Anti-rape culture rally planned at Saint Mar y’s

A rally opposing rape culture on university campuses will be held Thursday afternoon at Saint Mary’s.

The university has been in the news since frosh leaders were filmed last week teaching firstyear students a chant about sexually assaulting underage girls.

The Saint Mary’s Women’s Centre is organizing the rally, which will be held at 2:30 p.m. outside the Atrium .

“We recognize that this culture is not created by or limited to Saint Mary’s University but is prevalent throughout society," a release from the women’s centre reads. “The chants captured on video are a symptom o f a wider culture that minimizes sexual violence, shames and blames rape victims and victims of assault, and promotes the normalization of rape."

According to the release, a community support and debriefing event will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Local Women’s Council House at the corner of Young and Inglis streets.

GET THE POINT- IT'S LIKE CHER SAYS  2 question r u a feminist still??

Cher on the art of the comeback

A conversation with Cher on working with Lady Gaga and singing for Jackie O

by Elio Iannacci on Sunday, September 8, 2013 8:00pm

Q: So many young performers like Taylor Swift don’t want to identify as feminists. Why is that?

A: What is the bad connotation with feminism? When women have full control of their bodies, when women get paid exactly the same as men, when everything that happens for men happens for women, I can stop calling myself a feminist.

AND..

READER’S CORNER

‘How many of you are feminists?’

I remember being in high school in Mr. Plato’s Global History class when he point-blank asked the students: “How many of you are feminists?"

Only about three of us raised our hands. Plato told them all they were doorknobs (or something to that effect, lovingly) and explained that feminism is the basic b elief in equality, something the other kids had never considered before.

Kids aren’t taught about feminism — not what it actually is, anyway. They close their eyes and imagine feminists as fat lesbians, frothing at the mouth and hating men while they stuff their faces with three-day-old tuna casserole.

They don’t think of their mothers, struggling to make the same pay as the men at work. They don’t see their older sisters dealing with misogyny each and every day as a university student. They don’t see their neighbour being raped, their best friend b eing turned down for jobs, or their grandmother being forced to stay home because that was her “place."

Kids need to know what feminism is, because feminism is how we’re all going to make our world a better place. Making each group equal is how we move beyond issues like what’s happening in our university system, in or our political system, in or our workplaces and in our schools.

You have to teach people when they are young that all people deserve equal respect, or else you’ll lose them. Why are kids in their first year of university so quick to accept a sexist chant? Because they don’t know any better, and that’s our fault.

We have to do better for the girls and the boys, or else the next generation will lose something that’s been essential in shaping the current generation: the ongoing fight for gender equality.

Soccer coach guilty of sex assault

STEVE BRUCE COURT REPORTER

sbr uce@herald.ca @CH_cour ts

A Halifax soccer coach has pleaded guilty to s exually assau lting one of his players, a 14-year-old girl, last fall.

Konstanty (Kostek) Bedoa-Gorski, 24, entered the plea Tuesday in Halifax provincial court.

Bedoa-Gorski, a psychology student at Saint Mary’s University, will be sentenced Dec. 18.

Judge Michael Sherar ordered the young man to co-operate with the preparation of a presentence report.

Defence lawyer Thomas Singleton told the court the sentencing date would allow his client to finish this semester at SMU.

But the south-end Halifax university announced later Tuesday that Bedoa-Gorski had been suspended and barred from campus.

A dis ciplinary hearing will b e held as soon as possible, a university spokesman said.

SMU was in the national headlines last week for a frosh week chant encouraging the rape of underage girls.

Bedoa-Gorski abused the girl last October.

He was also charged with sexual interference. That charge will be withdrawn after he is sentenced for sexual assault.

Bedoa-Gorski remains free on an under taking , with conditions banning him from using the Internet, having contact with children under the age of 16 and going to schools, parks, playgrounds and other places known to be frequented by kids.

He’s forbidden from communicating with the victim or going to her home. The girl’s identity is protected by a publication ban.

Bedoa-Gorski was director of MAPS Elite, a Halifax-based program for high-performance soccer players between the ages of 12 and 16 .

He’s also coached in Soccer Nova Scotia’s provincial program, at the Farias Soccer Academy and with clubs such as Cole Harbour, Dartmouth United, Halifax Dunbrack and Dartmouth FC.

 The Wolves

The Gray Wolf (Canis lupus; also spelled Grey Wolf, see spelling differences; also known as Timber Wolf or Wolf) is a mammal in the order Carnivora. The Gray Wolf shares a common ancestry with the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris), as evidenced by DNA sequencing and genetic drift studies. Gray wolves were once abundant and distributed over much of North America, Eurasia, and the Middle East. Today, for a variety of human-related reasons, including widespread habitat destruction and excessive hunting, wolves inhabit only a very limited portion of their former range. Though listed as a species of least concern for extinction worldwide, for some regions including the Continental United States, the species is listed as endangered or threatened.

Tenancy rules eased for abuse victims

September 11, 2013 - 7:20pm By THE CHRONICLE HERALD
Nova Scotia is making it easier for abuse victims to get out of leases early without financial penalties.

“The worry about a lease could prevent someone from leaving a dangerous situation,” John Joyce-Robinson, the justice department’s director of victim services, said Wednesday in a news release.

Through changes to the Residential Tenancies Act, victims can now work with victim services to end year-to-year leases with one month’s notice instead of three months and end fixed-term leases before the stated end date.

Tenants who would previously had to pay the rent for the rest of the lease can now apply to have the financial responsibility reduced.

For more information, call victim services at 1-888-470-0773.

Frosh chant response group set

Five women, three men on Saint Mary’s panel established by university president

EDUCATION REPORTER FRANCES WILLICK fwillick@herald.ca @CH_Frances

Saint Mary’s University announced Wednesday the members of a new group tasked with helping prevent sexual assault on campus.

Led by Dalhousie University law professor Wayne MacKay, the membership will include Laurel Broten, the creator of Ontario’s Sexual Violence Action Plan; Shelagh Crooks, a philosophy professor at Saint Mary’s; lawyer and writer Wendy MacGregor; Marilyn More, the minister resp onsible for the Advis ory Council of the Status of Women Act; Brad Prest, a fourth-year political science student; Staci Simpson, a graduate student and the coordinator of the Saint Mary’s women’s centre; and Russell Westhaver, a sociology and criminology professor at Saint Mary’s.

Maureen Reid of BoardWorks Consulting will serve as an administrator and resource consultant for the group.

Colin Dodds, the president of Saint Mary’s, struck the presidential council last week in the wake of a pro-rape cheer sung on campus during frosh week.

“We have assembled a team of five women and three men that bring a wide range of perspectives to the issue," Dodds said in a news release. “They will be drawing on the best resources and expertise from both the campus and the community."

The group will also look at ways of increasing respect and safety on campus.

Saint Mary’s spokesman Steve Proctor said external organizations will have an opportunity to give input, but he’s uncertain how it will be solicited or collected.

“There are any number of people who have great resources that we will b e tapping into in the process," he said.

The bu dget for the council has not yet been set. MacKay told The Chronicle Herald last week that his role as leader is a volunteer p osition .

The council’s recommendations are expected in mid-December.

Two students are facing a disciplinary hearing in connection with the orientation week chant.

Another student, 24-year-old Konstanty (Kostek) Bedoa-Gorski, was suspended and will also face a dis ciplinary hearing after pleading guilty on Tuesday to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl whom he coached in soccer.

Proctor said neither the dates nor outcomes o f dis ciplinary hearings are made public.

Program to target sexualized violence

AARON BESWICK TRURO BUREAU

abeswick@herald.ca @CH_ABeswick

ANTIGONISH — It took three years of hundreds of Saint Mary’s University students chanting about sexually assaulting underage girls for anyone to complain, or if s omeone did, for s omeone to listen .

It took widespread outrage in the media for the administration and stu dent council, the president of which admitted to participating in the chant, to respond last week.

And that’s a problem for Lucille Harper, Annie Chau and the 80 stu dent and academic leaders coming to Antigonish on Friday to learn how to b e the individual that resists this type of herd mentality.

“When you look at the (Saint Mary’s University) frosh leader saying that (students) didn’t even think about the words they were chanting, you see how pervasive sexualized violence is in our culture," said Harper, executive director of the Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre & Sexual Assault Services Association.

This weekend, stu dent and academic leaders from around Atlantic Canada will come to St. Francis Xavier University to take instru ction on how to identify sexualized violence and its promotion and how to intervene in a program hosted by the Women’s Resource Centre. Those 80 will be sent back to their campuses as instructors of a program called Bringing in the Bystander, in the hopes of creating a broader culture of whistle-blowers.

“We all want to live in a safe, happy community where p eople are treated with respect," said Chau, program co-ordinator at the women’s centre.

“Everyone in the community is responsible for that."

The bystander approach was developed at the University of New Hampshire as a means to reining in the excess es on campus that promote sexual violence.

Angela Borges, a lead trainer in prevention innovation at that university, will be in Antigonish on Friday to teach the course.

“When you look at movies, music and television you s ee a lot of themes around sexual violence and rape that trivialize it in some way," said Borges on Monday.

“So much so that people take it as normal. Our program asks people to look at that, whether it be in the broader media or people making jokes, and stand up against it."

During the program, participants practise intervening in situations, whether it be an intoxicated girl being dragged off from the bar or a chant such as the one at Saint Mary’s University that promotes rape.

It is about the individual standing up against a massive media machine that promotes extreme sexuality and often trivializes sexual violence, said Borges.

She admitted that those are big forces for the individual to oppose.

“But it is encouraging to see that now we are starting to recognize the problem and seeking solutions to do something about it ."

Racy beer mug noticed by university dean

The dean o f engineering for Memorial University of Newfoundland says there will be consequences for a sexualized beer mug that has prompted the school’s engineering society to apologize.

Greg Naterer says he’s disturbed by the mugs selected by the society for a recent party.

The souvenir mugs feature a cartoon image of a barely dressed woman and the words “If She’s Thirsty Give her the D (DAY)," a play on the party’s D-Day theme and a reference to a phrase that has its origins from a pornography website and its us e in standup comedy. (CP)

Cenovus to give priority to veterans

One of Canada’s energy giants has joined a program that makes military veterans a priority when hiring new employees.

Federal Veterans Affairs Minister Julian Fantino was in Calgary for the announcement by Cenovus Energy, which has a workforce of about 5,000.

Fantino said Cenovus is the first energy and utility company to participate in the program announced last fall as part of a government veterans transition plan.

He said many Canadian soldiers leaving the military have useful skills, including the ability to work as part of a team. (CP)
