Crosby, MacKinnon, MacDonald ‘nice boys, very well brought up’

Nova Scotia NHLers Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon and Andrew MacDonald stopped by Acadian Fish and Chips on Hammonds Plains Road after a round of golf on Monday. (FILE)
Three Nova Scotia NHL players got the star treatment Monday while having supper at Acadian Fish & Chips on Hammonds Plains Road.
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon and Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Andrew MacDonald dropped by the restaurant on their way back from a round of golf.
Restaurant manager Evelyn LeBlanc offered them a free meal.
“Sidney came to the counter, and I looked at him and said, ‘Are you who I think you are?’” she said.
“He just smiled and grinned at me, then said ‘Maybe.’ So I said, ‘Well, your meal is on the house.’”
LeBlanc said the players do a great job representing Nova Scotia, and that she was happy to feed them for free.
“They told me ‘No, that’s not necessary,’” she said. “But I said, ‘No guys, you represent our province really well. You’re our pride. It’s the least we can do here at Acadian Fish & Chips.’”

According to LeBlanc, nobody else in the restaurant recognized the local celebrities, so she made sure they enjoyed their meal in peace.
“To be honest, nobody recognized them,” she said.
“They went out to the deck to have their supper, and I guaranteed I wouldn’t divulge who they were. They wanted to have their supper in privacy. I can understand that.”
Her only request was a couple of autographs.
“Sidney signed my receipt to thank me for the meal, and he signed my husband’s Olympic photograph,” she said. “They’re nice boys, very well brought up, very respected. It was a pleasure to talk to them.”
Crosby and MacKinnon are from Cole Harbour, and MacDonald is from Cape Breton. In 2013, MacKinnon helped lead the Halifax Mooseheads to both the President’s Cup and Memorial Cup championships.
The players are likely enjoying a well-deserved vacation at home in Nova Scotia before NHL training camps begin in September.

How To Start A Photography Business

How to Start A Photography Business – Make Money With Your Own Camera

Woman-Photographer-with-cameraOne of the easiest ways to making extra money is with a camera. More people own cameras than radios, and photography is the fastest growing hobby in the world. Yet using a camera as an extra income tool is largely overlooked!  If you are going to consider starting a photography business you will definitely want and need to know how to start a photography business and how to make money with your own camera.
With a little imagination, a flair for showmanship or even just a hint of showmanship, the average man or woman, or even teenager, can easily make an extra $300 a week with his camera.
You don’t have to have one of the popular, more expensive cameras either or a lot of high priced attachments and equipment. In many instances, a Polaroid or other “off-the-shelf” camera will suit the purposes perfectly. The only special piece of extra equipment you may want to invest in would be a tripod for mounting the camera in certain situations.

Getting Started

Childrens-Clothing-StoreOne of the easiest ideas is to visit a children’s clothing store in one of the busy shopping centers or the children’s department in one of the large department stores. Sell the manager or store owner on the idea of your setting up in a corner of the store or department, and taking pictures of the shoppers’ children. He can promote the fact that you’ll be in the store taking pictures for a special prices during certain hours—perhaps on Friday evenings and all day Saturdays—in his advertising, thus drawing more patrons into his store because of you.

Things You Will Need

Advertisment-PosterYou’ll need a sheet or plain piece of material, or some sort of imaginative set for a background. But this can be easily made or build one yourself. You should also have an eye-catching poster that calls attention to what you’re doing and the prices you’re charging. Unless you’re a commercial artist, spend the money to have this sign made for you by a professional. The next and last thing you’ll need will be a two-part receipt or coupon. This can be a simple piece of paper about 2 inches wide by 5 inches long. On the left side draw lines for your customers to fill in their name, telephone number and address. You might also want to include space for additional information such as the child’s name and age and number of children in the family, for future efforts, but keep it brief and simple.
On the right side of this coupon, have your business name, address and telephone number, plus a quick outline of the different kinds of photography work you handle, and perhaps a business slogan such as “Satisfaction Guaranteed or You Don’t Pay.”

Always Look Professional

Professsional-PrintingTo add a little bit of class to this coupon, take the basic outline of this idea over to an instant print shop. Tell them what you want; show them your outline; and have them typeset everything. Then put a fancy border around the whole coupon and have it printed on colored paper. The best color is a “dollar bill” shade of green. If you want to give it even more class, you could have it printed on green, lightweight card stock. You’ll want to divide the “information” side of this coupon from the “business card” side with a dotted line and perforations.
If you layout this coupon properly, you should be able to get six of them on an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper or card stock. This means the printer can print and cut 6,000 of them for about the same cost as printing circulars or flyers.
Regarding  your printing, shop around for the best deal, but in the end, it shouldn’t cost more than $60 for all 6,000 coupons which will come to those 1,000 sheets of paper or card stock.

Marketing and Sales

Sales-and-MarketingNow, when you take a person’s picture, regardless of whether it’s an “in-store” set-up out on the golf course or along the street, you give your customer one of your coupon-receipts and tell them their prints will be ready in a couple of days. They fill in the information part of the coupon and give it back to you, retaining your “business card” portion of it.
When the prints are ready, you can phone the customer and remind him–volunteer to deliver and collect; send them through the mail with a bill; or make arrangements with a store to take care of them until the people call for them and pay at that time.
Most stores, golf courses, bowling centers, and other retail merchants will be glad to handle this part of it for you, because it brings the customers back into the places of business, and provides another sales opportunity for them.

Make Sure to Utilize Advertising Circulars

Photographer-Advertising-CircularBy all means, be sure to include an advertising circular with each set of pictures you deliver. This circular should explain how the customer can get more prints, how they can get enlargements of their favorites, and details relating to all the other photography services you offer.
Back to the original “in-store” picture taking. Set-up during evening shopping hours and on weekends for extra income. You can call attention to your “in-store” set-up, and bring in more business with a few merchandising promotional ideas. In the following paragraphs, we give the highlights of a few ideas that  observe additional promotional ideas that could be adapted to fit your new business.
Dress a helper in a clown suit, and take pictures of the kids in his lap or with his arm around the kids. Put a sandwich advertising board on a helper and let him stroll through the shopping center advertising the fact that you’re in a Kiddies Clothing store taking pictures.
Baby-of-the-Year-PromotionPromote a “Baby of The Year” contest where you can take pictures of the babies, display the pictures on a “show board” and offer $100 cash plus a merchandise prize in a big drawing at the end of the year.
Set up a booth in the mall and promote “Instant Snapshots.” Be a Roving Photographer and take candid shots of shoppers and promote a “Shopper Of The Year” contest. Work with a clown and have him “attach himself” to the kids, and ask if they’d like to have their pictures taken with him. Build and inexpensive and portable set, such as an airplane, a race car, bucking bronco, hand-shaking scene with a famous person or “balloon figures” and take pictures of the people standing in or on these sets.
Get out to the golf course and take pictures of the golfers teeing off. Get over to the bowling centers and take candid shots of the bowlers in action. Do the same thing wherever there’s a sports event taking place. Be on the spot and ready whenever there’s an opportunity to take team pictures.
Little-League-Baseball-Team-PhotoYou might follow, or hire someone else to follow a Little League team through its season, taking candid and action shots. You then arrange the best pictures in a photo album with the team’s name and year on the front. You should be able to sell one of these albums to each member of the team.
There’s also the idea of “just” strolling through the park” on a Sunday afternoon. You can take candid and interesting pictures of couples, children and people in general spending time with their relatives.

Always Be on the Lookout for New Marketing Ideas

Keep tabs on the announcements of new births. Send advertising literature to the new mothers, and follow up with a phone call efforts to set up photography sessions. Also keep tabs on the engagement notices in the weekend papers. Send your sales literature to the brides-to-be, and follow up with phone call efforts to take the wedding pictures.

Additional Marketing Concept – A Real Winner!

Personal-property-photoSet up a household and business photo inventory service. With this idea, you contact insurance companies and determine if they will approve and endorse photographs you take of their policy holders’ household, personal, and business property in loss claims.
Most will, and from there–working either with the help of an insurance agent, the agency itself, or on your own–contact owners of property and sell them on the idea of you taking pictures of the household goods they have insured. You take the pictures–a pictorial inventory of everything they’re claiming or would like to claim on an insurance policy–and then identify the pictures, giving one set to the property owner and the other set to his insurance agent or company.
Picture inventories of household and personal property is still a new thing, but everywhere it’s been introduced, it’s definitely proven to be a super money- maker for people willing to get out and hustle.

Expand Your Horizons

Franchising-Your-BusinessIf this idea arouses your interest, you might want to check into a going franchise operation that gives you a complete business manual, operations guidebook, and ongoing consultant services: Photographic Inventory, PO Box 4046, Morgantown, WV 26505.

A Final Note

Smiley-Face-with-cameraOnce you decide that using your camera to generate extra income is what you’re going to do, get out and use your camera, start taking pictures, and allow yourself the opportunity to build. Give yourself the chance, and you’ll quickly begin to think of hundreds of ideas for taking pictures, merchandising ideas for promoting your services, and sales angles for increasing your profits.
The important thing is to get started, regardless of how small your start, and begin cashing in on an idea that’s still in its infancy. This is an idea that can produce new concepts for profit every day of the week. An idea that can be fun, as well as financially rewarding for you!
You’ve got the idea and the plan–the rest is up to you. You’ve got the ball; now run with it!

READER’S CORNER: Expand distance education
ROBERT FOUGÈRE
Published July 14, 2015 - 5:12pm
I read with interest Grant Frost’s July 11 commentary with respect to keeping education local. I concur totally with his comments and stance on the present education system and the opportunities that exist, if and when we decide to become innovative and show leadership on a larger scale.
The purpose of this submission, however, is to make readers aware that we have a university institution within the boundaries of Richmond County that was not mentioned in the said piece. L’Université Sainte-Anne has a satellite campus in Petit-de-Grat and it has been there for years. It began as a satellite campus of Collège de l’Acadie (beginning in 1992), offering college-level courses in five different areas of the province using distance education with video linking. It has since become part of Université Sainte-Anne, offering both university and college-level courses in French, in our immediate area.
The initial Collège de l’Acadie did much and was instrumental in retraining people displaced by the downturn in the fisheries in the early 1990s. Many people are now employed in the area because of this endeavour to offer training and education in a different manner and in a different and local setting. We now have the possibility of doing teacher training in the area, using the same approach of distance education through a satellite campus. And much more still. A welding program was offered in the past and is set to resume shortly.
In closing, and to revert back to Mr. Frost’s commentary, I would have to say that there is a limit to how far children will or should be bused. The time is now with respect to doing something to set up hub- or community-centred schools for the benefit of the young and the not so young.
Robert Fougère of Petit-deGrat is a retired school teacher and administrator, and the first director of Collège de l’Acadie, Petit-de-Grat campus

Extending Telecommunications beyond the Market
Toward universal service in competitive environments
Björn Wellenius -Note No. 206-March 2000
The World Bank Group

Finance, Private Sector, and Infrastructure Network
Competitive markets go a long way toward making telecommunications services available throughout the population. But governments often seek to extend access to services beyond what the private sector will provide on its own. Cost-effective measures to achieve widespread access focus on removing obstacles that prevent the market from working well, letting users decide whatthey need and can afford, and using market mechanisms to allocate responsibility for extending service beyond the market and to quantify and allocate any necessary funding. As they adopt such
measures, governments must make some decisions:

Which services to extend?

 To what population groups?
 At what cost?
Who should provide the additional service?
Who should pay?
The answers vary widely among countries and over time. This Note outlines options and best practices, emphasizing those relevant to emerging economies

COUNTERPOINT: Downloading movies not an essential service

SUZANNE TOWNSEND
July 14, 2015 - 4:15pm

“I don’t know any business in Cape Breton that ‘struggles with the poor level of Internet’ unless the business is all about sending and receiving streaming video,” writes Suzanne Townsend. “A cap will be the death knell to downloading movies, and that is about it.” (THE ASSOCIATED PRESS)
Re: the July 13 Reader’s Corner, “EastLink will kill rural N.S,” by Gary Ewer of Port Royal. I’d like to weigh in with a slightly different outlook.
I have been a full-time telecommuting employee for over a decade. In the course of a day, I use Webex and Skype, send and receive videos, PowerPoints, and other media via email or FTP, give remote control of my desktop to IT technicians, use Cloud-based and in-house databases and programs (TestTrack, Sharepoint, etc.) via VPN, and so forth.
When I lived in the Halifax area, I used EastLink cable. When I heard high-speed Internet was available in Cape Breton, I moved there and took my job with me.
At first I used Telus, because Seaside was not yet available where I had moved to, and I thought that Xplorenet (used by the C@P centres) would be too slow. I was quite worried that even Telus would not be robust or stable enough to handle my work needs, but I took the chance.
Much to my surprise, the reduction in speed from cable to satellite had very little effect on performance; at the worst, occasionally Skype would skip words or disconnect. However, I learned to use video with great caution, because Telus was pay-per-use.
Then Seaside became available here, unlimited, at a set monthly rate. So I switched, again downgrading from the speed I had been using. And again, there was almost no difference. The great difference was that I no longer had to worry about how much I was downloading or uploading.
Therefore, this outcry about how EastLink’s “shocking act” of charging pay-per-use for rural customers has me bemused. I don’t know any business in Cape Breton that “struggles with the poor level of Internet” unless the business is all about sending and receiving streaming video. A cap will be the “death knell” to downloading movies, and that is about it.
Unfortunately, downloading movies does seem to be “the way all Canadian citizens expect to use the Internet in 2015.” They do not consider it useful for finding and exporting work via telecommuting, or other technical purposes. They consider it essential for entertainment, gaming, and social purposes.
But this is a privilege and not a right, and methinks thou protesteth too much. Maybe it would make sense, after all, to ask such people to pay for their use.
Having to pay per use of high-speed Internet is not about “our own survival,” as Mr. Ewer put it. Indeed, as Mr. Ewer said, the Broadband for Rural Nova Scotia Initiative was to provide high-speed Internet access to all Nova Scotians.
But it was not for entertainment. It was so that “more Canadians will be able to connect with their teachers, doctors and families across the country as well as realize economic opportunities” (according to www.novascotiahighspeedinternet.com)
And it did! It allowed me to move here and export my services to buy a home and spend thousands of dollars in local services. It is a huge part of the answer to infrastructure costs, bad weather, gas prices, pollution, aged workers, rural economy, rural population and more.
Business owners, associations, universities, the government and anyone working with the Ivany report should all be banding together to make telecommuting the new way of doing business as usual in the rural community.
A recent survey from ConnectSolutions shows data that support a remote workforce. From a company standpoint, it looks good: 52 per cent of remote employees are less likely to take time off, and 23 per cent are willing to work longer hours from home.
For employees, it also looks good: about a third are saving more than $5,000 per year on expenses associated with traditional working and the same amount are reporting exercising more. Nearly half are eating and sleeping better (Source: http://linkis.com/socialmediatoday.com/YMtAG). And it doesn’t take the latest and greatest high speed to do it.
Those who really just want entertainment are free to pay for the privilege of higher speed, and they can carp and groan to EastLink about getting it. But let’s not mix it up with essential services owed to them by the government.
Suzanne Townsend lives in Glendale, Cape Breton

BUSINESS IDEAS TARGETING SENIORS AND THE OLDER POPULATION

In 2011, the oldest members of the Baby Boom generation celebrated their 65th birthday. In the next few years, the first wave of post-war baby boomers – those born between 1946 and 1964 – will begin to retire and we will see a significant increase in the number of seniors and older people.
home care giver and elderly lady
In the next few years, the number of elderly and the rate of aging are expected to increase steeply. According to projections Pew Research Center, about 18% of the United States population will be 65 and over in 2030.  How can you, as a small business entrepreneur, take advantage of this fast-growing market segment?
The graying of the population will change the business landscape. As people age, they will have different consumption and saving patterns at different stages in heir lives. The needs of older people are very different from the needs of middle aged and younger people: older people buy different things than younger people and have less need for borrowing money. We are already seeing massive shifts in business investment, much of which is responding to the changing tastes of an aging population. We will see a gradual substitution away from such purchases as new family homes and automobiles to greater spending on rent and services. While consumption of durables is expected to rise, it will be increasingly dominated by household equipment and furniture purchases.
The baby boomers possess different characteristics from any preceding groups of that age:
  • They are richer, have more savings and possess greater disposable income than their parents
  • They are healthier, more active and fitness-oriented
  • They want to remain independent, and a vast majority of seniors now want to stay in their own homes rather live in nursing homes
  • Older people want to continue working beyond their retirement years.
  • Here are some suggested business ideas focusing on the older population.

Adult Day Care

Adult day service programs (formerly know as adult day care centers) are achieving new popularity as more and more seniors chose not to live in nursing homes. The advent of home and community long term care Medicare and Medicaid waiver programs that support alternatives to institutional long-term care and rehabilitation also contributed to its growing popularity. This is a relatively recent service for frail, physically or cognitively impaired, seniors and their caregivers. Stand-alone facilities offering day care are cropping up in urban and suburban areas.

Demand for this kind of service is growing largely due to the benefits it provides to caregivers, particularly the children. With their elderly parents in an adult day care center, the caregivers can retain a job outside of their home, have help with the physical part of caring for a loved one, avoid the guilt of putting a parent in a “home” and obtain respite from what can be a 24 hour responsibility
You could run this type of business if you are qualified to do so. Your goal will be to provide for the physical, emotional, social and mental needs of elderly during the day and return them to their family’s home toward late afternoon. To improve customer response, you can offer include round trip transportation and pick-up services, as well as facilities for bathing and hair washing. The professional qualifications of your staff is also important, and the presence of a registered nurse may be required by law particularly in areas of licensing for administering medicine and medical procedures. You also need to schedule activities, trips, arts, crafts and other disguised therapy, nutritional meals prepared on site or by a qualified outside source.

Senior Citizens Internet Center

One possibility is through the Internet. The number of senior citizens with Internet access can also be expected to grow rapidly. The baby boomers, particularly the retired ones, have lots of time on their hands. They also have a strong need to communicate with their families, who oftentimes live far from them.
Many of them, however, especially those who are not computer literate (vast majority), feel overwhelmed by the seemingly complex online world. As their mobility becomes more restricted, the convenience offered by online shopping will be a great attraction to the world of e-commerce. In fact, a study conducted by SeniorNet.org entitled “The Reality of Internet Use by Individuals Age 50 and Over” showed that respondents 50 years and above in the United States spent 16.2 hours on average on the Internet, and 75 percent of the respondents have shopped online.
Using the premise that the older generation is not averse to new technology but rather is just unfamiliar with it, you can create a site targeting the baby boomer generation. This site can take the form of a Senior Citizens Internet Center, where you provide basic Internet information and terminology, extensive set of links, troubleshooting lists, consultation through chat programs, virtual store for special devices and items for senior citizens.
You can develop a content-rich site focusing on concerns such as health, fraud and scam information, investing information, among others. Start-up costs of this kind of venture may be from $5,000 to $25,000 (depending on the cost of creating the web site), but you can generate revenues from advertising and sale of goods. Tie-up with merchandisers focusing on this demographic group and get commission from every sales of goods – from flowers, long-distance calls, medical products, computer software, and many more.

Fitness Organization Promoting Healthy Aging

Health clubs, fitness organizations and even the Senior Olympics are presently seeing a surge in numbers of members over 50 years old. The whole concept of aging is changing: seniors are now actively taking part in sports and fitness activities to keep them physically fit – and mentally younger. Definitely, seniors now refuse to be curtailed. Even the AARP website offers a guide to adventure vacations from sea kayaking in Belize to white water rafting in Upper Yangtze, and climbing in Ecuador.
There are several ways to tap this growing number of health-conscious seniors. You can start your own Senior Fitness Club offering health and fitness program to the older adult exerciser. You can transform a big room in your house, or rent a large room to serve as the workout area of your older clients. If you are presently operating a health club, you can add a fitness program geared specifically for the seniors.
You can also opt to do away with the gym. Instead, you can serve as an exercise leader working with frail and disabled elderly clients in nursing homes, congregate living facilities and adult day care centers. You need to learn how to conduct the most productive and enjoyable functional and restorative fitness activities for the very old and physically restricted populations. This business entails you to provide safe and effective group fitness classes in settings requiring gentle seated, adaptive physical activity for elderly and disabled participants.
For the more adventurous seniors, you can establish a club offering tours on extreme sports. Experts even say that the focus on strenuous sports will increase as baby boomers near retirement, as more and more seniors are replacing their golf clubs for sports such as surfing, heli-skiing and triathlons. Your target market for this kind of business includes high-income individuals such as managers, executives and owners of companies who are also highly athletic.

How To Set Up Your Own Online Store

How To Set Up Your Own Online Store
With free tools and cheap web hosting, there's really no reason you can't have your own catalog and shopping cart on the web if you've got something worth selling. Whether you're looking for a side project or a real source of income, here's a starting-from-scratch guide to setting up shop on the web.

Why Host Your Own Online Store?

There are plenty of places you can easily sell stuff online, Amazon and eBay included. We've previously looked at the most popular places to set up shop online, covering sites like Shopify and Etsy. Still, the winner of that Hive Five was a self-hosted storefront, and for good reason.

Hosting your own e-commerce site gives you more control over the shop and its presentation, is better for business branding, makes moving to another web host easier, and can be more cost-effective. You can, for example, avoid transaction and listing fees, but you'll still have to pay processing fees from your payment gateway (more on that in a bit). The downside is that it's more hands-on, and you'll need to regularly update the shopping cart scripts whenever an update is available to avoid security vulnerabilities. But if you're serious about what you're selling, that should hardly deter you.

Step 1. Gather What You'll Need

This guide assumes you have the business part of the online store already figured out—a company name, the products or services (or both) you want to market, and pricing for those items. If you don't have those aspects pinned down yet, check out some essential tools for starting up your business and how to roll your own business before you get started building your online shop.

You'll also need:
  • A domain name (less than $10/year). We've previously mentioned one or two tools to help you find a good domain name, as well as the five most popular domain name registrars where you can lock down that domain name.
  • A web host (about $72/year). If you haven't found one yet, check out some web hosting companies recommended by Lifehacker readers. (I've used both Bluehost and HostGator over the last couple of years and recommend them to my occasional web development clients.)
Look for a web host that offers "cPanel" with Fantastico scripts or, if you prefer a Windows-based server, Ensim Power Tools. These features make installing third-party scripts, like shopping cart systems, a one-click affair.
  • A dedicated IP address (about $2/month) for your website and private SSL certificate ($50/year). SSL is the Secure Sockets Layer protocol that encrypts the data between the browser and the website server; it's essential for protecting customer data. Many web hosts offer free shared SSL certificates, but these generate warnings in the browser that the SSL certificate doesn't match the domain name. If you want your web customers to trust you, you'll need a private SSL certificate, and that also requires a dedicated IP for your website.

HostGator, Bluehost, and other web hosts sell private SSL certificates (usually the Comodo Positive SSL Certificate) for about $50/year and will either install it for free for you or provide instructions for generating one from your website control panel. You can also shop around for an SSL certificate from domain name registrars for better pricing; Namecheap, for example, offers the Comodo EssentialSSL Certificate for $25/year.
  • A shopping cart script (free). Free shopping cart scripts like osCommerce and Zen Cart are the critical backbones of many online stores. Most web hosts will offer the open source osCommerce script as a quick install, but there are a great many others you can compare on Wikipedia and use instead if you're comfortable installing a script manually on your website (this mainly involves editing configuration files with a text editor and uploading the files to your web server). For our online store example, we'll be using osCommerce because it's most widely accessible.
  • A payment gateway (varies). Unless you want people to mail you checks (and, if you do, it'd be wise to get a P.O. Box or virtual business address), you'll need an online payment processor so you can accept credit cards. Payment gateways validate the credit card information and process the transactions in real time, taking a cut of the transaction and then depositing the rest into your bank account. (You can get a credit card merchant account to process credit cards on your own, but payment gateways have the forms and everything already set up and are just easier to implement.)

PayPal, which accepts all major credit cards, is an obvious and easy solution that integrates with most major shopping carts. There are no setup charges or monthly fees, and getting started is very quick. PayPal takes from 2.2% to 2.9% of each transaction, depending on your monthly sales volumes.

Not everyone is comfortable using PayPal, however, so having another payment gateway would be beneficial. Authorize.net is one of the most popular gateways. It has a set up fee of around $100, a monthly fee of $20, and transaction fees of about $0.10 (prices vary because you need to sign up with an Authorize.net reseller to use them.
2Checkout is another gateway that can get you up and running very quickly, and you can accept international currencies. It costs $49 to set up and takes a 5.5% commission plus $0.45 for each sale.

Finally, if you sell software or digital products like ebooks, share-it! by Digital River can take care of the billing and delivery for you. Pricing is 4.9% of the product plus $1.

Take some time to research your payment gateway choice, based on how much sales volume you expect and your transaction needs (Freshbooks has an overview of different payment gateways and GoalsOnTrack has a price comparison chart for some of them.)

Step 2. Set Up Your Website

Once you have your domain name registered and pointing to your web host, you can set up your site's homepage and other static pages (e.g., information about you or background on your products) the way you would normally make a website (see our complete beginner's guide to making a website for help doing so).

However, the shopping cart script can stand alone as your entire website if you prefer. Besides the cart and product pages, the script can create static pages with company background, FAQs about shipping, and the like.

Step 3. Install Your Shopping Cart System

How To Set Up Your Own Online Store
If you have Fantastico or QuickInstall in your website cPanel (or Ensim Power Tools if you have a Windows host), you can auto-install the shopping cart system using those tools (look under Software/Services or a similarly named section in your cPanel). For this demonstration, we're installing osCommerce, but the steps are similar for other e-commerce tools.
Click on the "New installation" button or link to create a new installation. You'll then be able to set fundamental shop features (e.g., the name and email address of the store owner and the SSL option). In osCommerce you also set the administrator username and password here, but some systems like Zen Cart instead email you a generated password.
This "New installation" section is also where you set the installation folder. If you want the store to be in the root directory of your domain—i.e., when visitors go to yoursite.com they'll immediately enter the shop—leave the folder blank. Otherwise, choose a directory name like "shop" or "catalog" for the installation; this way you can have customized web pages around your store (see Step 2 above) and link to your shop from there.
The script will set up the store database in MySQL for you and provide you with a link to both your base shop and the administration area.

Step 4. Customize Your Online Shop

How To Set Up Your Own Online Store
osCommerce and other shopping systems are pretty feature-rich. You can keep track of products in stock, add different tax classes and rates, view advanced reports, and much more. There are also lots of add-on modules and skins available (see osCommerce's add-ons directory, for example) for really customizing your web shop.

Changing the logo and footer

The first thing you'll probably want to do is change the logo and remove the osCommerce footer graphic. In the admin panel, go to Configuration > Store Logo to save a new store logo.
To adjust the footer, you'll need to edit the english.php file under the [your shop directory]/includes/languages/ folder. (Either download the file, edit with a text editor, and then upload it back to your web server via FTP, or open the file directly from your web host using the built-in cPanel file manager.) The footer text is defined on the second-to-last line of the language file. Remove this part:

Powered by osCommerce
To remove the banner graphic, go to Tools > Banner Manager in the admin panel and delete the osCommerce banner.
Note, if you think you'll want to apply a different template or theme to your store, consider installing it before doing any further customizations (see Step 7).

Further basic configurations

There are many other things to configure in the administration panel. Go to Configuration > My Store to set things like which zone your country is in and whether you want to direct customers to their cart after they add a product, etc.
In the includes/languages folder you'll also find the files to edit for customizing the information pages of your site, such as your shipping and privacy policies (shipping.php and privacy.php, respectively). As above, use your text editor to customize the copy on those pages.

Step 5. Set Up Your Categories/Products

How To Set Up Your Own Online Store
The main section you'll be working in is the Catalog, where the categories and products are listed. osCommerce sets up an electronics shop for you by default, but if you're selling clothes or something else you'll need to customize the categories (and definitely products).
If you only have a few wares to peddle, using the online admin interface to add categories and products is pretty straightforward. Just select a category/product image and enter in the other details needed (description, name, etc.).
How To Set Up Your Own Online Store
If you have a lot of products, turn to add-ons that allow for importing products from an Excel spreadsheet, CSV file, or other delimited text file, bypassing the web interface altogether. You'll need to download the add-on (e.g., Easy Populate & Products Attributes, which works with a bunch of shopping cart systems) and follow its directions to install it to your store directory.
Note: for the Easy Populate add-on, the given instructions for editing the catalog.php file were not accurate for me, perhaps because my osCommerce install was a different version than the Easy Populate one. If your catalog.php file defines its boxes as arrays, just copy and paste one of the arrays (everything from "array(" to the closing ")," and edit it with the Easy Populate information. E.g.,:
array(
'code' => 'Easy Populate',
'title' => 'Easy Populate',
'link' => tep_href_link('easypopulate.php')
),
How To Set Up Your Own Online Store
Once you've installed the add-on, you can download a model csv file that you can edit with your products/services. The unique key for each product is in the v_products_model column, and you can specify product image locations in the v_products_image column.
Once done creating your products/services csv file, go back to the admin panel and import it — after first backing up your store database from the "quick backup" button in Easy Populate or from the admin panel's Tools > Database Backup Manager section.

Step 6. Handle Fulfilment and Shipping

Now that you've got your products all imported, it's time to set up your fulfillment section. Shipping costs and payment methods are both found under the Modules section of the administration panel.
For the payment options, you can install modules for different payment gateways (see Step 1 above), including PayPal, 2Checkout, and others (you can download additional modules like Checkout by Amazon from the add-ons directory). When your customer checks out from your store, they'll be directed to the secure payment sites of one of these gateways.
For shipping you can specify per item shipping costs, rates for different zones, a table rate based on total rate, and so on.
You'll get an email about each new order that arrives, so you can handle shipping out the items as they come in. There are solutions for larger-scale merchandising, but for most sideline gigs and mom-and-pop online stores, email should suffice.

Step 7. Add Other Shopping Cart Modules and Customization

Once you have those basics down, you can go to town customizing your shop with built-in modules (like adding discounts and specials) or modules from the community add-ons for tweaks like adding subcategories, a FAQ desk, random products boxes, and more. Installing the third-party add-ons usually only involves editing a few lines of the configuration files and then uploading them to the shop folder, but it's always a good idea to back up your shop before doing so, as these are install-at-your-own-risk options.
To modify how the osCommerce site looks, edit the stylesheet.css file in your main folder (here's some basic CSS info to get you started); you'll be able to change the color of your box headers and more in that CSS file. You can also replace the default gif images in the images/infobox folder.
The other files you should check for configuring the look of your shop are the header.php, footer.php, left_column.php, and right_column.php files found in the includes folder. See the osCommerce documentation for further details and this forum thread for tips and tricks.

How To Set Up Your Own Online Store
Otherwise, you can download new free templates and themes for your store or buy one from someplace like Template Monster, but be aware that changing the theme may (or may not) override any customizations you did before. Hiring a professional designer to help you with your online store is also a good idea if you have a lot vested in it.

Step 8. Maintenance

Finally, check your shop reports regularly to monitor how it's doing. Also subscribe to your shopping cart system's news feeds to make sure you have the latest patches (e.g., see osCommerce's news site).
And, most of all, enjoy your new web storefront. May it bring you happiness and wealth. Top photo by Pete

The Serenity Prayer- am a friend of bill w. Peace of Christ and love brothers and Sisters, cause that's how I roll.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next.  Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Visual Merchandising Associate Job Description, Retail Job Profile

Visual Merchandising Display, Inventory, Management, Training Responsibilities

Visual Merchandising Job Description Overview:
Visual merchandising team members contribute to the advertising, marketing, and sales efforts of a retail location by designing, developing and taking charge of the visual look of the store and its merchandise. As a member of the in-store merchandising team, you will be executing merchandising strategies by creating and maintaining visual displays in the store windows and on the sales floor.

You will also contribute to the profitability of the store with your merchandise handling, replenishment, and inventory control efforts.
Key Responsibilities of a Visual Merchandiser:
The scope of your duties and responsibilities will vary depending on the size of the retail operation and the level of the visual merchandising position you hold. In general, your key responsibilities as a visual merchandising associate will include visual display, inventory management, and merchandising training.

How a Visual Merchandiser is different than a Sales Merchandiser >>
Visual Display Responsibilities:
You may be designing visual displays yourself, or executing the design decisions of another. In either case, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining a compelling presentation of merchandise that will engage customers and help stimulate sales activity. You will be the store's brand gatekeeper, ensuring that the image and style of the company is projected at all times. As you execute visual presentation changes, you will be moving merchandise, shelving, and fixtures.

You will also be changing signs, and maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of fixtures, signage, lights, and equipment.
Inventory Management Responsibilities:
Because merchandise flow and product placement will be your primary responsibility, your proactive participation in inventory management functions will be vital to the success of the overall merchandising effort. In the course of completing your visual merchandising tasks you will also stock merchandise, take inventory, facilitate stock transfers, ticket and reticket, execute markdowns, and maintain awareness of potential loss prevention issues and activities. You may also participate in the shipping and receiving process and ensure that merchandise is customer ready before it is placed on the sales floor.
Merchandising Training Responsibilities:
As the chief point of contact for new merchandising initiatives, you will generally be responsible for communicating key information that is vital to the success of the initiative. You will help to train the store team about design concepts, visual display standards, and the proper maintenance of the overall visual display effort. By providing on-the-job training, feedback, and recognition, you will motivate other members of the store team to actively support your visual merchandising efforts.
Prior Visual Merchandising Experience Needed:
Most retail operations will require you to have either retail experience or visual merchandising formal training for this for this position, and most will want to see your portfolio. Some larger retail organizations will probably require both education and experience.
If you have acquired on-the-job training or expertise, you may be able to obtain an entry level visual merchandising job by demonstrating a thorough understanding of marketing principles and retail merchandising fundamentals. Supervisory experience may be necessary for a visual merchandising position in a large store.
Qualifications for Visual Merchandisers:
In smaller retail operations, you will likely be the one-person visual merchandising department and, therefore, you will need to be self-reliant, self-motivated, and have an ability to achieve goals and meet deadlines without supervision. In larger stores you may be executing the merchandising strategies of others, so the ability to follow both written and verbal instruction with great attention to detail is essential. You will also be expected to have effective communication skills, and demonstrate the highest level of professionalism and be a role model for outstanding customer service at all times.
Skill Requirements for a Visual Merchandising Job:
Visual merchandisers are expected to have excellent organizational skills, as well as planning, project management, and time management expertise. You will be need to possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a strong creative flair and effective problem solving abilities. Stores will be willing to train you with their specific systems and software, but they will want you bring a basic knowledge of computer functions with you into the position. A working knowledge of Microsoft Office will probably be required as well.
Physical Requirements for Visual Merchandisers:
Because you will be responsible for creating and changing visual displays, you will need to be able to push, lift, and carry 30-50 pounds of merchandise and fixtures. The visual merchandiser position is physically demanding, and you can expect to be on your feet and walking for eight or more hours per day.
Additional Requirements:
Visual display work often occurs at times when it is the least disruptive to the sales floor and the customer experience. So visual merchandising employees should be prepared to work early morning and late night hours, as well as weekends and holidays.
Education Requirements to Get a Visual Merchandising Job:
Most retailers will want you to have a high school diploma before you will be given full-time responsibility for visual merchandising. Entry level visual merchandising positions may not require additional education, but advancement will probably require additional formal education in visual merchandising, marketing, or both.
Compensation:
Visual merchandising jobs are generally full-time positions which are compensated with a salary between $34,00 and $54,000 per year. The size and geographic location of the retail operation accounts for the wide salary range. The level at which you are hired and your experience and credentials will influence your compensation as well. Those working as visual merchandisers will receive the same benefits as any other store employee. Benefit packages generally include health insurance and generous discounts on store merchandise.
