newsman Tom Brokaw was in Gander on Thursday, investigating a story that's now old news - the role residents of the Newfoundland town played during the Sept. 11 attacks.

When air traffic was shut down on Sept. 11, 2001, dozens of planes landed in the town - so many that there were too few hotel rooms for the passengers. The people of Gander readily opened their doors.

"Every passenger that we've talked to will remember this experience for the rest of their lives, and they feel like Gander's a second home," said Brokaw, who is making an NBC special on the 2001 story.

"They had people come up and say 'That's my house, it's open and there's lots of towels in the bathroom, you can go take a shower, I won't be home, but it's fine. And by the way, the fridge is full.' People who live in Atlanta or live in New York or in Houston, they're not used to that kind of trust, and they carried that away with them as well."

Pre-Olympics special

Brokaw has interviewed dozens of passengers about the impact of that day on their lives for the special, to air just ahead of the 2010 Olympic Games. Brokaw said NBC likes to tell an uplifting story about the relations between the U.S. and the host country of each Olympics.

"Well you know, we've got the Olympics coming up in Vancouver next year, and we always look for a story that reflects the country we're in, and when we were scouting around this seemed to be the best story about the ties between the U.S. and Canada," he said.

"I knew it was a good story before I got here, but once I got here I realized just how rich it really is. It's a great tribute to the people of this area, and I think it had a lasting impact on all the passengers."

NBC crews have been shooting in Gambo and Gander this summer, and Brokaw interviewed Gander Mayor Claude Elliott on Thursday.

Elliott has told the story to dozens of reporters, but meeting Brokaw was special, he said.

"It's just that he's an icon, and it's always a pleasure to meet him, but I'm hoping he's considering it a pleasure to meet me too, you know, so we'll both probably be a little bit nervous." Elliott said.

Brokaw was impressed with Elliott's take on the events.

"What I love to hear from a politician in this day and age is 'We don't take extra credit for this - this is what we are and this is what we would do again,'" Brokaw said.

The promises of the United Nations

We have seen failures of the United Nations in protecting refugees. If the world stands by and watches, the same could happen to Iranian refugees in Iraq.

WARSAW, Poland, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- We have often seen failures of the United Nations in protecting refugees in danger zones. It happened in Rwanda, Bosnia and Sri Lanka with thousands of innocent people killed. If the world continues to stand by and just watch, the same could happen to several thousand Iranian refugees in Iraq.

I recently attended a hearing in Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament for Martin Kobler, whose tenure as head of the U.N. Assistance Mission to Iraq was ended this month with a controversial record.

UNAMI's mandate in Iraq includes "promoting the protection of human rights and judicial and legal reform," among other responsibilities. But instead the head of UNAMI had been accused of repeatedly distorting the realities on the ground in Iraq, particularly in regards to the fate of the Iranian refugees in Camp Liberty.

The refugees in Liberty aren't ordinary refugees but members of Iran's largest opposition group, the People's Mujahedin of Iran.

They have resided in Camp Ashraf, north of Baghdad for 25 years, fighting for a democratic secular Iran. As a result they have become targets of the Iranian regime and its agents in Iraq.

Due to pressure from the Iraqi government, and ongoing threats against Camp Ashraf, UNAMI took the lead to move the residents to a "safer" location named Camp Liberty just outside Baghdad airport. It was designated a "transit camp," a step in the process of rapid resettlement abroad.

But instead Camp Liberty has turned into a "killing field." The residents have been murdered and injured in repeated rocket attacks against the camp, while only a tiny percentage of the population have been able to leave to other countries in the past two years.

From the start of the relocation, the U.N. envoy acted with duplicity. He misrepresented the conditions in Camp Liberty by showing doctored photographs of the camp and making promises that it was safe and secure. The truth about Camp Liberty was exposed by the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which described the conditions as nothing short of a prison.

UNAMI also closely collaborated with the governments of Iraq and Iran, which would like nothing more than to see the Iranian opposition suffer and be destroyed.

I was particularly appalled of the attempts to white wash the massacre of dozens of Iraqi protesters. During his testimony at the European Parliament, the U.N. envoy vaguely stated that the Iraqi military has a "problem with crowd control," while offering no direct criticism of the government.

The pattern of deceit and distortion continued during his concluding testimony in front of the U.N. Security Council in New York in July. He took the opportunity to once again demonize the refugees in Liberty, and project his own failures in relocation and security onto the defenseless camp members.

However U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Gutierrez has taken a more responsible position. He recently released a statement that highlighted the legitimate concerns of the residents of Liberty. In contrast to UNAMI's claim that the leadership in the camp is responsible for its own "rights abuses," the UNHCR took a firm stance toward the Maliki government in Baghdad.

"International law requires that asylum-seekers must be able to benefit from basic protection of their security and well-being ...The primary responsibility for ensuring respect for these standards lies with the government of Iraq. Freedom of movement is the most desirable state while processing takes place," the statement noted.

The statement by UNHCR stands in stark contrast to the misinformation disseminated by Martin Kobler, indeed he became such a problem that the United Nations had to save face by transferring him to a new position as U.N. envoy to the Congo.

The move could be aimed to remedy the damage that he has done to the credibility of the United Nations. His broken promises have not only shattered the credibility of UNAMI and that of the U.N. secretary-general who backed him until the last day but have paved the way for the killing of innocent refugees in Iraq.

Had it not been for the international efforts of the residents' families and their supporters abroad, these refugees would have been massacred just as Srebrenica.

Despite these bitter lessons, I remain optimistic that the new head of UNAMI, my former colleague in European Parliament from Bulgaria Nikolay Mladenov, will be objective to take the issue of the security of the refugees in Ashraf and Liberty seriously and to defend those values and principles that the United Nations was once based on.

Jesus

Jesus depicted as the Good Shepherd

(stained glass at St John's Ashfield)

Jesus (pron.: /'d?i?z?s/; Greek: ??s??? Iesous; 7–2 BC/BCE to 30–36 AD/CE), also referred to as Jesus of Nazareth, is the central figure of Christianity, whom a majority of Christian denominations believe to be the Son of God.[11]

Virtually all scholars of antiquity agree that Jesus existed.[12][13][14][15][16][17] Most scholars agree that Jesus was a Jewish teacher from Galilee in Roman Judaea, was baptized by John the Baptist, and was crucified in Jerusalem on the orders of the Roman Prefect, Pontius Pilate.[8][18][15] However, the quest for the historical Jesus has produced little agreement on the historicity of gospel narratives and their theological assertions of his divinity.[19][20][21][22] Scholars have offered various portraits of Jesus, which at times share a number of overlapping attributes, such as the leader of an apocalyptic movement, Messiah, a charismatic healer, a sage and philosopher, or a social reformer who preached of the "Kingdom of God" as a means for personal and egalitarian social transformation.[23][24][25][26] Scholars have correlated the New Testament accounts with non-Christian historical records to arrive at an estimated chronology of Jesus' life.[3][5][27][28]

Christians hold Jesus to be the awaited Messiah of the Old Testament and refer to him as Jesus Christ or simply as Christ,[29][30] a name that is also used secularly. Most Christians believe that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of a virgin, performed miracles, founded the Church, died sacrificially by crucifixion to achieve atonement, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven, from which he will return.[31] The majority of Christians worship Jesus as the incarnation of God the Son, and the Second Person of the Holy Trinity.[32] A few Christian groups reject Trinitarianism, wholly or partly, as non-scriptural.[32][33]

In Islam, Jesus (commonly transliterated as Isa) is considered one of God's important prophets.[34][35] In Islam, Jesus is a bringer of scripture, and the product of a virgin birth, but not the victim of crucifixion. Judaism rejects the belief that Jesus was the awaited Messiah, arguing that he did not fulfill the Messianic prophecies in the Tanakh.[36] Bahá'í scripture almost never refers to Jesus as the Messiah, but calls him a Manifestation of God.[37]

A tribute for Canadian Soldiers from WW1 till present day conflicts.Boer

I made this video not to glorify war or acts of defense against defiance.

I made it so that my home country of "Canada" ( that has been at the brunt of many a poor joke militarily wise ) can see that I am so very proud of her Canadian military personnel...past and present.

Canadian soldiers do kicks ass.

Winston Churchill once said:

"If I had Canadian Soldiers, American Technology and British Officers, I would rule the world."

I have family and friends past and present that have served in her military, and I'm

proud to be associated with with and everyone of them.

When the diplomatic ways fail and all avenues of a civilized means are done...Canada kicks ass just as well as anyone else
