you no decency"
Dalhousie didn’t strap Ryan
Millet to a board and pour water over his mouth and nose to simulate the terror
of drowning. But surely Millet must have felt as if he were drowning over the
last four months.
All Dal did was say to this
married, 29-year-old father of three—a non-citizen of Canada who has racked up
nearly half a million dollars in debt pursuing a dental degree—that he will not
graduate or receive a diploma unless he participates in a “remediation program”
of public and private events contrived to humiliate him for his passive
membership in the Facebook Group whose abuses he took repeated steps to correct
and expose.

He must
undergo counselling by a psychologist chosen by Dalhousie, even though there is
no evidence Millet suffers from any psychiatric illness or psychological
disorder. This genteel Halifax version of the Soviet psychiatric gulag ought to
disquiet all citizens of this province.
·
He must
produce written essays and undertake public lectures satisfactory to the Dal’s
Orwellianly titled “Academic Standards Committee.”
·
Most
seriously, the committee has found Millet guilty of “blatant
unprofessionalism,” a finding that may prevent Millet’s certification by
licensing bodies in the two states where he has received job offers, even after
he completes the committee’s so-called “remediation” program.
Dalhousie insisted on trying
Millet in secret, despite his lawyer’s repeated pleas for a public hearing. The
committee denied permission to record the proceedings, or for a court reporter
to create a transcript.
Secrecy had obvious appeal for
Dal. Millet is the only male student who took pro-active steps to tip off the
female colleague who was the target of the most abusive comments on the notorious
Facebook group, and to assist her in gathering the evidence that touched off
the Dalhousie Dental scandal. Those actions embarrassed Dalhousie, and put the
entire dental faculty under critical scrutiny for its possible role in
fostering an atmosphere of misogyny. (The committee that investigated,
prosecuted, tried, judged, and sentenced Millet is made up, in whole or in
part, of those impugned faculty members.)
There is nothing in the record
examined by the committee that could conceivably lead a fair-minded adjudicator
to a finding of blatant unprofessionalism. A Canadian appellate court has already rejected the notion that mere passive
membership in a Facebook group can justify a finding of guilt. Of the six
images Dal says Millet should have reported to the school administration, he
had never seen two, he had taken no active participation on three, and he had
clicked “like” on one, a sophomoric bit of sexual double-entendre available on
numerous internet humour sites.
To those defenders of Dal who
speculate—without evidence—that Millet may have scrubbed the Facebook site of
his own participation before turning over the keys to its primary female
victim, the committee heard no such evidence and made no such claim. This
counterfactual hypothetical formed no part of the case against him. Civilized
societies do not require accused persons to prove their innocence.
Dal’s treatment of Millet would
be repugnant for any public institution, let alone a university. Equally
shameful is the silence of Nova Scotia’s robust feminist community,
understandably vociferous in its criticism of Dal when the scandal broke, for
remaining silent as Dal frog-marched an obviously innocent student through a
secret trial that flouted due process and common decency. This moral failure is
stark in a group that so frequently directs moral exhortations at others.
In a statement emailed to
selected media yesterday, Millet said he would attempt to complete the steps
ordered by the committee in the interests of saving his chosen career and
protecting his family’s livelihood. Here is the full text.
After thoughtful
consideration, I will be completing the remediation as ordered.
The ASC
Committee’s basis of my two month suspension and prescribed remediation program
was my membership and limited participation in the private Facebook Group
displaying at times, elements of sexism, misogyny and homophobia. I tried to
address issues within the group, however imperfectly. I did so both before and
after the controversial Facebook entries became public. I attempted to do so in
a balanced and respectful manner, without pushing my own religious morals and
values upon others. The Committee has concluded that I had a proactive duty to
report and subsequently disassociate myself from the Facebook Group, which I
did do, but not in the timetable they desired.
However, my
unsuccessful defense of my actions is secondary to more important things. I
have three children under the age of four. My wife is a very busy fulltime Mom.
I am too far invested in my chosen career to discontinue. My wife and others
know I am not misogynist, sexist or homophobic. I must be content with that
support, regardless of any contrary opinions of the Committee.
I am willingly
engaging in the remediation training sessions with an open mind to further my
education in this subject. I recognize that everyone can learn further and
accept more responsibility in addressing these important societal issues.
I acknowledge we
live in a society, which too often condones these types of attitudes. While I
regret that the ASC Committee concluded that my solo efforts in confronting
those issues were not enough, I do share the Committee’s desire to highlight
the hurt and consequences of such attitudes.
I have decided to
concentrate all my efforts on completing my degree and supporting my Family. I
hope the media and public will understand my need to focus on what is presently
most important in my life.
I wish to offer my
thanks to all who have assisted my Family throughout this overwhelmingly
difficult time. I recognize and am grateful for all the instructors and
students who have gone out of their way to welcome me back into the clinic. I
offer special gratitude to all my patients who have expressed faith in my work
and continue to stand behind me. Your love and support has meant more to me
than you can ever imagine. I look forward to conclude my excellent dental
education with a strong finish.
Some in the media may construe
this as an admission of guilt. I feel dirty just reading it.

Dal won't say how many former Facebook group members practising dentistry

A lawyer for Dalhousie University says many of the dentistry students disciplined for participating in a misogynistic Facebook group are now employed as dentists.
Sally Gomery, an Ottawa lawyer hired by Dalhousie to give it legal advice on the Facebook posts, would not say how many of the 13 male students found work in their field upon graduation.
‟The university has been advised that many members of the Facebook Group have secured employment as dentists, which would require licensure," Gomery said in an email.
‟To date only one licensing board has contacted Dalhousie for information about a student who belonged to the Facebook Group," she said.
Gomery said she would not comment further because of the university's obligation to protect the privacy of its students.
Following a complaint from a female student, Dalhousie announced in January it had suspended the clinic privileges of 13 male students who were identified as members of a Facebook group featuring sexist and sexually violent posts.
When the suspensions were announced, the registrar of the licensing body that governs Ontario's dentists said he wanted the names of the students involved.
Irwin Fefergrad, of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, said the governing body wanted to make sure that if the disciplined students applied for licences they would face tough questions from the college.
That request was rejected by Dalhousie on privacy grounds.
But as a direct result of the Dalhousie incident, the Ontario regulator added a new question to its licensing application, Fefergrad said in an interview Tuesday.
He said the form now asks applicants if they were ever the subject of a complaint, inquiry or investigation at a post-secondary institution.
‟We feel that it's an important question to ask of anybody. So we learned something out of the Dal situation," said Fefergrad.
‟Just because somebody has had an experience in the dental school, it doesn't automatically dis-entitle that person from registration. What it does is it triggers our obligation to make inquiries as to their suitability to practice and under what circumstances." Fefergrad would not say whether his organization has contacted the university for further information on any applicants.
The Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia also announced policy changes in response to the Dalhousie situation.
‟The Board is moving to strengthen its licensure review process by requiring all applicants to disclose any disciplinary proceedings or complaints made against them during their university education," the organization said in a statement in March.
When asked this week if the board had contacted Dalhousie to find out if any licence applicants were involved in the Facebook group, chairman Tom Raddall said privacy laws prevent the disclosure of details from specific applications.

Ryan Millet, a recent Dalhousie
University dentistry school graduate who blew the whistle on offensive and
hateful posts in a student-run Facebook group, wants the school to clear his
record.
An independent task force
released a report last week for Dalhousie on misogyny, sexism and homophobia in
the faculty of dentistry. The report included 39 recommendations for the
dentistry school and university to tackle systemic sexism, racism,
discrimination and harassment.
“Based on the damning indictment
you have been provided by your own task force, we request you find a way to
expunge Ryan’s suspension and the disciplinary finding of misconduct … on the
grounds of an unauthorized and fundamentally flawed process undertaken by the
faculty of dentistry,” Bruce MacIntosh, Millet’s New Glasgow lawyer, wrote in a
22-page letter to university president Richard Florizone.

“I am confident your lawyers can
work wonders in finding the mechanical ways of putting the genie back in the
bottle, if you have the political will to right the wrongs inflicted on Ryan.”
MacIntosh provided the letter,
dated June 30, to the media Monday.
MacIntosh also asks Florizone to
write a personal and private note of regret and apology to Millet to “start
heal the rift that your administration has allowed to develop between Ryan and
his alma mater.”
In light of the task force report
— which MacIntosh noted lists specific wrongs that were inflicted on Millet —
he asks the president to accept responsibility and write to licensing
authorities, to clear Millet’s professional reputation.
In his letter, MacIntosh also
alleges the university encouraged him to advise Millet to make no mention of
his two-month suspension or finding of “blatant unprofessionalism,” when
applying to licensing authorities.
Thirteen male fourth-year
dentistry students were suspended from clinical practice for two months and
forced to attend class separately from their peers after sexist, misogynist an
homophobic posts in a Facebook group came to light in December.
Twelve of the 13 participated in
Dalhousie’s restorative justice process. Millet, an international student, did
not participate.
Millet has left Nova Scotia and
returned to Utah. He is living at home with his parents. The married father of
three young children is unemployed.
In his letter, MacIntosh said
Millet, who has a student loan debt of $400,000, has been offered a very good
dentistry position but is unable to start work until he receives licensing
approval from the State of Oregon.
“Ryan has disclosed his
predicament to the Oregon Board of Dentistry and the board is presently
conducting it own due diligence investigation,” MacIntosh wrote.
“Ryan does not know how long that
investigation will take or what its outcome will be. He is fearful that
oversight mentoring may be imposed, which will disqualify him for the position
he has been offered.”
The academic standards class
committee decided in March that Millet could return to clinic under several
conditions, including close supervision and education on professionalism. Millet
agreed to the conditions, as a prerequisite to graduation.
MacIntosh could not be reached
Monday night.
Florizone would not grant an
interview Monday night.
Instead, Dalhousie spokesman
Brian Leadbetter emailed a response the university’s Ottawa lawyer, Sally
Gomery, sent to MacIntosh on Monday.
“Given that Mr. MacIntosh appears
to suggest that his client will be pursuing legal action, we do not want to
engage in any further public discussion,” Leadbetter wrote in a statement to
The Chronicle Herald.
In her letter to MacIntosh,
Gomery alleges MacIntosh’s letter contains factual inaccuracies and that he has
mischaracterized observations in the task force report.
“Dalhousie’s president does not
have the power to rewrite history and pretend that Mr. Millet was not involved
in the DDS Gentlemen’s Facebook Group for over three years, or that he was not
suspended, or that he ultimately did not challenge (the committee’s) decision
that a suspension was merited,” Gomery wrote in the letter.
“As communicated to you
previously, Mr. Millet has no disciplinary record at Dalhousie University. His
record reflects that he was found to have engaged in unprofessional conduct and
was required to undergo remediation as a result. That remediation was
successful.”

Mindful of Millet’s enormous

·Our story takes place at top-ranked Dalhousie
University in Canada. A bunch of bad-boy dentistry students, in their 4th and
last year of training, used an invitation-only Facebook page as their online
men’s locker room. Interspersed with aggressively vulgar and misogynistic
posts, the men discussed their women colleagues by name. As in: Which woman
would you most like to have “hate sex” with? (I had to look it up.)
·Last December, one of them outed the page to
one of the targeted female students. Then screen shots went viral. And though
the page was deleted, damage was done. Immediately, the public was out for
blood. A petition demanding the men’s expulsion from the school amassed 42,000
signatures in a week. Some faculty members similarly issued their own petition.
Kick ‘em out; heads should roll; get them out of sight and out of mind. The
media was having a field day, just as it has been with the recent rash of outed
college misbehavior — drug dealing, racism, and rape.
·Colleges knock themselves out to manage their
students’ bad behavior privately. Their rankings and fundraising depend on
maintaining the image of an institution with noble purpose. So, if the scandal
does go public, lay the blame squarely on offenders and dispose of them. They
were the root of the problem. They’re now expelled. Let’s put this behind us.
End of story.
Dalhousie chooses a far
tougher road: Restorative Justice.
All 13 men have been suspended
from fulfilling their clinic hours, which means that they’ll likely not
graduate on time, at a minimum. So far, that is the only apparent consequence –
because all of Dalhousie’s misbehaving students are given a choice. They can
lawyer up, as did the whistleblower, and take their chances in the conventional
court system.
Or, if they accept responsibility
for their actions, they can participate in a Restorative Justice process. Heads
might still roll one day. But first, University facilitators work with
offenders, victims and those most directly affected. They talk with the
individuals and later bring them together as a group to understand what on
earth happened. The group will determine what would set things right, including
what consequences offenders should face.
In this case, 12 of the 13
offenders agreed to the process, as did the victims and classmates not directly
involved. Almost the entire 2015 Dentistry class, 29 students total, opted to
participate. If this sounds warm and fuzzy, imagine discussing such an ugly
rift with people you once considered colleagues, if not friends. The hurt, the
anger, the shame.
The Dalhousie site,
dedicated to updating the public, explains:
The restorative
process… requires those who have caused harm to accept responsibility and be
accountable for the consequences of their actions… When wrongdoing occurs,
justice requires attention to the needs of those who have been harmed… In this
case this includes harm to those directly affected and more broadly to the
public trust.
Restorative Justice (RJ) is not
new to Dalhousie. Certain professors in their law school are passionate RJ
advocates, including Jennifer Llewellyn, whom I’ve heard speak at
international conferences. The Dalhousie RJ process has been tried, honed, and
is now mature enough to weather the media onslaught currently vilifying the
University’s choices.
Two remarkable things are
happening.
First, the University is turning
itself inside out, allowing the issues to be examined in their fullness. On a
dedicated site, the University President regularly updates
the public to the extent confidentiality allows him. He explains that the RJ
evolves in its own time, so no, they do not know when it will be concluded. The
University’s Committee for Academic Standards and professionalism is conducting
an investigation of its own. And a task force has been convened to investigate
“Misogyny, Sexism and Homophobia in the Faculty of Dentistry.”
This is not sweeping matters
under the rug.
Second, all 29 participating
students recently wrote an open letter to the public begging outsiders and the
media to back off and quit trying to interfere with the process or to stop it.
Published unedited, the impressive document concludes:
We believe that
the education and perspective that we are gaining through our participation in
the restorative justice process will allow us to be better healthcare
providers, colleagues, and representatives of Dalhousie University. We ask, as
a group, that our privacy and our right to pursue this restorative process off
the public stage be respected. The constant public attention has been harmful
and even sometimes threatening to us, our families and friends… We hope that
through this process our voices and experiences will make significant
contributions to the important public discussions about sexism, misogyny,
inclusion, and professionalism.
In other words, let the process
teach. Let the public learn from the participants. Bad-boy bad apples are the
symptoms, not the cause. Kicking them out doesn’t help the University or anyone
else get to the depth of cultural dysfunction that is erupting on campuses.
Tom Wolfe’s I Am Charlotte Simmons offers a readable, if
brutal, window into the pervasiveness of sickening cultural norms at high-end
colleges. Restorative justice can dig into those norms in the course of dealing
with the offenders and the people they hurt. Dalhousie is exercising true
accountability. As such, they are good teachers — and importantly, good
learners.

Sexual terrorism is defined as a system by which males frighten, thereby controlling and dominating, females.
A group of male dentistry students from Dalhousie Univeristy had a "Gentlemen's Club" on Facebook where they joked about drugging and raping women, ran polls on who to "hateFscrewK," and targetted several of their female classmates.
The University was told about this "Gentlemen's" club last summer, but did not do anything until the mainstream media ran with the story just before Christmas:
…..There are references to drugging women. Jokes about getting a woman unconscious before sex. How the men’s penises were tools “used to wean and convert lesbians and virgins.” There’s plenty more that hasn’t been reported. Their classmates were mentioned and pictured often. Back in April, one group member jokingly demanded a “written #ign [sic] apology for this sexiest [sic] email” about a female-only bursary program. A lengthy post in March, 2013 defines the group’s philosophy. The post criticizes women in their program who “cry” and those who the author claims flirt with instructors (“Damn honey traps!”).
……..Perhaps most troubling, three male Dalhousie dentistry faculty and staff members are praised by the group for their “gentlemanly” behaviour. One current instructor is lauded for being “under more heat for sexual harassment than anyone since” a previous faculty member. “What a boss.”
….Early in December, one member of the "gentlemen" Facebook group created polls so the group could vote which of their classmates they most wanted to “hate FscrewK,” and which were best for “sport FscrewKing.” They were posted on Saturday, December 6—the 25th anniversary of the Montreal Massacre where 14 female École Polytechnique students were murdered.
According to Dalhousie, they first became aware of the problem on Monday, December 8. Faculty were told a formal code of conduct complaint had been lodged. A week later, university president Richard Florizone told the media Dalhousie hadn’t received any formal complaints yet. [tsk]
In fact, formal complaints are not required for an ethics review, or for investigating breaches of the Code of Conduct. The relevant questions are, "Have the perps broken the University's Student Code of Conduct? Do the perps' behaviours meet Professional Standards?" These questions have not been addressed, except by omission. Dalhousie chose the informal, inappropriate "Restorative Justice Process," which does not allow disciplinary action, and makes the process personal, NOT a matter of ethics or professionalism. So obviously, Dalhousie's good with sexual terrorism.
Instead of taking timely action, Dalhousie gave the perps time to get their ducks in a row. The "Gentlemen's" first priority was identifying the "leaks." And the "Gentlemen" perps were confident throughout that the University would never hold them accountable.
More than 50 pages of Facebook posts read by The Globe provide a clear document of how the group reacted to discovering that someone had blown the whistle. Priority No. 1 was the need to manage the crisis and find out who had leaked the posts to female classmates.
One member of the group wrote: “Red Alert!!! … We have to get rid of the evidence.” Another man proposed “some kind of rapprochement with the girls … drafting a statement on behalf of the Guys Club.” A poll of possible options includes “do nothing” or “issue statement of some sort.”
In December, after students complained to the university, one member of the group tells the others that many faculty are aware of the allegations. “Just a heads up. Sounds very serious. Especially given the climate across the country given this sort of stuff.”
Others are concerned that members of the group showed the posts to female classmates, which meant they could no longer discuss their female colleagues openly. The posts indicate they were more concerned with finding the culprits than how the university might respond. “boys what are they going to do? .... Kick every guy out of 4th year? .... I think the bigger issue is who .. is showing the girls.”
Weeks later, after a huge public hullaballoo, Dalhousie announced on January 5 that the perps had been suspended from clinical activities - but that was a hoax. A cruel joke. Fact is, dental clinics and classes are closed for ALL dentistry students until January 12, at least - not just the perps.
Janet Bryson says she has “no idea” whether the men will be back treating patients next month, but it seems likely. Florizone has already told the media he does not feel the men are a threat to the public.
President Florizone also announced that the female victims agreed to a "restorative justice" process (thus making it personal, not a matter of ethics, public interest or safety) - but fact is, many female victims (most?) did not consent to Dalhousie's "solution," or even hear about it until the Monday, January 5 announcement. "This was the first time that all of the women in our class (including many who are “directly affected”) were asked whether or not we consented to participate in this process, despite what you have been telling the media," students wrote in an open letter.

….We feel that the University is pressuring us into this process, silencing our views, isolating us from our peers, and discouraging us from choosing to proceed formally. This has perpetuated our experience of discrimination.
….If, despite our requests, this matter is not properly investigated or considered formally as a Code of Conduct complaint, Dalhousie will send the message that there is no penalty for harming its female students in this way. You will be telling us that we don’t matter.
Dalhousie President Florizone continues to spout bafflegab about "just process" and protecting students - but he is talking about justice for the perps, and protecting the perps, NOT the victims. When he talked about "student safety" turns out he meant the perps might self-harm. Again, who cares about the victims?
Mumbling something about "privacy rights," Florizone even refused a request from Ontario's Royal College of Dental Surgeons for the perps' names.

On Tuesday, dentistry regulatory bodies in Alberta and B.C. joined Ontario and Nova Scotia in announcing they would take extra steps to ensure that men from the Dalhousie class of 2015 who apply for a licence to practise are of “good character.”
….The Alberta Dental Association and College on Tuesday called on Dalhousie to provide it with the names of the students involved in the group “if and when they graduate.” And the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia said graduates wanting to practise in the province will be required to disclose “any accusations or findings of misconduct while in academia.” A joint statement from all provincial regulators is expected in the coming days.
Dalhousie on Tuesday denied a request from the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario for the names of the male students in the group over privacy concerns.
'Course the victims' "privacy" is not a concern at Dalhousie - Florizone has consistently insisted that the victims must file formal complaints and identify themselves publicly before the University could act. Not true of course, but ethics, Code of Conduct, professionalism and published evidence be damned. This is the Boys Club: sacred, untouchable, invulnerable, inviolate and sacrosanct.
Somehow, Dalhousie has twisted this whole scandal to be about the perps' rights and futures - and to-hell-with the victims' rights and futures. [Insult to injury. More sexual terrorism.]
And the strategy is clear. The perps will graduate. Responsibility to determine their "professionalism" will be off-loaded to individual province's licensing agencies. The scandal will be forgotten by the time the perps are ready to practice. They're good to go, just like they knew they would be. The Boys Club protects its own.
Just to be clear: These perps are not "silly kids." They are men - men who have chosen a career where they are free to drug women and children, and be alone with them unsupervised.
There are 19 men and 19 women in the core fourth-year dentistry class at Dal. Thirteen of those men were members of the Facebook group up until it was shut down last week. Although there are clear references to others jumping ship or being kicked off earlier. At least seven of their female classmates were the subject of derogatory remarks. Nine other students—seven men and two women—who are part of the foreign-trained QP class seemingly weren’t involved at all.
….The university is refusing to release the names of the men involved in the Facebook group, as is the media for the time being. It’s likely there are men in Dalhousie’s fourth year dentistry program who had no part in the hateful Facebook group. Nevertheless, they’re now tarnished with the actions of their classmates. Names shouldn’t have to be made public for justice to be restored. Ideally, it’s the university who holds those responsible accountable.

stand up to violence against women?
Amherst’s second 1 Billion Rising
event is set for Saturday, March 8, beginning at the Cumberland YMCA and
concluding at the Dominion Public Building. The event begins at 1 p.m. and
includes a walk to town hall where there will be several speakers and a
drumming circle.
“One Billion Rising for Justice
is a global call to women survivors of violence and those who love them to
gather safely in outside places where they are entitled to justice including
courthouses, police stations, government offices, school administration
buildings, workplaces and other places where women deserve to feel safe but all
too often do not,” organizing committee member Ruth Currie said. “It is also a
call to survivors to break the silence and release their stories through art,
dance, marches, ritual, song, spoken word, testimonies and whatever way feels
right.”
Organizers are hoping
participants – both men and women – will bring drums and other noisemakers to
make as much noise and commotion as possible as the move from the YMCA to town
hall.
They are also hoping those along
the route will get into the spirit by dancing to the noise made by parade
participants.

Police Department said it’s important for people from all walks of life to come
together so their voices can be heard. He also stressed that violence against
women is not just a women’s issue, but a community one.
“Men need to be allies in making
change,” Wood said. “It’s important for all of us to realize this is a
community issue that needs a community response.”
Currie said people need to think
about why they are rising up and to consider speaking out for those who don’t
have a voice.
Organizers also plan to give One
Billion Rising toques to the first 100 participants. She said Autumn House and
the Amherst Zonta Club have joined together to sponor the hats, while Carter’s
Sports Cresting and CUPE Local 4326 have provided the banner.
