Soccer coach guilty of sex assault

STEVE BRUCE COURT REPORTER

sbr uce@herald.ca @CH_cour ts

A Halifax soccer coach has pleaded guilty to s exually assau lting one of his players, a 14-year-old girl, last fall.

Konstanty (Kostek) Bedoa-Gorski, 24, entered the plea Tuesday in Halifax provincial court.

Bedoa-Gorski, a psychology student at Saint Mary’s University, will be sentenced Dec. 18.

Judge Michael Sherar ordered the young man to co-operate with the preparation of a presentence report.

Defence lawyer Thomas Singleton told the court the sentencing date would allow his client to finish this semester at SMU.

But the south-end Halifax university announced later Tuesday that Bedoa-Gorski had been suspended and barred from campus.

A dis ciplinary hearing will b e held as soon as possible, a university spokesman said.

SMU was in the national headlines last week for a frosh week chant encouraging the rape of underage girls.

Bedoa-Gorski abused the girl last October.

He was also charged with sexual interference. That charge will be withdrawn after he is sentenced for sexual assault.

Bedoa-Gorski remains free on an under taking , with conditions banning him from using the Internet, having contact with children under the age of 16 and going to schools, parks, playgrounds and other places known to be frequented by kids.

He’s forbidden from communicating with the victim or going to her home. The girl’s identity is protected by a publication ban.

Bedoa-Gorski was director of MAPS Elite, a Halifax-based program for high-performance soccer players between the ages of 12 and 16 .

He’s also coached in Soccer Nova Scotia’s provincial program, at the Farias Soccer Academy and with clubs such as Cole Harbour, Dartmouth United, Halifax Dunbrack and Dartmouth FC.

VOICE OF THE PEOPLE-   HONOUR YOURSELF

TEACH RESPECT

Christie Blotnicky (Sept. 11 Reader’s Corner) is exactly right. Most people are misinformed about the feminist movement. I have been a feminist for about 50 years, and I take every opportunity to inform young women what we stood for and what we achieved. We did make progress, but recent events show there is still much to be achieved.

The basic premise of feminism is, as Christie stated, equality for everyone. Many parents do teach this to their children, but that’s not enough.

Respect for all people must be taught and reinforced in schools, universities, workplaces, and by each of us every time we get the chance. Why not start right now with a teaching module to be inserted in every classroom in the province?

Janet Br ush, Halifax

AND.......  READER'S CORNER

READER’S CORNER

‘How many of you are feminists?’

I remember being in high school in Mr. Plato’s Global History class when he point-blank asked the students: “How many of you are feminists?"

Only about three of us raised our hands. Plato told them all they were doorknobs (or something to that effect, lovingly) and explained that feminism is the basic b elief in equality, something the other kids had never considered before.

Kids aren’t taught about feminism — not what it actually is, anyway. They close their eyes and imagine feminists as fat lesbians, frothing at the mouth and hating men while they stuff their faces with three-day-old tuna casserole.

They don’t think of their mothers, struggling to make the same pay as the men at work. They don’t see their older sisters dealing with misogyny each and every day as a university student. They don’t see their neighbour being raped, their best friend b eing turned down for jobs, or their grandmother being forced to stay home because that was her “place."

Kids need to know what feminism is, because feminism is how we’re all going to make our world a better place. Making each group equal is how we move beyond issues like what’s happening in our university system, in or our political system, in or our workplaces and in our schools.

You have to teach people when they are young that all people deserve equal respect, or else you’ll lose them. Why are kids in their first year of university so quick to accept a sexist chant? Because they don’t know any better, and that’s our fault.

We have to do better for the girls and the boys, or else the next generation will lose something that’s been essential in shaping the current generation: the ongoing fight for gender equality.

Christie Blotnicky, Halifax

Rally condemns sexism

SMU Women’s Centre organizes event in wake of controversial frosh week cheer

FRANCES WILLICK EDUCATION REPORTER

fwillick@herald.ca @CH-Frances

About 200 people gathered at Saint Mary’s University Thursday afterno on to denounce s exism and a culture that allows rape to b e trivializ ed.

The rally, organized by the school’s women’s centre in the wake of a frosh week cheer touting rape, drew students, professors, alumni and residents of the wider community to listen to speeches and show support for organizations fighting sexual violence.

“It’s a way to speak out (and say) we’re not going to tolerate this and we want to make our voice heard on campus," said Lewis Rendell of the SMU Women’s Centre. Rendell and other speakers emphasized, though, that rape culture is not a problem that exists solely at Saint Mary’s.

“It’s not just a university problem or a generational problem. It’s a society problem," Rendell said. “There’s just a flippancy, an attitude toward sexual assault and violence against women, like it’s not a big deal or it’s a punchline. We don’t need that sort of attitude perpetuated on our campus."

Halifax poet laureate El Jones preceded a reading of a poem about sexual assault by telling the crowd that Saint Mary’s isn’t alone in grappling with the problem .

“SMU didn’t create rape culture. . . . SMU got caught. But everybody else has been doing it," Jones said.

Recent graduate Clinton Chapdelaine returned to campus to take part in the rally, both to defend the reputation of his school and to help promote an anti-rape message.

“Right now, I think the school has sort of a bad name . . . and I think we shou ld try to do something about that, try to raise awareness. You’d think that ‘rape is awful’ isn’t that hard of a concept to grasp. But apparently, some people are still having difficulty with it."

One of many men who attended the rally, Chapdelaine said as a feminist, he felt compelled to be there.

“Despite if I was a du de or a lady, I’d still be here."

Saint Mary’s alumnae Alleson Kase participated in the rally, holding a sign that read Frosh Week 2013 Demeans My SMU Degree. But her objections go beyond the potential damage to the university’s reputation.

Kase said she has spent years fighting for women’s rights and wants to see the university administration and students’ association take responsibility for the incident last week.

“I was part of the women’s movement during the s econd wave of feminism. In the 70s, I was involved with women’s collectives. We fought long and hard for various ru les and laws against violence against women , and to think that 35 years later this is still going on — it’s unacceptable."

On Wednesday, the women’s centre at Saint Mary’s submitted a list of 13 requests to the university. They included a zero-tolerance policy on sexual assault, mandatory education about consent and other issu es during orientation week, new p ositions in the students’ association and funding for a sexual assault counsellor. Rendell said funding for that position was cut a few years ago.

The president of the faculty union, Marc Lamoureux, said Saint Mary’s president Colin Dodds has asked all full-time and part-time faculty to attend an assembly today about first-year orientation .

There’s just a flippancy, an attitude toward sexual assault and violence against women, like it’s not a big deal or it’s a punchline. We don’t need that sort of attitude perpetuated on our campus.

Learn the warning signs of suicide, grieving mom says

SELENA ROSS STAFF REPORTER sross@herald.ca @CH-sross

Heather Jellicoe had a knack for telling funny stories, and she loved dancing and playing soccer. She had long, dark hair, she worked at the Keshen Goodman library, and her favourite subject was history.

Heather died by suicide just before Christmas in 2010, when she was 18.

“Her death was unnoticed by the media, unlike Rehtaeh Parsons," said her mother, Sandra Pedersen, who cried as she remembered her daughter.

“Heather was just a forgotten soul — what she looked like, what her strengths were."

Rehtaeh’s name was Heather’s spelled backwards. Pedersen said she couldn’t stop thinking about Rehtaeh’s family after their 17-year-old daughter’s death in April, three days after a suicide attempt .

When she saw that the family planned to attend this year’s Halifax Walk for World Suicide Prevention Day, Pedersen decided to talk to them. She did so at a reception in City Hall after the walk Sunday, which had a turnout of about 100 people.

It was the sixth annual walk o f its kind, and organizers specifically thanked certain people who had worked to address suicide this year.

Among them were Fred and Elizabeth Fountain, whose son Alex died at 20 in 2009. They donated more than $1 million to the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre Foundation for a mental health project .

Rehtaeh’s family was also mentioned. Several individuals approached Glen Canning, her father, and Leah Parsons, her mother.

Canning said that since April he’s been contacted by dozens of Nova Scotians whose children are suicidal.

Pedersen told the two she appreciated their outspokenness.

“I could not have been as public as they were. I could hardly get out of bed," said Pederson, who lives in Clayton Park West. “They’re putting it out there for everybody in their position."

After Heather died, Pedersen said funeral home staff told her they had held memorials for seven other suicide victims that month, all ages 18 to 21.

“I was absolutely heartbroken because I was like, ‘How can that be?" she said. “Eight people in one month in one funeral home in Halifax, Nova Scotia?"

According to a 2009 provincial report, Nova Scotia’s suicide rate was lower than the national average at nine out of 100,000 people. Of the province’s suicide deaths, 84 per cent of victims were male and 55 per cent had b een diagnos ed with a mental health disorder.

Pedersen said the solution is to talk about it more, to learn the warning signs and to let young people in particular know where they can find help.

She began walking to raise support for Kids Help Phone. The number is 1-800-668-6868.

More information about the warning signs o f suicide, and places to get help, can be found at suicideprevention.ca.

Dal poised to shepherd aquaculture

SARAH STEWART-CLARK Editor’s Note

Dr. Sarah Stewar t-Clark is an assistant professor in shellfish aquaculture at the Faculty of Agriculture at Dalhousie University and researches shellfish aquaculture and invasive species. She is presenting at BioMarine 2013 this week in Halifax.

Aquaculture is the fastest growing food industry in the world and I believe that Nova Scotia is uniquely poised to play an exciting role in the expansion o f sustainable aquaculture operations in Canada .

The benefits to Nova Scotia are clear. Aquaculture employment is highest in rural, coastal communities, providing rural communities with valuable economic development opportunities. This economic development can and is being done in an environmentally sustainable way on many aquaculture sites within our province.

Nova Scotia is world-renowned for its seafood products; aquaculture continu es to expand this production of high-quality seafood from our province and expands our niche in the market as a provider of high-quality products.

In order to expand in a sustainable way forward, I see education and innovation as pivotal components of a strong, sustainable aquaculture industry in Nova S cotia .

Education, extended learning, research and scientific development must be key components of the future of aquaculture in Nova Scotia. As the industry moves forward, s o must the capacity for research so that industry challenges and environmental challenges can be assessed and mitigated using science-based information .

Industry members and government regulators all need access to the best science-based information available with which to manage the industry in a forward direction. Nova Scotia is well poised to move forward in this science-based, educated direction .

Our province is home to one o f only two universities in Canada that offers full BSc and MSc degrees in aquaculture. The Dalhousie University faculty of agriculture aquaculture Centre is not only training new aquaculture scientists, but has faculty members dedicated to aquaculture research in both finfish and shellfish s ectors.

Our expertise in shellfish genomics, eco-physiology, nutrition and new species development are great assets to the continued growth of sustainable aquaculture in Nova Scotia.

Dalhousie’s faculty of agriculture is providing critical solutions to the industry in projects like our work on invasive species detection. Through our innovative leadership, we are creating monitoring solutions for new invasive species as they arise on aquaculture sites.

Our extension s ervices are poised to offer training opportunities to industry members on key topics as they arise, such as dealing with species invasions in shellfish operations. Our research outreach to industry members is a strength that I believe will continue to drive aquaculture forward in a positive direction for Nova Scotia and b eyond.

By par tnering with industry to ensure that they have the sciencebased information required to move forward in a sustainable manner, by developing innovative research tools to assist managers in making the best science-based decisions possible and by educating a new generation of aquaculture members with the information they need to make sciencebased decisions, the aquaculture centre at Dalhousie University faculty of agriculture is well poised to ensure the future of aquaculture in Nova Scotia is a positive one that will benefit generations of Nova Scotians to come.

This is a senseless crime. It is most likely a University Student. USA COMPANY BUYS IN2 CANADA RAIL- OIL -  WTF????

Railway open to handling cr ude

BRUCE ERSKINE BUSINESS REPORTER

berskine@herald.ca @CH_Br uceErskine

Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway Ltd. wou ld b e happy to take on new business from a Texas energy company, says Mario Brault, president of its parent company, Genesee & Wyoming Canada .

“We are ready, willing and able to do it ," he said in an interview from Montreal on Friday.

NuStar Energy LP o f San Antonio announced this week that it is planning to build a railcar off-loading facility at its petroleum storage terminal in Point Tupp er.

The firm wants to ship western Canadian cru de via rail to the Richmond County operation, where it will b e loaded onto tankers bound for refineries around the world.

The proposed facility would also handle natural gas liquids.

NuStar’s Cape Breton operation is a storage and transshipment terminal capable of handling 7.6 million barrels of refined products and cru de.

The facility has 37 storage tanks, and more capacity wou ld be added as part of the railcar project .

The NuStar project, still in the very early stages, would involve hauling crude oil and gas liquids on mixed-cargo freight trains of 16 to 20 cars.

Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia Railway operates a 125-kilometre short line between Truro and Sydney.

The line is overseen by the provincial Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Department under rules that reflect Transport Canada guidelines for national railways.

Transport Canada issued an emergency directive on the shipment of dangerous goods after the disastrous Lac-Megantic derailment that was also issued to Cape Breton & Central by the province.

A provincial o fficial said the railway is already in compliance with the directive, which ordered railways not to operate one-person crews or to leave dangerous goods trains unattended on a main line.

Brault said the short line already handles petroleum products for Imp erial Oil and he was “very confident" it could comply with any directives from Transportation Canada.

While he wasn’t familiar with the details of the NuStar plan, Brault called the prospective development “a breath of fresh air" and was looking forward to dis cussing the project with the Texas company.

“It is good news and we are ready," he said.

Brault discounted concerns that the rail line wasn’t up to the task.

“We’ll put more money into the track if we need to," he said. “It’s a good problem to have."

Harper, Baird showed skill in complex Syria crisis

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird walk in the gardens of St. Peterburg's Constantine Palace Thursday, Sept. 5, prior to the G20 summit. Photo: THE CANADIAN PRESS/Adrian Wyld

 Michael Den Tandt
Published: September 15, 2013, 3:19 pm

In the very near term at least, it looks as though U.S. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry have managed to temporarily and partially extricate themselves from the shambles of their Syria manoeuvring, in the process setting a new standard for the conduct of realpolitik by the Great Powers. Call it the Inspector Clouseau approach: Stumble and trip over your own feet enough times and perhaps you’ll eventually roll out with just a few scratches, the way a drunk sometimes does after a car crash.

Already Sunday morning, with the ink not dry on a U.S.-Russia accord struck the previous day, calling for the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons by next year, Obama was declaring victory, in his half-hearted way. “Keep in mind that my entire goal throughout this exercise has been to make sure that what happened on August 21st does not happen again.” the American President told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. “Are you confident that won’t happen again?” the interviewer asked. “Well I think we have the possibility of making sure it doesn’t happen again,” responded Obama.

As magisterial assertions of unshakable will by the world’s most powerful human go, that leaves something to be desired. But facing defeat in Congress over a military strike Americans overwhelmingly did not want, and also the near-certainty that his proposed limited, targeted, unbelievably-small-yet-not-a-pinprick bombing campaign would only exacerbate the chaos in Syria, Obama took the best face-saving exit he could find, kindly offered by the great humanitarian Russian President Vladimir Putin.

It is certain that relieving Syrian dictator Bashar Assad of his 1000 tonnes of Sarin, mustard gas and other poisons will prove more complex and costly, if it is even possible, than envisioned in the U.S.-Russian communiqué. It remains to be seen how Obama’s diminished international stature, and Putin’s enhanced standing, will complicate those efforts, let alone prospects for an end to the Syrian war. It is a debacle that no amount of narrative re-casting by the White House will gloss over.

There are two ancillary players here, however, who, come what may, have emerged with their foreign-policy street cred strengthened. That would be Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the reluctant warrior Obama’s faithful corner man and new BFF, and John R. Baird, Canada’s belligerently non-belligerent foreign minister. This was not Harper and Baird’s first rodeo, and it showed.

To begin, they sidestepped the call to arms in the initial round of international phone calls between Obama, Kerry and foreign leaders and foreign ministers, that came in the immediate aftermath of the chemical attack in Damascus on Aug. 21. At that point a strike appeared inevitable. Britain and France quickly joined in the war drumming. The government of Canada just as quickly made a categorical statement that it would not be joining any military effort. That disarmed the opposition Liberals and New Democrats, who otherwise would have held up the spectre of Iraq and Afghanistan, the mixed results in Libya, and the Harper government’s past bellicosity vis-à-vis Iran, as evidence of a headlong rush to war. Baird and people close to him have insisted that Canada was never asked to participate militarily, because we don’t own any missiles — to which we must respond, yes, of course, whatever. Had there been a desire to participate, we would have done so symbolically.

But at the same time, Harper and Baird took pains to avoid the tactical mistake of withholding political support in Obama’s time of need. Their rhetoric was as bellicose as Kerry’s, at times even more so. At the G-20 in St. Petersburg, Russia, Harper forcefully denounced Assad and called for a strong international response. In effect they helped Obama rattle his sabre, without rattling their own. Relationships between states are relationships between the individuals who control those states; Harper’s relationship with Obama has grown frayed over the Keystone XL pipeline and was in need of refurbishment, especially given that Obama’s yea or nay on the pipeline is still pending.

Finally, the government of Canada has been clear-eyed, since the advent of the Russian gambit, about the enormous obstacles in the way of any effective plan to destroy Assad’s chemical weapons. According to a senior government source, foreign affairs analysts believe the proposed disarmament will cost billions, and require thousands of people to implement. Assad’s chemical weapons are believed to be widely dispersed across more than 40 sites, and Syria’s highways are dangerous-to-impassable due to the war. It remains unclear to what extent the dictator’s forces, not to mention the rebels, will co-operate with the disarmament effort. Baird’s skepticism is entirely warranted.

Since Harper’s ham-fisted response to the war in Lebanon in 2006, the opposition have sought to portray him as a foreign-policy neanderthal. That became more difficult after his change of heart on the Afghan mission. His handling of this crisis, which I suspect most Canadians would quietly applaud, will make it more difficult yet.
