International Literacy Day

Every year International Literacy Day is celebrated on September 8th with one goal in mind: to raise awareness about the importance of literacy and adult learning around the world. Literacy is a human right and the foundation of all learning.

The theme of International Literacy Day 2013 is Literacies for the 21st Century

Literacy is a basic right and an essential motor for human development. It paves the way to autonomy, the acquisition of skills, cultural expression and full participation in society.

Literacy in the world has improved over the two decades, thanks to international efforts and work towards the Millennium Development Goals. Today, 84% of the world’s population can read and write, compared to 76% in 1990. In 20 years, the illiterate population has been reduced by more than 100 million people.

This is still not enough. There are still serious inequalities. Two thirds of the 774 million illiterate adults in the world are women. Most of the children and young people who do not go to school are girls. Fifty-seven million primary school-age children and 69 million secondary school-age children do not have the opportunity to attend. Children lucky enough to go to school do not always leave being able to read and write. Even in economically developed countries, the proportion of the population lacking basic reading and writing skills is too high. This is a serious obstacle to individual fulfillment, to the development of societies and to mutual understanding between peoples.

This situation is exacerbated by the rise of new technologies and modern knowledge societies that make the ability to read and write all the more essential. Literacy is the first condition for dialogue, communication and integration into new connected societies. Young people need new skills to enter and succeed in the job market: knowledge of several languages, understanding of cultural diversity, lifelong learning. Literacy is the key for acquiring knowledge, interpersonal skills, expertise and the ability to live together in community — all skills that are the foundations of modern society. In the twenty-first century, more than ever before, literacy is the cornerstone of peace and development.

Literacy is much more than an educational priority — it is the ultimate investment in the future and the first step towards all the new forms of literacy required in the twenty-first century. We wish to see a century where every child is able to read and to use this skill to gain autonomy. On this International Literacy Day, we call on governments to work together to achieve this dream. This requires new funding, policies drawn up with the populations concerned, new and more innovative forms of action, taking full advantage of new technologies. The progress made in recent years shows that this is possible, and UNESCO is committed to doing all that it can to make it happen.

Yolanda moved from Digby to Kentville to attend the 2 year Business Administration program at the Kingstec Campus and she is exploring the opportunity to extend her education further by continuing at Acadia University to complete a Bachelor’s degree in finance.

She has good planning and time management skills and a great dedication to working hard to provide a better future for her son and herself.” The instructor went on to say, “Yolanda has found self-worth and esteem through education. Improving her essential skills has improved her self esteem. I believe her actions of life-long learning and her belief in education and hard work as the route to success will also transfer to the next generation. I am sure Yolanda will continue to succeed.”

“I look forward to continuing my education. I would love to have the opportunity to speak to others who have the dream of obtaining an education. With motivation and determination, I believe we can all achieve our goals and dreams.”

The faculty is great, the friends I made will last my lifetime, and the confidence they give me by encouraging me to continue is amazing.”

Michelle is described by her instructors as focused, pleasant, determined, and hardworking with a zest for life. “There are many things that set Michelle apart from other students such as her persevering attitude as well as her contagious positive spirit.” Another noted, “She holds down a number of part-time jobs to make ends meet, raises a son on her own, and still does very well in school. The determination she shows is above what I have experienced from most people. She has inspired new learners and her fellow classmates to begin and to continue their own learning journeys.” They added, “Her ability to inspire only begins in the class. As a mother, she has become a role model for her two children and has provided her extended family such joy.

“With the help of the amazing people I’ve met on this journey, I’ve been able to convert the negative impression I once had for the educational system into reachable goals. This in turn will allow me to show myself and my family that there are no boundaries.”

Tatiana Poltavets – $500 Bursary Recipient
Tatiana Poltavets

Tatiana is attending the Adult Learning Program at the Cumberland Campus and plans to graduate in June 2013. Leaving high school when she did was a difficult choice for Tatiana. Now she is extremely pleased to have been given the opportunity to complete her grade 12 and to work at the same time. Tatiana has already applied to the Construction Electrician program at NSCC for September 2013.

Tatiana’s instructors highly recommended her for the bursary. “Tatiana is consistent and reliable; she works diligently in each class. She is a pleasure to have as a student and I have enjoyed seeing her confidence grow as she works towards achieving her goal of completing grade 12.” Another instructor noted, “Tatiana is an excellent example of a dedicated life-long learner and I know she will continue to embrace any opportunities that present themselves.”

GLOBAL GIRL POWER

Sisters from Kabul

hangama Hangama Amiri art- Afghanistan- Freedom- Freedom - brilliant

Born in Kabul, Fazila and Hangama Amari  and their family fled Afghanistan in 1996 with the arrival of the Taliban, going first to Pakistan, then to Iran, then to Tajikistan, and finally arriving in Canada in 2005.

Both sisters are now studying at NSCAD University. But while they’ve adjusted to life in Canada, they can’t forget the troubled homeland they left behind.

As an artist, Fazila Amiri’s films look at the consequences for human rights in Afghanistan and Canada's role there. She is currently developing her first feature film to be shot in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Born in Kabul in 1988, Fazila is finishing her undergraduate degree, majoring in film, at NSCAD University. Her first short film Paaizeb was screened at the 41st Montreal World Film Festival, and Gerreh, her thesis film, just screened at the Atlantic Film Festival.

Gerreh—a Persian word for “tying the knot"—will also show next month at the Autumn Human Rights Film Festival  in Kabul and at Communications Nova Scotia’s Diversity Film Festival at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

The 16-minute film tells the fictional story of an immigrant Afghan bride who experiments with democracy in her new multicultural Canadian land. Shot last winter with a nonprofessional cast, the film was funded by Film Nova Scotia.

“Through cinema, I can express my experiences, the things I have seen,” says Fazila, 23. “By making films, it’s helped me to understand what my voice is as an artist. I’m so grateful for the support and understanding of my professors.”

Fazila’s younger sister Hangama, a painter, is also bringing her art before an audience:  the exhibition The Wind-Up Dolls opened at the Anna Leonowens Gallery on Monday, Sept. 27. It consists of a series of portraits of six Afghan women, whom she met on a visit to her native Kabul last year.

“When you’ve been raised in four countries, you get a bit of conflicted identity,” explains Hangama, 22. “And I find myself thinking back to where I came from and what I would be like if I stayed. These women who I met have lived under oppression and in a male-dominated society ...  I feel as an artist I can bring their stories alive.”

Presented with the Lieutenant Governor’s Community Volunteerism Medal at the President’s Convocation on Wednesday, Sept. 21, Hangama says she expresses her appreciation for her life in Canada by volunteering. But like her sister, she is drawn again and again to where she comes from.

“Canada gives me the luxury to focus on my education and to find my voice as an artist,” she says. “I will always be so grateful for that.”

Confronting the male gaze

November 16, 2012
.

Opening night of Passion for Freedom at Unit 24 Gallery in London, England. Hangama Amiri's painting Raining Stones can be seen next to the window.

From the glamour of London, England to the tranquility of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Hangama Amiri is excited about where her art is taking her.

Just graduated from NSCAD University in the spring, the young Canadian uses her art to speak for the women of her native land, Afghanistan.

“I see myself as creating activist artwork to challenge and to change and to bring hope for the women of Afghanistan,” says Hangama, 23, just back from the U.K. and en route to Lunenburg, where she is one of three NSCAD grads with the NSCAD-Lunenburg Community Studio Residency Program.

Hangama was in London to attend the opening of the Passion for Freedom Festival exhibition at Unit 24 Gallery, next to the Tate Modern. Two of her paintings from the Wind-up Dolls Series, which debuted at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in the fall of 2011, were accepted to the prestigious exhibition.

“When I applied, I got a reply from the curator of the show that same day,” says Hangama. “I was quite surprised.”

Born in Kabul, she and her family fled Afghanistan with the arrival of the Taliban in 1996, making their way to Canada in 2005. The Wind-Up Dolls series was inspired by a 2010 trip back to the city of her childhood and the women she met there. The painting Raining Stones shows a naked woman, her head bowed and her long hair obscuring her face, in the centre of the canvas, as rocks drop down around her. The painting refers to the fact women accused of committing adultery are still subject to being publicly stoned in Afghanistan’s tribal villages.

The second painting shows a young woman with fire obliterating her eye, holding a book in one hand and a Burqa in the other.  Despite the flames—the intimidation, the danger—her gaze is fierce and defiant.

Hangama Amiri's second painting at the exhibition shows a young girl with fire over her eye.

“When the Taliban lost control of the country in 2001 there was great hope for girls, that they would be able to go to school. But it isn’t safe. So many girls have had acid thrown into their face.”

Her work got a lot of attention in London; she was interviewed on the BBC and a columnist in The Spectator singled out her two paintings for special mention in his review. “When you look at them, you cannot help but know that the artist understands the plight of women facing one of the most murderously misogynistic forces on the planet,” writes Nick Cohen, “and perhaps feel the need to offer her solidarity overwhelming all other emotions.”

Hangama was back in Kabul recently, in the company of her sister Fazila, a NSCAD film grad who was scouting locations for her first feature. The sisters collaborated on Domes of Secret Desires, a series of six videos. In each sequence, a woman (Hangama) wearing a blue Burqa would perform such taboo activites as putting on lipstick, walking in high heels and smoking hookah. “These performances are the conceptual portraits for women who have been target of moral behavioral codes imposed on them by men in religiously standardized societies,” explains Hangama.

As well, Hangama started work on a series of paintings and projections which will explore the male gaze in Afghanistan. She plans to build on them once back in the Lunenburg studio.

“In today’s Afghan society, Afghan women live in a sexually objectifying environment; they are harassed and called names and stared at by men,” says Hangama. “If you walk outside (in Kabul) covered from head to toe, you are still harassed … there is no way of escaping the male gaze.”

Video still from The Male Gaze project in development.

AND HERE IS ANOTHER KIND OF CHILD RAPE-  Muslim Heretic Jihadists- raping and stealing the minds of little Muslim girls who just want the dignity and freedom to go to school...Global Girl Power Rising...

Two paintings from the series

“The Wind-Up Dolls” by AMIRI HAGAMA portrays the contemporary Afghan women whom the artist
met upon visit to her home city, Kabul in 2010. ‘These paintings give a social dimension portraying
the innermost thought and feelings of contemporary Afghan women.’ – says Hangama Amiri
(Canada).

4rd Passion for Freedom Festival 2012

Censored works shown for the first time in the City of Freedom -- London.

Passion for Freedom asked artists to respond to these three questions:

1. What is freedom?

2. How easy is it to lose it?

3. How hard is it to get it back?

The "Passion For Freedom" Exhibition this year consisted of 40 artists from 20 countries from all over the world. They came from Canada, USA, Poland, the Netherlands, Afghanistan, Iran and from all over the UK. Some of the works have never been shown before due to art galleries fear of consequences. 5 of the artists exhibited their work under changed names. Although anonymous they attended the private view but asked photos or videos in which they appear not to be published.

Freedom is like air -- you don't see it, you don't appreciate it until you start to lose it.

Malala awarded 2013 Children's Peace Prize
 Agence France-Presse
 Posted at 08/27/2013 9:54 PM | Updated as of 08/27/2013 9:54 PM

THE HAGUE - Teenage activist Malala Yousafzai, shot in the head by a Taliban militant last October after campaigning for girls' right to education, has won the prestigious International Children's Peace Prize, KidsRights announced Tuesday.

The Pakistani 16-year-old will receive the award from 2011 Nobel Peace Prize winner and women's rights campaigner Tawakkol Karman at a glittering ceremony in The Hague on September 6, the Amsterdam-based organisation said.

Malala "risked her life in the fight for access to education for girls all over the world," KidsRights said in a statement.

"By awarding the 2013 International Children's Peace Prize... KidsRights shines the spotlight on a brave and talented child who has demonstrated special dedication to children's rights," it added.

The passionate advocate for girls education was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman while on a school bus near her home in Pakistan's Swat Valley last year.

She was given life-saving treatment in Britain where she now lives, but the attack galvanised her campaign for greater educational opportunities for girls.

Malala's brave fight back from her injuries and her speech at the United Nations in July have made her a leading contender for this year's Nobel Peace Prize.

But the response to her in Pakistan has been mixed, with many hailing her as a national heroine while others have criticised her for promoting a "Western" agenda.

The International Children's Peace Prize, an initiative of the Dutch-based KidsRights Foundation, was launched in 2005 by former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, when he chaired the Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Rome.

It carries a cash value of 100,000 euros ($133,000) that is invested in projects relating to the winner's cause.

Last year's winner was 13-year-old Cris "Kesz" Valdez for his work with Filipino street children while he himself was destitute.

Cris received the prize from South African peace icon and Nobel Peace laureate Desmond Tutu, who is the award's patron.

We actually have no idea how many men and women are suffering from PTSD. It is such a serious Topic that television programs like Bones and CSI NY have had episodes with PTSD as their theme.

During the Cold war before Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan. We had men and women experiencing first hand Disasters and things that that no one needs in their young lives. I go back in my personal memory to another air crash in Quebec. 1963 TCA crashed 4 minutes after takeoff killing all on board 111 Passengers and 7 crew. Highway 101 walker will be missed

Anthoney Wheeler’s bright smile will be missed.

Vince Gill - Go Rest High On That Mountain

Anyone who drives the 101 between New Minas and Coldbrook has probably passed the Nordic walker devotee, known as the “ski pole walker” and the “TAN walking man.” Wheeler died Sept. 11 at the age of 69. He had a heart attack the week before.

In an interview last October, Wheeler said his walking started out of concern for his health. Weighing in at 329 pounds in 1995, he had stomach-stapling surgery done. The follow-up prescription was 30 minutes of exercise a day. Wheeler changed his habits, walked on treadmills and went to the gym.

About 11 years ago, he started his highway treks.  “I do about 70 miles a week,” he said. “My wife treats me like an old dog: she takes me out to Coldbrook and drops me off and I walk home. On the weekends, I like to leave (New Minas) and walk to Frenchys.”

He had a large local following, including a Facebook group, Have you seen the Ski Pole Walking Man?, with 686 members. An online petition to name the stretch of highway he walked on in his honour was nearing 750 signatures Sept. 13.

Wheeler was chosen to lead walkers at the 2012 Valley Harvest Marathon.

Wheeler was also known for the vest advertising Tan Coffee that he sported on his daily treks.

“Anthoney Wheeler is a friend and strong supporter of T.A.N. Coffee. He stopped in our Coldbrook cafe every day for the last five years,” Lay Yong Tan said Friday.

“When we started TAN coffee, (partner Keeping Lau) approached Anthoney,” Tan said. “We made the banner and then we let him wear it. We asked him if he needed anything in return, he said he just needed a spot to catch few breaths and a cup of coffee.”

Wheeler became part of the T.A.N. team, he added.

“He knew we were starting out and he knew it was hard to start a business. He was kind and generous to help us out.”  Tan said he talked to Wheeler a few times a week.

“I talked to him just last week – maybe a few days before his heart attack,” Tan said. “Everyone liked him and get a charge out of his big smile.  “I’ll miss him.”

STEPPING UP 4 THE HOMELESS IN KENTVILLE AND AREA- NOVA SCOTIA CANADA

‘Open Arms’ in the Valley

-

Resource Centre caring for people in need

Two guys with a vision — John and a friend, Andy, — were seminary students at Acadia’s Divinity College where they saw that there were many people out there who needed help. The messages were not getting out, services were great but people needed help getting treatment, finding resources and overcoming obstacles.

In January 2004 a place called “Open Arms” began. John Andrew, a pastor and the managing director, explained that it was intended as a community chaplaincy only, and Open Arms began serving people in immediate crisis here in the Annapolis valley. In response to the most pressing needs they encountered, they began a year round shelter program, and now they have entered into their third year coordinating the seasonal (from Nov. 1 to Apr. 30) ‘Inn From the Cold’ program.

The emergency shelter program has been host to an average of two people per night. More than 140 volunteers, mostly from churches, make the program possible.

In January 2009 they originated the ‘Rural Families in Immediate Distress Assistance Program” to get food to people unable to access area food banks in Eastern Kings County. The Open Arms center, which is located on the back of the Cornwallis Inn building, has drop in hours mornings and evenings, six days per week, Monday through Saturday, and has 400 to 800 visits each month as well as countless calls for assistance. It is a place where people can be safe, warm and fed. Guests are also directed to whichever relevant community service they need.

More than 40 regular volunteers make the drop in program possible and countless others host other meals and events at Open Arms each month. John mentioned that they get wonderful support from Sobeys, which donates fresh-baked goods for them to be able to feed those in need. He is grateful for their help.

This year a volunteer has been placed in charge of building rapport with landlords in order to always be aware of available accommodations, along with a recently appointed team to collect, store and deliver used furniture to those who will need a fresh start when they get their accommodations.

Often times they are able to see a homeless person in their own apartment within days of having met them, but apartments/rooms are often not the solution. John says that over the past few years they have tried to develop their capacity to address the universal need for community and an approach to life–change that is rooted in meaningful relationships.

“We journey with people to the degree they are willing to move forward towards healthy independence.”

This has also led them to see the importance of forming good relationships with other relevant organizations and resources and it has been their privilege to see Christian churches, approximately 11 in total, from a wide spectrum of traditions, join them in working together to respond to the needs they encounter.

One of their many goals this year, along with helping people, is they are in need of a larger building to be able to offer many opportunities to those in need. John believes that helping people change so they can make better choices is the real solution. They have a busy road ahead but the goal is clear and with winning people on your side, how can you lose?

We need fathers in the fight to end mother-to-child HIV transmission
Source: Fri, 13 Sep 2013 02:06 PM
Author: Mary Mwanyika-Sando, MD

The evidence shows that with the right ARV treatments, we can reduce the risk of transmission from mothers to children to below five percent. And yet, Tanzania’s current HIV transmission rate is 25.7 percent. This is not because of poor services or treatment. Tanzania has made significant progress by integrating preventative HIV transmission treatments within the reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health services. Currently, 93 percent of such clinics have integrated services.

The missing piece of this intervention is fathers. What my patient went through – shame imposed by societal norms – is one of many barriers that hinder complete delivery of comprehensive services needed to speed up the reduction of HIV transmission.

by Elio Iannacci on Sunday, September 8, 2013 8:00pm

Q: So many young performers like Taylor Swift don’t want to identify as feminists. Why is that?

A: What is the bad connotation with feminism? When women have full control of their bodies, when women get paid exactly the same as men, when everything that happens for men happens for women, I can stop calling myself a feminist.

Rally condemns sexism

SMU Women’s Centre organizes event in wake of controversial frosh week cheer

FRANCES WILLICK EDUCATION REPORTER

fwillick@herald.ca @CH-Frances

About 200 people gathered at Saint Mary’s University Thursday afterno on to denounce s exism and a culture that allows rape to b e trivializ ed.

The rally, organized by the school’s women’s centre in the wake of a frosh week cheer touting rape, drew students, professors, alumni and residents of the wider community to listen to speeches and show support for organizations fighting sexual violence.

“It’s a way to speak out (and say) we’re not going to tolerate this and we want to make our voice heard on campus," said Lewis Rendell of the SMU Women’s Centre. Rendell and other speakers emphasized, though, that rape culture is not a problem that exists solely at Saint Mary’s.

“It’s not just a university problem or a generational problem. It’s a society problem," Rendell said. “There’s just a flippancy, an attitude toward sexual assault and violence against women, like it’s not a big deal or it’s a punchline. We don’t need that sort of attitude perpetuated on our campus."

Halifax poet laureate El Jones preceded a reading of a poem about sexual assault by telling the crowd that Saint Mary’s isn’t alone in grappling with the problem .

“SMU didn’t create rape culture. . . . SMU got caught. But everybody else has been doing it," Jones said.

Recent graduate Clinton Chapdelaine returned to campus to take part in the rally, both to defend the reputation of his school and to help promote an anti-rape message.

“Right now, I think the school has sort of a bad name . . . and I think we shou ld try to do something about that, try to raise awareness. You’d think that ‘rape is awful’ isn’t that hard of a concept to grasp. But apparently, some people are still having difficulty with it."

One of many men who attended the rally, Chapdelaine said as a feminist, he felt compelled to be there.

“Despite if I was a du de or a lady, I’d still be here."

Saint Mary’s alumnae Alleson Kase participated in the rally, holding a sign that read Frosh Week 2013 Demeans My SMU Degree. But her objections go beyond the potential damage to the university’s reputation.

Kase said she has spent years fighting for women’s rights and wants to see the university administration and students’ association take responsibility for the incident last week.

“I was part of the women’s movement during the s econd wave of feminism. In the 70s, I was involved with women’s collectives. We fought long and hard for various ru les and laws against violence against women , and to think that 35 years later this is still going on — it’s unacceptable."

On Wednesday, the women’s centre at Saint Mary’s submitted a list of 13 requests to the university. They included a zero-tolerance policy on sexual assault, mandatory education about consent and other issu es during orientation week, new p ositions in the students’ association and funding for a sexual assault counsellor. Rendell said funding for that position was cut a few years ago.

The president of the faculty union, Marc Lamoureux, said Saint Mary’s president Colin Dodds has asked all full-time and part-time faculty to attend an assembly today about first-year orientation .

There’s just a flippancy, an attitude toward sexual assault and violence against women, like it’s not a big deal or it’s a punchline. We don’t need that sort of attitude perpetuated on our campus.
