Er.
Mohammad Asim, the head of the National Coalition Party (NCP) Secretariat, on
Tuesday announced that the newly formed coalition- Afghanistan Electoral
Alliance (AEA) has decided to nominate Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, the leader of the
National Coalition of Afghanistan (NCA), as the Presidential candidate for the
next spring's election.
Mr.
Asim further added that Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal, the leader of the Hezb-e-Islami
Party (HIP) and Hajji Muhammad Muhaqeq, the leader of the
Hezb-e-Wahdat-e-Islami Mardom Afghanistan (HWIMA), will be nominated as the
First Vice-President and Second Vice-President, respectively.
While,
Mr. Asim said that the nominations would be finalized within the next two days,
Hajji Muhammad Muhaqeq and Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal have not rejected the reports
regarding the Presidential candidate.
Meanwhile,
it is being reportedly said that Junbesh Milli Party (JMP) is the only party
that has not agreed upon Dr. Abdullah's candidacy.
"All
the members of the Afghanistan Electoral Alliance, except Junbesh-e-Milli has
agreed on the candidacy of Dr. Abdullah Abdullah for Presidency, Abdul Hadi
Arghandiwal for the post of First Vice-President and Hajji Muhammad Muhaqeq for
the post of Second Vice-President in the next year's election," said Er.
Asim.
For
several months, speculation over Dr. Abdullah's candidacy had been doing the
rounds, finally it is confirmed that he will be one of the contenders in the
2014 Presidential race.
Er.
Asim said that the members of the AEA unanimously agreed on nominating Dr.
Abdullah Abdullah for Presidency, Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal as the First
Vice-President, and Hajji Muhammad Muhaqeq as the Second Vice-President in the
upcoming election. However, the formal announcement would be made by Thursday.
Mr.
Muhaqeq said that he has tendered his resignation from his Lower House
membership on Sunday and will contest for the post of Second Vice-President in
the upcoming election.
"I
have resigned from the Parliament on Sunday. I will contest for the post of
Second Vice-President. But, the decision is not final. A final decision will be
taken within a week," said Mr. Muhaqeq.
Meanwhile,
Mr. Arghandiwal commented on the nominations saying that although, an agreement
has been reached on his nomination as the First Vice-President, but the
decision is not final.
"I
have been nominated to contest for the post of First Vice-President. But, it is
not a final decision and talks are underway," said Mr. Arghandiwal.
In
the previous Presidential election, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah was one of the
strongest contenders after President Karzai. But, when the election entered the
second round, Dr. Abdullah refused to contest and accused the Independent
Election Commission (IEC) of poll rigging to support Karzai.
Last
month, a gathering of Afghan political figures officially announced to the
public the formation of grand coalition called the "Afghanistan Electoral
Alliance (AEA)," bringing together many of the most prominent political
parties and leaders in Afghanistan under one banner.
The
alliance has been formed by the Islamic People's Party (IPP), Wahdat-e-Islami
Party, National Movement of Afghanistan (NMA), National Coalition of
Afghanistan (NCA), National Front Party (NFP), Afghanistan Green Trend (AGT),
Afghanistan Naween (AN), Hezb-e-Wahdat, Iqtidar-e-Millie, Itehad-i-Aqwam and
Coordination Council of Arab People (CCAP).
Dr.
Abdullah Abdullah, leader of the NCA; Atta Muhammad Noor, Governor of Balkh
province; Haji Mohammad Mohaqeq, leader of the IPP; Abdul Rasheed Dostum, head
of the Junbesh Milli Party (JMP); Salahuddin Rabbani, acting head of the
Jameyat Party (JP); Amrullah Saleh, former Director of the National Directorate
of Security (NDS); Ahmad Zia Massood, head of the NFP; and Muhammad Younus
Qanooni, a member of the JP, were some of the prominent political leaders who
attended the meeting and signed the agreement solidifing newly formed alliance.

Focuses On Afghan Youth

The
Office of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA)
announced on Friday that working with the Afghan youth is a top priority for
the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon.
The
UN recently helped organize a music concert in Bamyan in front of the Buddha
statue to honor International Youth Day.
"For
UN secretary general Ban Ki Moon, working with and for young people is one his
top priorities. For International Youth Day he has encouraged member states,
youth led organizations and other stakeholders to act to promote the rights of
your young people and maximize the development potential of the youth around
the world including of course in Afghanistan," an official from the UNAMA
office in Kabul said".
At
the concert in Bamyan, many youth and women showed up to watch and participate
in the performances.
"I
don't understand what kind of people are those who engage in warsand violence,
because they disturb the general public and their own families," said
Afghan singer Ms. Farzana.
Coexistence,
tolerance, peace and youth mobilization against corruption were the focus
messages of the UN-sponsored concert.
"Youths
of the country should speak out against inequalities in society and they
shouldn't remain silent. In the past, it was not like this, but the youth don't
effect change, because they lack hope, confronted by all the problems in the
country," famous Afghan signer Wahid Qasemi said".
"Singing
is the only way that helps to convey any message to the people including the
message of peace, it is the only means that support us to convey the message of
peace to the world," said Aryana Saeed, a female Afghan singer.
The
idea for the musical event in Bamyan was originally received with mixed
feelings. While local clerics were opposed to it, civil society groups spoke
out in favor and agreed to help organize.
Ultimately,
with the UN's leadership, the concert was held successfully, although heavy
security was needed.

The
protesters accompanied by families of the victims were carrying photos of
political figures who were accused of war crimes, and urged that those involved
behind the massacre of civilians should be tried for their crimes.

International
Community ignore Pakistan’s support to Taliban
Officials
in presidential palace of Afghanistan warned that the bilateral security
agreement between Kabul and Washington will not be possible if terrorist
attacks backed by Pakistan continues.
Aimal
Faizi, spokesman for president Hamid Karzai said it would be impossible for
president Karzai’s government to sign the security pact with Washington if
Taliban continues to its attacks in Afghanistan.
Mr.
Faizi further added that Washington might need to wait for the upcoming
government in Afghanistan to sign the bilateral security agreement.
Faizi
quoted by Radio Free Europe (RFE/RL) said, “Taliban militants receive
instructions from Pakistani intelligence and army to carry out attack in
Afghanistan, which leads to civilians casualties. The international community
led by United States of America waivers from interference of Pakistan in
Afghanistan.”
He
said, US and other Western officials have confirmed that militants and
terrorist groups in Pakistan carry out attacks in Afghanistan. The terrorist
groups are supported by Pakistani intelligence, and sent to Afghanistan after
receiving training.
Aimal
Faizi warned that the support by the Afghan people and Afghan government are
gradually reducing towards bilateral security agreement with the United States
of America, if US and western nations ignore Paksitan’s inteference in
Afghanistan.
This
comes as Afghan president Hamid Karzai visited Washington to discuss the
bilateral security agreement with the US officials. Karzai insisted that the
sovereignty and national benefits of Afghanistan should be guaranteed and urged
United States to support and equip Afghan security forces.
In
the meantime Aimal Faizi said it is important that the security situation of
Afghanistan should improve in order to sign the bilateral security agreement
with Washington.
The
bilateral security agreement is part of the long term strategic cooperation
agreement which was signed by Afghan president Hamid Karzai and US president Barack
Obama earlier last year in Kabul.
The
security pact will specify bilateral security and defense cooperation between
Kabul and Washington beyond 2014. The presence of US troops and military bases
are also part of the bilateral security agreement.

A Bridge Between Asia And Europe
Sunday,
September 29, 2013
Kabul (BNA) Hamid Karzai, President of the
Islamic Republic of Afghanistan once again in the session of Europe-Asia
Economic Association said that Afghanistan can become a commercial transit road
between Asia and Europe.
BNA commentator commenting on the issue
writes, since the establishment of interim government in Afghanistan, until now
the expansion and development of economic and commercial ties between the
countries of this vast region have been at the focus of Afghan policies.
According to the experts, Afghanistan can be
used as bridge between these two big continents that enjoy of having huge
economic and commercial potentials.
Considering the geographical situation of the
country, Hamid Karzai President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan
repeatedly has said that a stable and peaceful Afghanistan is not only to the
benefit of its own people but is to the benefit of the countries and people of
the region.
If security and stability ensured in
Afghanistan, at the first step economic infrastructures are strengthen and
economic and commercial ties among the countries of the region further improve
that certainly positively affect the entire world. For this reason, Afghan
president during his visits to the neighboring countries persistently
emphasizes on expansion of political, economic, and cultural ties among the
countries of the region.
Considering the new situation and the need of
time, President Karzai addressing the session of Europe – Asia Association in
Beijing stressed that due to the geographical situation of our country it can
serve as bridge between the rich markets of the countries of this huge
continent.
Afghanistan enjoys such a good geographical
location that can be constructive in expansion of commercial and transition
roads between economic centers in Europe and Asia.
Considering the important geographical
location of Afghanistan and its role in improving commercial ties among all
Asian countries and intimately across the world, it requires the countries of
the region, Asia and Europe to spare no any efforts for ensuring peace and
stability in Afghanistan.
If the countries of the region, Asia and
Europe, make practical efforts for restoring peace and stability to Afghanistan
without doubt that leads to the boosting of economy and trade growth in the
region, Asia and Europe continents as a
whole. T. Nemat

British
casualties in Afghanistan
All
casualties suffered by UK forces are a source of profound regret. UK personnel
put their lives on the line to help the people of Afghanistan to build a strong
and stable country; we cannot pay high enough tribute to the job that they are
doing, or the sacrifice some of them have made.
MOD
is committed to publishing casualty statistics, openly and on our website.
While we do not publish statistics for all personnel who require minor
treatment, we do record details of all personnel who need to be admitted to our
field hospitals with more serious injuries and with diseases.
The
Defence Medical Services aspire to provide first class treatment for all
injured or ill Service personnel, aiming to restore them to full fitness or,
where this is not possible, to the best state of health their condition
permits. We also work closely with the NHS to ensure a smooth transition into
NHS care when responsibility for their healthcare transfers at the point of
demobilisation for reservists or discharge for regulars.
Casualty
figures
For
the period 7 October 2001 to 31 December 2005
Centrally
available records show that:
•6

Work
continues to verify and validate data for aeromedical evacuations and field
hospital admission in both Iraq and Afghanistan prior to January 2006. Once
this data is compiled it will be added to the website.
For
the period 1 January 2006 to 31 July 2013
Centrally
available records show that:
•2,146
UK military and civilian personnel were admitted to UK field hospitals and

Afghan
military, police training cost Canadians $500M
By Daniel Proussalidis ,Parliamentary Bureau

OTTAWA
— Canada's participation in NATO's effort to put Afghan military and police
recruits through their paces has cost taxpayers roughly $500 million over the
last three years.
The
commander of Operation Attention, Maj.-Gen. Dean Milner, announced the
estimated cost Wednesday.
He
added that Canadian mentors have helped field more than 50 Afghan battalions so
far and have about 10 more to build.
"So
that's going to keep us busy right through until the end of our mission,"
said Milner. "We're still training a lot of recruits. We're still focusing
on counter (improvised explosive device) training, medical training and our air
component training."
Milner
said Canada's forces have also been able to avoid many of the insider attacks
by Islamist infiltrators that have killed British and U.S. trainers since 2011.
"There's
been big efforts to work closely with the Afghans," he said, adding that
screening of recruits to filter out Taliban sympathizers has improved.
While
Milner said he's impressed that Afghanistan's 345,000-strong security forces
plan and conduct their own anti-Taliban missions, he admitted their casualty
rate is higher than what NATO forces faced.
"We
continue to see their confidence growing," said Milner. "I think
they'll work through this."
Right
now, there are about 800 Canadian military and police trainers spread out over
14 locations — mostly in, and around, Afghanistan's capital, Kabul.
Canada
will begin reducing its presence in Afghanistan next month, leaving just 375
people there by Christmas, and bringing everyone home by the end of March.

Commentary:
The Countries Of The Region Should Not Leave Afghanistan Alone In War Against
Terrorism
Monday,
September 16, 2013
Kabul (BNA) Hamid Karzai the president of
Islamic Republic of Afghanistan delivering a speech in Shanghai Economic
Cooperation organization summit emphasized that the aim of Afghan government
and people is to provide a better future for their homeland and for getting
this noble goal they see friendly cooperation and trust building with the
countries of the region a must.
BNA political and economic analyst writes,
Hamid Karzai the President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan delivering a
speech in Shanghai recent summit touched on important and vital issues that
indicate the strong will of Afghan people and government for restoring
stability and extending cooperation and coordination among the countries of the
region.
The statement comes in a time; terrorist
activities have imposed a grave threat to the countries of the region where the
Shanghai member countries suffer the most.
The Afghan president added, spreading of
terrorism and extremism to the countries of the region not only fatal for
Afghanistan and Pakistan but it will have grave consequences for the region and
entire world.
Mr. Karzai deeply understanding the situation
of the region warns that this evil phenomenon by passing each day extends its
dimensions and emerges as a problem knows no any border.
The Afghan addressing the leaders of Shanghai
member countries stipulated that the Afghan Taliban are not only involved in
violent terrorist activities, at the mealtime the Islamic Movement of
Turkmenistan, Lashkar-Taiba of Pakistan, Chechen’s Taliban who fight within the
framework of Al-Qaida are a great threat to stability and security of
Afghanistan.
It is worth of mentioning that these terrorist
groups try to use Afghan territory as a pass way to central Asian countries.
The countries of the region even the entire world should seriously pay
attention to this menace, which challenge the world community.
The statements are open facts that Afghans are
suffering the most in fight against terrorism. They have lost their sons and
sustained heavy losses in fight against terrorism.
Therefore, for preventing the spreading of
terrorism in to neighboring countries, it requires those countries to assist
Afghanistan in fighting against this terrible phenomenon.
Afghan President insisted that terrorism is a
grave problem of the region and not limited to Afghanistan.
To fight this fatal problem, the countries
that have gather in this summit should not expect powers outside the region to
come and settle the problem, because
overcoming this challenging threat, first and foremost is the obligation of
every country of the region, therefore they should fight jointly against terrorism until complete eradication.
Leaving Afghanistan alone in fight against terrorism will have grave
consequences not only for the region but also for the entire world.
President Karzai says, “Ensuring peace and
stability is the main factor for ensuring security and peace in all countries
of the region that share the same interests and challenges.”
In
this way, the Afghan president encourages the Shanghai member countries to pay
serious attention to the hideouts of terrorists in the region and the factors
that further strengthen terrorism in the region, otherwise, their objectives
which are boosting security, economic and social ties among the member
countries will never achieved under the
threat of terrorism. Therefore, settling the grave problem of terrorism
requires the honest and transparent cooperation of the countries of the region
and entire world.

Raonic
beats Berdych, claims Bangkok title
THAILAND:
Canadian Milos Raonic used his thumping serve to ace his way to victory over
top seed Tomas Berdych on Sunday, with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 win at the Thailand
Open.
Third
seed Raonic took full advantage of his big serve to beat his Czech opponent,
firing 18 aces — his last to set up a pair of match points.
After
winning the first set in a tiebreaker, the Canadian tightened his grip in the
second to earn the fifth title of his career, converting his first match point
with a down-the-line winner after 77 minutes.
His
second title of the season, after San Jose in February, will serve him well in
the points chase to a possible place in the eight-man ATP World Tour Finals in
London in November.
“Of
course, it feel great to win the title,” said Raonic.
“The
first set was about finding rhythm. Once I did I was solid after that.”
“I
knew I had to play slightly more aggressive, not just put the ball in play. I
did that and was able to take control, I got some insight into what I needed to
do to beat him. It was great to be back on hard court. I got some confidence
and that is what I needed this week.”
Raonic
also beat Berdych at their only previous meeting, in Cincinnati in 2012.
Berdych,
the only member of the ranking top 10 without a title in 2013, admitted he was
out-played in the Thai final. Raonic, who has reached nine finals, has achieved
all of his five trophies on his favoured fast hard courts.
The
Canadian went one win further than his new coach, Croatian Ivan Ljubicic, who
played the final in Bangkok in 2006 but lost.
Raonic
said his win will not lead to complacency.

Governor
General pays tributes to Canadian heroes in Alberta visit
By
Jason van Rassel, Calgary Herald September 17, 2013
Governor
General David Johnston is in southern Alberta to acknowledge many of the
efforts stemming from the June Flood. Johnston travelled to the Siksika Nation,

Outstanding Service to the community for its efforts responding to the
devastating June floods and the subsequent recovery.About 1,000 people from the

Gov.
Gen. David Johnston is in southern Alberta, where he is paying tribute to
Canadian heroes past and present.
After
landing in Calgary on Monday morning, Johnston travelled to the Siksika Nation,
east of Calgary, where he will present the Governor General’s Commendation for
Outstanding Service to the community for its efforts responding to the
devastating June floods and the subsequent recovery.
About
1,000 people from the Siksika Nation were forced from their homes when severe
flooding hit southern Alberta at the end of June, and many remain so as the
rebuilding efforts continue.
That’s
also the case in High River, where Johnston will visit with emergency workers
Tuesday morning and bestow another Governor General’s Commendation for
Outstanding Service on the community.
On
Tuesday afternoon, Johnston will present a Governor General’s Commendation for
Outstanding Service to the citizens of Calgary during a noon-hour event with
Mayor Naheed Nenshi at the Jack Singer Concert Hall.
Johnston
began his local tour Monday morning at Henry Wise Wood High School in the city’s
southwest, where he opened a travelling exhibit showcasing the bravery, courage
and public service of Canadians throughout our country’s history.
It’s
an Honour! is a travelling exhibit that showcases the stories of Canadians who
have been recognized for their contributions to the country with the Order of
Canada and decorations for bravery or military valour.
While
some have become household names, such as Terry Fox, Johnston said the exhibit
is replete with stories of people from coast to coast whose exploits aren’t
found in any history books.
“They’re
ordinary Canadians who have done extraordinary things,” he said.
The
interactive exhibit is housed in a 1,000-square-foot tractor trailer unit that
will cross the country for the next two years, visiting schools, community
centres, public events and small towns.
In
addition to teaching people about the various honours bestowed on Canadians,
Johnston said he hopes the exhibit will also serve as an inspiration to those
who view it.
“In
Canada, everyone — everyone — has something to give,” he said.
The
exhibit is funded by a donation from the Taylor Family Foundation of Calgary.
Philanthropist
Don Taylor said he hopes the exhibit will also make Canadians proud.
“The
main thing I have gained (from the exhibit) is a pride in being Canadian and a
pride in my country,” said Taylor, a member of the Order of Canada.
