28 Things Americans Should Know A Boot Canadians

We all know the world is ending (Editor note: huh?), but what do we know about Canada? Is it a City? Does it fold laundry? Who knows. But what we do know is that people live there. Not many, but there are some.

Former ABC news anchor Peter Jennings once said "Canadians have an abiding interest in surprising those Americans who have historically made little effort to learn about their neighbor to the North."  Whatever that means - it sounds smart and deserves our attention.

So let's hop to it! It's A BOOT time to get to know your northern neighbors a little better. Mad Cow Club brings you the big list of Canadian likes and dislikes.

THERE ARE 15 THINGS YOUR NEIGHBORS LIKE:

1) BEER

Canadians favor beer (51%) over all other alcoholic beverages (49%).

2) WEED

According to a 2007 World Drug Report by the UN, Canada smokes 4 times the world average.

3) TIM HORTON'S

Known for it's coffee and doughnuts, Tim Horton's overtook McDonald's as Canada's largest food service operator.

4) HOCKEY

Normally, when airlines announce the start of boarding, passengers eagerly line up to claim their seats.
But on Feb. 28, 2010, the passengers for Air Canada Flight 112 refused to get on the plane.  They were watching a hockey game.  This kind of passion (obsession) is uniquely Canadian.

5) POLITENESS

Everyone knows this.

6) FLAVORED POTATO CHIPS

Canadians love their unique flavored potato chips like dill pickle, ketchup, all dressed, poutine & sour cream and onion!  Most Canadians are actually unaware that other countries do not carry these flavors.

7) PUBLIC HEALTH CARE

While many politicians in the US may try to convince you that Canadians dislike their healthcare system, studies have found that a whopping 89.9% of Canadians like their universal public healthcare system.

8) COINS

Just over 25 years ago, Canada killed it's one dollar note. In it's place came a large golden coin called "The Loonie".  Shortly after "The Toonie" was introduced, replacing the two dollar note.

9) THE IPHONE

Canada has the highest adoption rate for iPhones in the world.

10) THE METRIC SYSTEM

While most Canadians live in cities, they love their outdoor activities all year round.

12) IMMIGRATION

Canada accepts twice the amount of immigrants as their US counterparts.

13) COMEDY

Canadians have a sense of humor that we can all enjoy.  Some of our favorite comedians came from Canada.  Chris Farley, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, Howie Mandel, Dan Aykroyd, Tom Green, Norm MacDonald, Ryan Reynolds, John Candy, Michael J. Fox, Seth Rogen & Martin Short just to name a few.

14) ROCKY MOUNTAIN BEAR F#*KERS

15) NICKNAMES

Canadians like nicknaming their cities and citizens.  Our favorite - "Cod Choker" and "Tijuana North".

THERE ARE 13 THINGS YOUR NEIGHBORS DO NOT LIKE:

1) BEING ASKED IF THEY ARE AMERICAN

Ask a person you know to be Canadian if they are American and you'll hear (pffff). Canadians think Americans are arrogant and self-absorbed which is one of the reasons they bring the Canadian flag with them on vacations. They don't want to be mistaken for an American tourist.

2) EH & ABOOT

Imagine if every Canadian thought Americans talked like they do in movies.

"Ya'll going to the county fair?"
"Ya'll comin' ta eat at Mack-Donald's?"
"Golly gee Lucy Mae, New York City sure is mighty big!"

The fact is, most Canadians don't say "Eh" or pronounce words using a "raised dialect", such as "a boot".  Sure there are some on the east coast and around the great lakes, but the vast majority of Canadians live life "eh" free.

3) MINUS 30 CELSIUS (-22 FAHRENHEIT)

Canada has four distinct seasons and Canadians are completely immune to all of the weather conditions they bring; however, Canadians tough exteriors begin to crack a little when the thermometer dips below -30 Celcius (-22 Fahrenheit). They still get in their cars (or on their bicycles) and go to work in the morning, but they don't enjoy it as much.

4) POTHOLES

The constant freezing and thawing of ice on the roads creates terrible potholes every spring.  Ask any Canadian about potholes and they'll say "THE GOVERNMENT!".

5) CELLULAR CARRIERS

Canadians pay the highest rates in the developed world for voice and data service.

6) AMERICAN BEER

Do you remember when Canada politely declined the two cases of beer sent from the White House after the United States lost both men’s and women’s hockey games to Canada at Sochi 2014?

Canada's ambassador to Washington stated "I thought we were getting beer. We had no idea what to do with this mishmash of boiled homegrown honey".

7) JUSTIN BEIBER

Canada's response to the 100,000 people who signed a petition to deport Justin Beiber?  "You broke him, you bought him".

Canada doesnt want justin beiber

8) IMPOLITENESS

In Canada it is rare to be given a direct order from anyone, even from an employer.

RUDE:

"Bring me that hammer"
"John, come here"
"show me your ticket"
"stand up"

NOT RUDE:

"Could you bring me that hammer please?"
"Hey John, can I borrow you for a minute?"
"May I see your ticket?"
"Sorry, people are not allowed to sit on the floor here"

canada polite impolite

9) THE USAGE OF "AMERICA"

American is derived from America, a term originally denoting all of the New World including the land where Canada (and Latin America) sits. It's usage by the US over time changed the meaning to denote things specifically from the United States of America.  This bothers some Canadians, but not all.
canada is part of america

10) THE PENNY

By 2012, Canadians were throwing out their pennies at such an alarming rate, the Canadian Finance Minister decided to rid citizens of the menace altogether. Not a soul stood up to defend the poor penny and it was gone in a matter of months.

Canada no more penny

11) DUMB QUESTIONS

Do you know Greg?
Do you live in igloos?
Does Canada have high-speed internet?
Is Toronto the capitol of Canada?
canada ignorant questions

12) NO DEBT

Canada dislikes having "no debt" (double negative).  As a whole, Canadians didn't learn anything from the crash of 2008.   Not only do Canadians have one of the lowest household savings rate in the developed world (3%), but they have the highest debt to income ratio in the world as well.

13) PROVINCIAL TAXES

With the exception of Alberta, each Province has additional taxes beyond the 5% national sales tax. These extra taxes differ from Province to Province and are not added into the price of goods and services until you're at the checkout.  Sounds like a pain in the butt.
