Canada finishes 2nd in a Parapan Am Games that were about more than medals
Nobody knew what Paralympic sport was.
“Here, after having these Parapan American Games in Toronto, I know that none of our athletes will ever have to put their heads down coming home from competition,” said Dixon, a former Paralympic swimmer and the assistant chef de mission of Canada’s team in Toronto. “They’ll be able to raise their heads up high and be proud of their accomplishments. All of our athletes are being put in a position of being a role model and a hero in our country.
“And that just makes me so proud.”
Canada set a target of finishing top-three in medals at the Parapan American Games, that wrapped up Saturday. Mission accomplished. The team went one better, finishing second with 168 medals — 50 gold, 63 silver and 55 bronze. Brazil finished atop the table with 257 medals (109-74-74), while the United States was third with 135 medals.
But the victory of these Games wasn’t just about medals won, but about the fans won over along the way. The victory was in the jam-packed crowd that watched Canada’s wheelchair rugby team beat the U.S. for gold, and a similarly large and noisy crowd that cheered on Canada’s wheelchair basketball teams, which both came away with silver.
“Who’s to say that a young child living with an impairment hasn’t been inspired by what they’ve seen on TV and decided to take up para-sports?” said Craig Spence, communications director for the International Paralympic Committee. “You’ll see next year in Rio a whole host of young British athletes who were inspired by the 2012 London Paralympic Games, and I think you’ll see a similar situation here, Canadians who’ve been inspired by the performances of Aurelie Rivard will be wanting to compete.
“These Games will leave many legacies, but you don’t judge them by the end of play tonight, but over the next 10 or 15 years.”
These were the largest Parapan Am Games in history, with 1,600 athletes competing.
Canada fielded its largest-ever team of 216 athletes, and the results showed. Among the highlights: Rivard, a 19-year-old from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., won six gold medals in swimming, and set a world record.
There was also triple gold for Brent Lakatos and Alexandre Dupont on the track, and Daniel Chalifour and his guide Alexandre Cloutier in para-cycling.
Canada’s strong showing also included medals in table tennis, judo, sitting volleyball, goalball, wheelchair tennis, para-archery, and boccia.
Rugby, both the men’s and women’s basketball teams, both the men’s and women’s goalball teams, and the women’s sitting volleyball squad secured their tickets to the Rio Paralympics.
“It was a great opportunity to rehearse every aspect of a major international Games, from being on a team with other sports, to living in an athlete village and travelling to completion venues,” said Walker-Young. “This has prepared our athletes to be their best in Rio at the 2016 Paralympic Games.”
Canada’s men’s basketball team capped the competition, losing 62-39 to the United States. The crowd at Ryerson University’s Mattamy Athletic Centre rivalled the crowd that watched Canada’s women win gold a few weeks earlier at the Pan American Games, and was on its feet cheering when Nikola Goncin drained a three-pointer in the dying seconds.
“When everyone’s cheering you when you’re down 30 points. . . this is spectacular,” Goncin said.
Zak Madell, who scored 34 goals in Canada’s 57-54 rugby win over the U.S., was chosen to carry Canada’s flag in the closing ceremonies Saturday night at Nathan Phillips Square.
The 21-year-old from Okotoks, Alta., lingered long on the floor after Friday night’s thrilling victory, signing autographs and posing for pictures. The exposure para-sports have gotten in Toronto, he said, have been “the beauty of these Games.”
“We’re getting the word out, not just to the friends and family who come and support us at all local tournaments, but locals in Toronto who heard about the sport, or saw it on TV and wanted to come see for themselves. I think that exposure is what we’ve been lacking in the past to get new players to come out and give it a shot.”

Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games Praised As The 'Largest, Loudest And Best Ever'
What a night, Toronto!
The 2015 Parapan Am Games and Panamania came to a close on Saturday night at Nathan Phillips Square, after eight days of inspiring sports competition. Thousands filled the square with incredible energy to celebrate the largest Parapan Am Games in history, with 1,600 athletes from 28 countries.
Toronto singer and songwriter Sean Jones opened the ceremony with a stunning rendition of "O Canada."
The crowd then danced and clapped along as Franco-Ontarian urban folk band SWING performed an energetic tribute to the athletes.
The performance was so catchy, in fact, that the athletes couldn’t resist breaking out into a conga line.
Rugby star Zak Madell proudly carried the maple leaf for Team Canada, as flagbearers from each country bid a final farewell in the Parade of Nations. The 21-year-old wheelchair rugby player from Okotoks, Alta., led the Canadian team to a gold-medal victory over the United States on Friday, securing them a spot in the Rio Paralympics next summer.
Toronto2015 CEO Saad Rafi called the Games the "largest, loudest and best Parapan Am Games ever."
"In the past week, we've seen athletes from across the Americas demonstrate incredible courage, strength and athleticism, thrilling and inspiring fans," he said. "Tonight is about celebrating and thanking these athletes, as well as the people of the region who supported these Games, which will leave a legacy of not only sport, but diversity and inclusion, which will be felt for generations to come."
He also thanked the volunteers, who brought their "personality and energy."
Jose Luis Campo, president of the Americas Paralympic Committee, echoed Rafi’s sentiments. "You have raised the bar for future organizers, and I have to say these have been the best Parapan American Games ever," he said.
To the athletes, Campo added: "You have entertained us with your high level performances, and shown that life is about maximizing ability and not perceived disability," he said.
The Americas Paralympic Committee flag was then lowered, and Toronto Mayor John Tory passed it over to Luis Castañeda Lossio, mayor of Lima, Peru, the host city of the 2019 event.
Spoken word artist Mustafa the Poet extinguished the Parapan Am flame with a powerful poem, officially bringing the Games to a close.
Later in the evening, Meghan Patrick, an up-and-coming country singer from Bowmanville, Ont. took the stage and pumped up the crowd before being followed by Grammy award-winning superstar, Wyclef Jean.
Jean returned to Nathan Phillips Square after opening Panamania last month. He got the crowd dancing, jumping and singing along to hits including Bob Marley's classic "No Woman, No Cry," Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie," and his own "Sweetest Girl."
The ceremony finished with a bang as fireworks lit up the square over Toronto City Hall. As the crowd oohed and aahed, Serena Ryder's "Together We Are One" played in the background, the official song of the Toronto 2015 Pan/Para Am Games.
A big congratulations to all of the athletes, and of course, to Toronto for hosting a memorable Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

HOTEL CALIFORNIA-
1976- BEST QUOTE OF OUR 60s and early 70s- Lost soul, high, in desert of lost hope, is
spiritually dying, but sees a hotel, like a mission church, with a beautiful
woman, death, inviting him inside to rest. Heaven or Hell, guided by
Death, he hears other residents welcoming him to their lost world.
California or californication is often a symbol for a lost cursed land of
plenty but wasted, in its ruined beauty it seduces lost souls to their ruin.
Lady Death has all the riches of Benzs and her vapid pretty boys, empty
of feelings, the "guests" dance in the heat of Hell. The
wine/spirit of 1969 is gone, the idealism of the Sixties, abandoned to empty
pleasures that need excuses to tolerate. The room is copy of brothel with
champagne riches. The people there put themselves there via empty chases
after sensation and that lure keeps them chasing. They try to eat and
kill their sins, but The Beast, Satan, can not be killed. Escape
is impossible. You can check out, die, anytime but can never escape your
wasted life.

Written by Don Felder, Glenn Frey and
Don Henley, this song is about materialism and excess. California is used as
the setting, but it could relate to anywhere in America. Don Henley in the
London Daily Mail November 9, 2007 said: "Some of the
wilder interpretations of that song have been amazing. It was really about the
excesses of American culture and certain girls we knew. But it was also about
the uneasy balance between art and commerce."
On November 25, 2007 Henley appeared on the TV news show 60 Minutes, where he was told, "everyone wants to know what this song means." Henley replied: "I know, it's so boring. It's a song about the dark underbelly of the American Dream, and about excess in America which was something we knew about."
He offered yet another interpretation in the 2013 History of the Eaglesdocumentary: "It's a song about a journey from innocence to experience."

Parapan Am Games Another Big Win for Ontario
Team Canada’s Record Results Top Off Parapan Am/Pan Am Success
August 17, 2015 9:00 A.M.
Athletes from Ontario and across Canada have
delivered exceptional performances to crown the largest, most successful
Parapan Am Games ever.Team Canada won a record 168 medals at the TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games. Ontario athletes made a major contribution to this showing, with 63 medals, and helped Canada finish second overall. This outstanding achievement capped off an incredible summer for Ontario that began with the resounding success of the Pan Am Games.
The Parapan Am Games were also a success in many other ways:
·
More than 90,000 tickets were sold for the 445 events in 15
sports -- the most events ever at a Parapan Am Games. Events were held in 11
venues across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
·
These were the most accessible Parapan Am
Games ever, leaving a legacy of inclusion that Ontarians and visitors of
all abilities will continue to benefit from.
·
A record 2,600 athletes and officials from 28 countries and
territories participated in the Parapan Am Games.
·
This year, the Parapan Am Games were televised live in Canada
for the first time, raising the profile of parasports and athletes with
disabilities. More than five million Canadians tuned in to TV coverage on CBC
and Radio-Canada.
·
More than 1.4 million people attended Parapan Am and Pan Am
celebrations at seven sites, including PANAMANIA Live at Nathan Phillips Square
and Ontario's Celebration Zone. Ontario's Celebration Zone hosted more than 500
performances and presentations over 38 days, including live music and culinary
showcases -- and Ontario's first accessible zip line.
·
Over 23,000 volunteers welcomed visitors from around the world
to the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games.
·
Ontario showcased itself to an international audience at the
Parapan Am Games, adding to the exposure it enjoyed in July through the highly successful Pan Am
Games. In total, the Games are expected to create 26,000 jobs and
boost Ontario's real GDP by $3.7 billion from 2009 to 2017.
The Games will leave behind a legacy that
will enrich Ontario for decades. For example, work will begin in September to
transform the highly successful Athletes' Village into the Canary District. It
will include a range of housing options, including accessible and affordable
units, and has transformed a former brownfield site into a vibrant and diverse
new Toronto neighbourhood that people will move into beginning next spring. As
well, the new and renovated sport and recreation venues built or upgraded for
the Games will serve as sites for training and competition, home bases for
national and provincial sports organizations, and world-class facilities for
community and public use.Supporting the success of the 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games is part of the government's plan to build Ontario up. The four-part plan is investing in people's talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario's history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement savings plan.
Quick Facts
·
Of the 216 Parapan Am athletes and guides on Team Canada, 74 (or
34 per cent) were from Ontario.
·
Team Canada won 50 gold, 63 silver and 55 bronze medals at the
TORONTO 2015 Parapan Am Games. This compares with 13 gold, 22 silver and 28
bronze at the 2011 Parapan Am Games in Guadalajara.
·
Ontario athletes won 14 gold, 23 silver and 26 bronze medals for
Team Canada.
·
All 15 sports this year were qualifiers for the 2016 Paralympic
Games in Rio de Janeiro.
·
Quest for Gold has provided
Ontario athletes and coaches with more than $90 million in support since the
program began in 2006. More than $26 million was provided in 2014–15 to promote
participation and excellence in sport across Ontario.
·
More than 1.1 million tickets were sold in total for the TORONTO
2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games.
